FYI:

From what I remember there is a lot of that "not". Bring your mp3 player as the radio stations are also sparse.

Thanks. I googled all those a few weeks ago when I had mentally laid out the trip. What I was looking for from the El Pasoans was local knowledge on where to stay for ease of the football game and maybe some grub. They've give some good suggestions.

I just fire up Waze on any trip. Been using it for years. Long before Google bought it. Best GPS out there.

I have over 6700 songs on a 3rd generation iPod amigo. I'm good in that department. I have around 700 of them on a playlist of my favorites. My wife is deaf. I have an Infinity G37x that has a Bose system in it. One of the best manufacturer systems I've ever listened to since it's such a small area. My wife turns her hearing aids off and falls asleep within 25 miles of hitting the road. I can crank it up to whatever level I want to hear it at. I've actually been in a buying mood lately and have added several new cds to the iPod.

It has been decades, but if you like desert views, and have the time and inclination, the road between Lordsburg and Globe is interesting.

RE: Question for UTEP people.
A couple of restaurants unique to the El Paso area that I would recommend for authentic Mexican food are Carnitas Queretaro, Taco Tote, El Cometa (get the flautas) Tacos Chinampa. For burgers and craft beer try Steve O's. For fast food try Blakes Lotaburger. For a steak I do recommend Cattleman's but if you don't feel like making the drive Cattle Baron by the airport is also good. If you want some fine dining head downtown to Anson 11.

Things to do are limited. Definitely go on the scenic route drive. It takes you through the mountains. On one side of the street is mansions on the other side is a panoramic view of El Paso and Cd Juarez. If you're feeling adventurous cross over into Mexico. On second thought don't. For shopping there is Cielo Vista Mall and the Fountains across the street. At the Fountains there are a lot of chain restaurants you can't find anywhere else in the city. There is also an outlet mall heading towards Las Cruces.

The hotel mentioned above is fine. I recommend staying at the Hotel Indigo downtown. It's a short five minute drive to the Sun Bowl. The Camino Real is a historic hotel but a bit outdated.

That's all I can think of right now. If you have any other questions let me know and I'll answer them.

The scenic drive is good, but if you like mountains, a trip to Cloudcroft, NM is in order.

Yes if you have time. Several hiking trails including the 8 mile round trip to the summit of Guadalupe peak. Start out at over 5000 ft. and reach a little over 8700. First mile and a half are very steep, so be in decent shape.

Thanks a bunch JC. I really appreciate you writing all that out. Nashville has an Indigo and I've been there before. Very cool place. I checked out the one in El Paso and I think it's actually nicer than the one in Nashville.

I was able to pull up menus on almost every place you mentioned. That's a good list and they'll all go into the folder for the trip. My wife hasn't been on a trip out into the deep west since she was a kid and that was flying to California so this is all going to be a treat for both of us really.

Hopefully (for me) our new coach will have us rolling pretty good and we won't take a beatdown on our trip to El Paso. I'm excited about the stadium visit as much as anything.

A little further west into New Mexico the chilies and food made from them are most excellent. If you have never partaken of those peppers, you are in for a treat. They probably have similar in El Paso. I look forward to the Hatch Chili shipment each year to my local grocery store. Some of them can be quite hot while others are mild and have an excellent flavor.

The Downtowner Restaurant on the first floor of The Indigo Hotel is amazing. A little pricey though.

Don't go to Chico's Tacos. It is an acquired taste that people either love or hate. There are just so many other places that are better. One that I have seen mentioned is the State Line. They have amazing Beef BBQ as well as other things. Not sure if you like gambling but the Sunland Park Race Track and Casino would be a place to check out. I think it is great to meet people from other schools, so let me know if you make the trip and I can stop by to say hello at the game.

Thanks for the invite. As it gets closer to game time I'll definitely bump this back up to the top and might try to hookup with some of you guys if it works out. And thanks for the recommendations.

I am an INFINITI fanboi! Gotta give you props on the ride.

However, being an INFINITI fanboi, nothing bothers us more than misspelling its name...it's INFINITI, with 4 "I's"... and with no "Y" on the end....we may let is slide if someone doesn't CAP its name.

But the point of trying local food is that you can't get it anywhere else. You can get BBQ anywhere in the country but you can only get Chicos in El Paso.

Settle down Beavis. I absolutely know how to spell Infiniti and my only defense is I must have been autocorrected on that and didn't catch it. Glad you did. Love my G37x. Just drove to Florida and back the last week and it performed admirably as always. It's a really fun car and the AWD never gets old, especially at 2:00 in the morning swooping through Monteagle side to side as I did on the way back.

My other car is a 1996 GMC Sierra beat on pickup truck. A Chevy owner once told me GMC stood for 'gay man's Chevrolet'. Made me laugh. I love this old truck and drive it more during the summer than I do the sedan.

I'm guessing that west Texas and Arizona will have some really straight stretches where I can open the G37x up a little bit. I never really have. It's not the fastest car ever from a dead stop but I've never been in one that jumps from 70-95 like this one does. The response in that range is immediate and can get you out of some boxed in spots on the highway quickly.

You can get BBQ anywhere in the country but it varies by regions. Texas is known for beef BBQ but there is big difference in the sauce from west Texas spices to the tang of the rest of Texas. My opinion on Chicos is that you might as well by frozen taquitos and drown them in some water downed tomato sauce with some pepper and a ton of American cheese, stuff you can get at any local store.

So you are saying people shouldnt go there because YOU don't like it? Isn't that a tad selfish? If you are going to visit ELP, promote the local Mexican food. That is what it is known for.
