CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE NEW FORMAT
CONCACAF expands club competition field, implements new Champions League format

The expanded CONCACAF club competitions platform will feature 31 club teams – increased from 24 -- beginning with the 2017/18 season. Sixteen clubs from countries around the region, including Canada, Mexico and the United States, Central America and the Caribbean, will compete in a concentrated CONCACAF Champions League to be disputed between February and May of each year.

PHASE ONE

For the new club tournament, runner-up, third, and fourth place teams from from the 2017 Caribbean Club Championship, taking place in the first half of the year throughout the Caribbean, will join 13 qualifiers from across the Central American region – two each from Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama, and one from Belize. It is called the Scotiabank CONCACAF League (CL)

PHASE TWO

The champion of the CL will qualify directly for the Champions League, to be played between February and May of 2018. There, that club will join 15 others – four qualifiers each from Mexico and the United States, the champion of the 2017 Caribbean Club Championship, the Canadian champion, and the overall champions of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Panama.

The format of the new Champions League will mirror the first tournament, with eight home-and-away knockout pairings kicking off four rounds, culminating in the home-and-away Grand Final of the CONCACAF Champions League, which provides the Confederation champion with a berth in the FIFA Club World Cup. The league’s compact new design and dual-tournament format means all of the Confederation’s teams will be able to contest a full championship in a time period fully within one league season, so clubs can take home a trophy while beginning and ending a Champions League phase with the same group of players.

RE: CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE NEW FORMAT
A total of 16 teams participate in the Scotiabank CONCACAF League:

A total of 13 teams from six associations of the Central American Zone. Ordinarily, these teams would come from seven associations, but Guatemalan teams were excluded from this season's tournament.

A total of 3 teams from at most three associations of the Caribbean Zone.

Clubs may be disqualified and replaced by a club from another association if the club does not have an available stadium that meets CONCACAF regulations for safety. If a club's own stadium fails to meet the set standards then it may find a suitable replacement stadium within its own country. However, if it is still determined that the club cannot provide the adequate facilities then it runs the risk of being replaced.

The competition will have three Caribbean clubs and thirteen Central American clubs participating

Costa Rica: Santos de Guápiles; Alajuelense
Honduras: Honduras Progreso; Platense; Olimpia
Panama: Árabe Unido; Plaza Amador; Chorrillo
El Salvador: Alianza; Águila
Nicaragua: Real Estelí; Walter Ferretti
Belize: Belmopan Bandits
Trinidad and Tobago: San Juan Jabloteh; Central FC
Jamaica: Portmore United

The Round of 16 pairing for the 2017 Scotiabank CONCACAF League are as follows:
Santos de Guápiles Costa Rica 8–3 Trinidad and Tobago San Juan Jabloteh
Chorrillo Panama 2–0 Honduras Honduras Progreso
Central Trinidad and Tobago 1–5 Panama Árabe Unido
Águila El Salvador 1–1 (4–3) Nicaragua Real Estelí
Olimpia Honduras 3–0 Costa Rica Alajuelense
Platense Honduras 2–4 El Salvador Alianza
Portmore United Jamaica 1–1 (4–5 p) Panama Plaza Amador
Walter Ferretti Nicaragua 5–1 Belize Belmopan Bandits

The Quarter-Final Round pairing for the 2017 Scotiabank CONCACAF League are as follows:
Chorrillo Panama 0–2 Costa Rica Santos de Guápiles
Águila El Salvador 1–2 Panama Árabe Unido

The Semi-Final Round pairing for the 2017 Scotiabank CONCACAF League are as follows:

MLS is doing well in Concacaf Champions League.
So much so in fact, that sports paper RECORD deems it 'insulting and unacceptable'
that three MLS teams, (Toronto, New York Red Bulls and Seattle) beat three Liga MX teams (Tigres, Xolos, and Chivas) this week.

RE: CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE NEW FORMAT
Those games were the first leg of each tie.

Red Bulls are in good shape because they won the first leg in Tijuana and get to play the second leg at home in New Jersey holding a 2-0 lead.

Seattle and Toronto won their first legs at home, so they're in good shape but have to play well in Mexico next week to close the deal.

RE: CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE NEW FORMAT
CONCACAF Champions League Draw to take place December 3, 2018

How does the draw work?
The draw is divided in two pots:

Atlanta have been placed in Pot 1 along with Liga MX’s four qualifying teams (Monterrey, Toluca, Tigres, Santos Laguna) and a pair of MLS teams in Houston Dynamo and Sporting Kansas City, along with Toronto FC as the winner of the Canadian Championship (Canada’s version of the U.S. Open Cup).

Teams in the first pot will be paired with a team from Pot 2: Independiente F.C. (Panama), Saprissa (Costa Rica), Marathon (Honduras), Guastatoya (Guatemala), Alizana (El Salvador), Atletico Pantoja (Dominican Republic) and Herdiano (Costa Rica).

The U.S. has one spot remaining in the Champions League that will go to the winner of MLS Cup. If it’s Atlanta United or Sporting Kansas City, the spot will automatically go to New York Red Bulls as the U.S. based team with the second-most aggregate points over the past two seasons and will see them placed in Pot 2. Here’s where it gets a little confusing. If it’s Sporting KC that win, even though they’ve qualified already, they will then be placed in Pot 2 for seeding purposes while Red Bulls will take their spot in Pot 1. Either way, Atlanta United can’t be drawn against a side from its own country in the Round of 16 due to tournament rules.
