Frankly, I think a lot of FCS folk would like to see us and NDSU gone.

Potomac gets to the heart of the matter: Does hosting games in Boone against Miami, UNC, Wake Forest and East Carolina make a difference if most of them will be losses?

Will the shine eventually wear off playing the likes of Arkansas State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, UA-Little Rock, UL-L, UL-M, South Alabama, Texas State and Troy every year?

Happy to take this bet too - in 10 years, mist Appers wont even remember having been FCS, let alone pine for the good ol days

Seeing how LR doesn't have a football team that game may never have much luster.

I think the appropriate comparison for long term fan appreciation would be Marshall and Boise State. Both programs are now over 20 years removed from FCS. While many fans will remember their days of FCS, it will be remembered as simply a step in their evolution.

Did you tell them coastal Carolina took the sun belt invitation that JMU turned down?

Wait, what? JMU never had an invitation, just ask Jon Alger or Jeff Bourne, they both have clearly publically said that JMU has never had a 1A invitation.

Fear of failure has never been an App State problem. We're scrappers who love to test ourselves against the best. We have a little chip on our shoulder because we're not Carolina or Duke so any chance to beat them and their peers is always welcome. We're not afraid to play schools who aren't the "right people", believe the wrong things, or come from the wrong neighborhood.

Plus, we grow, learn, benefit financially, help the town and merchants, and, have a rockin good time.

Don't know where we'll be 10 years from now but one thing is certain. We won't regret what could have been.

And it would be easier for JMU to move up than NDSU, who moved up from Div 2 in 04'. I don't think they can expand their sub 19k capacity Fargodome, so would have to build a new stadium/dome...

1. FBS at any cost
2. FBS for the right conference / when they get G5 figured out
3. Stay FCS

i would suspect 80% of our fans are in 2.

FBS was always going to work for App, they won 3 NCs in a row, were averaging 30k, have a conference that works and are willing to sacrifice their other sports

Pretty much agree with everything you said. Just to point out, App averaging 30k is a bit of a stretch. App State's attendance avg last 9 years in I-AA:
2005: 17,917 (won NC)
2006: 20,546 (won NC, think was 1st season ever over 20k avg attendance)
2007: 24,218 (beat Michigan, won NC)
2008: 25,161
2009: 24,004
2010: 25,715
2011: 26,211
2012: 26,358
2013: 24,894
http://www.ncaa.org/championships/statis...attendance

I'm afraid we are roughly where App was in 2006. After we win one or two more NC's, and our HC leaves, it may take another 5 years for everyone to understand we belong in FBS and act on it. Hope I'm wrong, but with the current mentality I see us FBS around 2025, or whenever all the GoR's expire and the conferences reshuffle/blow up.

With an enrollment larger than Clemson and the Academics of Furman and a budget and facilities greater than half of many many FBS schools....we are "lost" so to speak.

2019 , so I've been told, is our next chance to be s part of any reshuffle or we will be confirmed as the World' Tallest Midget.

I'm certain most of FCS want us as well as NDSU out of the picture. But the days of competing against small private schools, Elon, RU, Wofford, ... is old and tiresome.

Especially, if JMU is a National Brand and engaged University.

In the "real world ", perception is reality. Maine, NH, SHSU, NDSU ....are considered D2 by folks as well as sports writers alike.

I was surprised at seeing that (had assumed Clemson was like 30k). Anyway, according to each schools website Clemson 23,406 and JMU 21,227...

What event(s) are expected in 2019? Conference realignment?

I've heard something to that point, however, I'm not going to include the " Book It" ......

We all know how that one turned out.

Our only chance is to get in on this blending of C-USA & Sunbelt.

Yes. Realistically that currently non-existent scenario is all that's left for JMU. I do think that Alger is ready to move on a more regionally forming G5 conference.
I also think they'd take a CUSA offer today as the conference currently stands. We haven't had an opportunity with CUSA since ODU joined in 2012.
