My father agrees with you except he was of that opinion a year ago. I was convinced after this year.

But should he be really? I mean you guys are still toddlers when it comes to football and you have already been to two bowl games. Admittedly after that the next logical step is a 8 or 9+ win season and at least challenging for a conference championship. I would say these should come in the next couple of years or maybe then it will be time to move on.

South Alabama AD talks Joey Jones' future, Jags' success, 'need to take step forward'

Erdmann was asked if there was any thought to extending Jones a year or two for recruiting purposes.

"There was consideration but also financial consideration for what is prudent and what is earned," Erdmann answered.

How many wins do the Jags need for Jones to get a extension?

The AD didn't place a number on it. Instead wants to "give our fans something to cheer about, to be proud of and to point to the future where we no where our direction is.

"Yes, we have to achieve at a certain level this year, obviously, but feeding into that is what 2018 hold for us?"

I wouldn't worry, he'll just end up at his alma mater (Bama) as an Asst Coach making more than he does now...

So even if he wins 8 and gets an extension this year recruiting is damaged making it harder to sustain success. AD needs to go.

That is absurd. He is one of the best ADs in our conference and the G5. He's not going anywhere unless he moves up.

Quite absurd. If he is retained, it will be weeks before the early signing date and two months before the traditional signing date. The USA staff is fully engaged with the prospects they feel are good fits and they'll get who they need if CJJ signs a new contract.

Finally, he was asked a direct question. Is this program where it needs to be and done what it has had to for Jones and his staff to continue?

"I think so, yes," he said. "But we have to see the results on the field."

RE: is Joey Jones on the hot seat?
No, Joey Jones is NOT on the "hot seat" yet. At the end of this season, the success or failure of this team will be evaluated. Then the AD will make a recommendation as whether or not to replace him. I truly believe it all depends on how well the team does in conference play.

RE: is Joey Jones on the hot seat?
At least our AD isn't settling on mediocrity. Jones is a great guy and is owed a ton of respect for starting our program and building it into what it is today. But our AD knows that going 2-6 in conference isn't acceptable. Yeah we were 6-6 last year before the bowl, but 2-6 in SBC won't cut it. If we finish 6-6 this year but went 5-1 or 4-2 in SBC I bet Jones is safe.

At the risk of kicking an ant hill, how much of South's early success do you guys attribute to Bill Clark?

I don't think you'll kick an anthill. No one would say that Clark wasn't a big piece of the first four years of the program. He was very innovative in the way he designed his blitzes and in general ran the front seven on defense. Offensive coordinator Greg Gregory was just as important because he brought FBS experience to a staff very lacking in it.
The biggest factor had to be Joey Jones' experience in starting the Birmingham Southern program. Even though he was only there briefly, it taught him what he would need to be successful immediately.

Just to extend this tangent, I'm sure Clark learned some things in Mobile that he's put to use the last 2 years.

No doubt. We all learn from those we work with, especially when all of those on the coaching team are specialists in certain aspects of the game.

Well, that and starting a program from scratch.

RE: is Joey Jones on the hot seat?
It will be interesting to see how Clark does the next couple seasons. I think a lot of South people will be watching and taking notice. We are, or should be, watching Clark's replacement at JSU in John Grass.

I want Joey to win every game he ever coaches, but if he can't get the job done, and make some progress, it may be that time. Hopefully the injury bug stays away this season.
