Cronin: One and Done Rules "Hint at Racism"
From an interview with Matt Norlander of CBS Sports

Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin doesn't like the current system.

"It hints at racism," Cronin wrote in a text to CBS Sports. "Basketball players are black. Baseball predominantly white. Just how I see it. Why can one group be trusted to make decisions and the other is being regulated? No matter what the rules, people will make mistakes. That has been proven for both sports."

I always knew John Calipari was a racist.

RE: Cronin: One and Done Rules "Hint at Racism"
He did say "Hint at racism". Either way I think he is wrong. MLB can bury their bad decisions deep in their minor league systems. That is not the case in the NBA where the Kwame Browns of the game are very public. To me that is why the rule exists in the NBA and not MLB. Regardless, the rule is utter BS and needs to be done away with.

Why does Cronin venture into a topic like this? No matter what his intent, some player/media type/coach/parent may read too much in it. Just Coach/recruit/win

I'm going to guess this only helps with recruiting.

What recruit would possibly be turned off by that statement? A baseball player?

Regardless, it's a short quote in a long article full of coach quotes in the middle of summer. It's a total non-issue.

I don't think Mick really means it. Maybe he's just saying that it might appear to be racist. He's been outspoken about this rule before - probably because he feels that he builds programs the right way by pulling in guys that stick around and are required to go to classes while some universities are rewarded for running their programs like NBA D-Leagues.

Businesses have the right to set qualifications for employment. My company requires a college degree for employment. For whatever silly reason the NBA has set their rule that being one year removed from HS qualifies you for employment in their league. There's no logical reason other than selfishness; current rule gives the NBA more data before making a decision to draft someone and in some cases a star is developed based on what they do in college. It's not racially driven through. Just a product of collective bargaining and current players selling out future 18 year olds who are NBA ready.

I think the one and done rule was set by collective bargaining between the teams and the union. I prefer the MLB approach.

I doubt the league or the union cares about Cronin's opinion.

If MC could recruit to the level of UC being a NBA D League team he would. I do not think MC nor anyone on this board would care if we had a top 5 recruiting class every year and regular trips past the first weekend. That is what college coaches seek to achieve.

Yes. Someone can cry racism all they want, but it is not just the "rich, white owners" who want this. The NBA Players Association (mostly rich, black guys) has consistently advocated for there to be a two year gap from high school. The veterans have skin in the game as they do not want to lose their jobs to 18-19 year old kids who have "an upside" and can start for lesser pay.

Bottom line, the color at play here is not black or white, it is green.

Let's stop side stepping the obvious. Mick can't get those elite 5-star recruits so he's just rather see them go straight to the NBA. If he was pulling in players like Calipari was you'd never hear a peep from him about this rule.

I'm not following. Changing the rule won't really help Mick. Who is considered the top recruit will shift down and the top recruiters will still be getting the best available players. Relatively, we'll be in the same position we are in terms of recruiting top players.

I'm inclined to agree...
