As much as we don't like the opponents it is better to have multiple bowl games than the old one bowl model

true, good to have multiple bowl games, but really need to try and secure some good opponents for the top 1 or 2 teams in the league. sun belt teams are fine but not a big draw. American or Big10 teams for the champ would be best. Also could see the G5 pool teams for a secondary tier of 2-3 bowl games just below the New Years Day level. Would love to see the 2nd or 3rd best G5 team get a 8-4 type Big 10 or SEC opponent

The projections I've been checking (from cbssports.com and espn.com) all have the Rockets going to the Dollar General Bowl in Mobile in the latest projections. The guy from CBS says it will be Arkansas State, both ESPN guys say Appalachian State.

RE: Bowl projections 2017-18
If we end up in Mobile playing Ark. State or Troy this year, I would not be happy. We've faced Ark State enough times already. Troy does nothing for us - just like Appy. State last year when we couldn't seem to figure out how to win the game in a bizarre and embarrassing ending to that game. I would still rather see us play in whatever it is called now at Ford Field (Little Caesar's?) against a decent Big Ten team than to incur the costs of heading down to Mobile to play a team that essentially has a home game and has no national attention or following. We don't have much say in who we are paired with - other than refusing an invite. That won't happen.

I know everyone hates the cold weather climate of staying at Ford Field, but I'll still take that unless we can play in Florida, Bahamas, or even in Mobile against a different program - say a middle of pack from the SEC. That helps with recruiting and will excite our players from Florida and Alabama. I can't get excited about playing Ark. State, Appy State, Troy, Georgia State or just about any team from Conf. USA. If Mobile game is still in January (didn't check) - it kills fan attendance from UT.

If we play at Ford Field, then the bowl committee could arrange for golf simulators with courses from Florida showing...and import sand and palm trees to line indoor pools at the hotels.

They are probably assuming the Rockets will not win the MACC.

RE: Bowl projections 2017-18
If there is an opening in the Detroit Bowl game it will likely be vs an ACC team not a Big 10 team. ACC looks like they will fill their bowl slots, Big10 may not, especially if they have a team in the playoff. Mobile Bowl is essentially the SBC winner's playoff game. They won't replace the SBC with anyone. If Rockets win the MACC there's a chance Ohio could take Mobile if UT wants another game since Ohio's band is a big draw and they were well liked down there while UT doesn't travel well for typical G5 opponents. Troy would be a tough challenge just don't intrigue local fans to make the trip. If SEC has an extra bowl team they will have some leverage on what bowl they want and an unranked MAC opponent would be low on the list.

If there was a G5 team to play an SEC, Toledo would be top 5 choices (assuming we are 11-2).

Sadly the SEC wont EVER play a MAC team in a bowl game.

ACC is more likely in Detroit... But what kind of destination is Detroit for someone who lives in Toledo? Sure the fans can travel but the players would be bored out of their minds.

Doesn't pay to win this conference but that would be a nice bowl for those that could get to it, no?

I'd want them to JUMP at playing an ACC team. Great conference, good schools, solid and beatable teams.
