If one of Tulane's recruiting priorities was to add defensive speed, the Green Wave has found some in Garland, Texas.
Matt Harding, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound cornerback from South Garland High, has committed to Tulane, which has seven commitments.
A three-year starter, Harding had one interception as a senior and 54 tackles for the Class 5A team that went 9-2 last season.
Regarding Harding's speed, South Garland coach Mickey Moss said, "At the Arkansas summer camp, he was (hand) timed at 4.17 (seconds for 40 yards). They said that must be an error, so he ran the 40 again, this time in 4.25 and once more after that at 4.27. I will tell you this, he has a 10.71 (electronic) time for 100 meters, so he is as fast as he needs to be.
"He has played only three seasons with us so he is raw, but he is the best tackler on our team."
Harding is one of three players in the South Garland secondary who has committed to a Division I school, Moss said. Harding visited Boston College, North Carolina and Iowa State, and he also considered SMU and Tulsa. He is qualified academically to play as a freshman.
