Game Week: @Army
After another heartbreaking loss, next up: @Army.

Another noon game on CBS Sports Network.

Army is a solid 4 - 2 with one loss, no shame, coming to OSU. They will try to run the ball against a team (that's us) with a really good defense, front four.

P.S. I'll make a safe prediction: This game will NOT rival the WMU/UB game which went into 7 OTs and each team went for over 600 yards. They set FBS scoring records with a total of 139. BTW, the WMU MBB team failed to score 71 points 12 times last year.

RE: Game Week: @Army
BTW, I don't want to make this week's game a 'must win' game, but it is close.

IF we beat Army, we have a decent change to win at least 3 other games (e.g., BSU, CMU, BG, Miami) an become bowl eligible.

After watching this defense for 5 weeks I have new expectations for this team. I expect 8 wins. Never in my fandom have I been able to have an expectation like that, however a team with a top 25 defense(21st by one publication) need to win at least 8 games. End of story, done with moral victories, make it happen boys.

Army's triple option has always been difficult for EMU to defend so I am interested in seeing how this defense does in stopping it and forcing them to pass.

I agree.

We've always struggled defensively, and yes, Army would eat us alive.

However, Army has not seen an EMU defense as good as we've had the last two years, and, of course, especially this year.

Maybe E'Tough can help us, but when Army wants to go wide, I believe we have the DEs who can go to the sidelines against them. Ditto when they go up the middle, they'll have trouble with our DTs.

In many respects, this game is a CLASSIC match-up of a very good running attack and a very good run defense.

BTW, I'm 99.9999% sure we won't see something like this at Army Saturday. Lol.

(and hope we don't see it at The Factory the week after... ;-)

Yes our defense is better, but I think you're forgetting our offense is worse (by about 30-40%, if I had to assign it a number), and our special teams/punting is way, way worse (by at least 50%)...........so that's a real stretch to expect more wins this season than last season. In the last 2 weeks alone, we had the laughable punt block, and at least 3 other shanked less than 20 yards that forced our D to START DEFENDING within OUR OWN 20 yard line!!!!!!!!! Just ridiculous. The fact that the staff didn't see this coming may be their biggest blunder of the offseason.

Love the enthusiasm, but not sure the expectation jives with reality.

I just checked Army stats. They've only attempted 33 passes on the season. Completing 8. Their rushing stats are huge of course.

The key to victory is simple. Keep their running game in check and try to get a lead on them. Force them to play from behind.

Is it too much to ask for 100 yards rushing for EMU?

If EMU wants to go to a bowl game these are the games they have to win.

I have full confidence in Neathery to come up with the right scheme, and our players to have enough discipline, to play very well against this difficult offense to defend.

Let's just say they will have had more than just this week to prepare. The D has had this one circled since this summer.

Yes it's probably too much to ask for 100 yds rushing, since we haven't done it this year, and usually we're not even close.

Against a poor Toledo defense our O finished with 73 yards on 23 carries, for a whopping 3.2 average. Only 326 total yards, and a stellar 1-11 on 3rd down again. Oh, and toss in 2 turnovers again.

I feel ya, but the D is giving up less than 20 points a game, no reason even our offense shouldn’t be able to beat that. Especially with some far lesser opponents coming up.

RE: Game Week: @Army
BTW, when I watch EMU on Saturday and Detroit Lions on Sunday, I kind of think I'm watching similar teams.

Neither can run the ball. Both will go as far as the QB can take them. I don't see any all-Pro or all-MAC WRs or TEs who can reliably catch a ball (good game, though, Falls).

Getting back to Army: Army isn't going to beat us if we hold them to 3.4 yards / carry (that is what we are doing this season).

Anyone know Dawson's status as he didn't play at Toledo?

RE: Game Week: @Army
Surprised that Army is say a 5 point favorite.

Even though Army is a good team, we might match up better with them than the experts realize (because of our strength along the DL).

Curious if we modify the defense as a 4 - 2 isn't what one might expect to use vs. Army.

You guys are scoring machines! Army's men's hoops teams failed to score 60 SIX times last year. Army actually won 2 of those. 02-13-banana

And if Army had played EMU MBB say 4 or 5 years ago, they might have failed to score 50 points.

In those days 'first to 50, wins.' and many times, 50 wasn't even necessary...

BTW, do you have any travel suggestions for a visit to West Point?

I saw a member of the EMU radio crew who suggested that this is what West Point looks like during middle October as the leaves turn... 03-cloud9

Should be a good one. Any game there is a good one, weather permitting. My son goes to Army, I get up there quite often.
