Big East game thoughts
going to do this thread as a continuous thread with the games....

So far- Providence looks totally overmatched vs Xavier. Xavier not looking great, but PC looks terrible.

DePaul hanging in with Nova. Playing with a ton of spunk.

btw- others comments are most welcome. Since I'm on Mod over on the other place- this is where you can find me unfiltered(kind of like Skip Bayless).

RE: Big East game thoughts
um, what is up with this DePaul/Nova game? Nova looked like they were getting set to run away with it- up 12, and all of a sudden it's a 5 point game with DePaul with the ball. in a word, wow.

RE: Big East game thoughts
wow if DePaul were to pull this upset- it'd be DePaul's first win over a #1 team since 1952 when they beat La Salle.

RE: Big East game thoughts
wow Nova survives thanks to Hart. Garrett with a great look at a 3 at the buzzer that would have sent to OT.
Sunday will be fascinating with St John's and DePaul.

On a bad night for Nova- they made 81.2% of their 2 point shots. 13-16.

RE: Big East game thoughts
yeah a roller coaster 1st half- thought Georgetown was going to get run out of the gym early.

Tonight could have been huge for Georgetown- a win tonight coupled with what happened with Oregon would have been a great kick start for the Hoyas conference season. The Oregon game is just so huge now with Syracuse struggles and even looking further down the road- the UConn game won't help Georgetown out at all.

Guess sets up a huge Saturday- Villanova @ Creighton. Should be fun. And love that it's well placed before the college football playoff sf games.

and St John's gets the first upset of the year over Butler. I loved Mullin's strategy last 10 seconds fouling on purpose. More teams really should do that.....

going into game-
St John's RPI was 231
Butler's RPI was 12

end of the game
SJ RPI 189
Butler RPI 18

RE: Big East game thoughts
While some may be disappointed by the outcome and possible tournament chances for the league, I believe it was a huge win for the league. The league, long-term, needs St. Johns to be competitive, and last night proves that they are on the right track.

On any given night, any team in this conference can beat anybody.

yeah I really agree. And in a weird way, if it's going to happen to a team, you would WANT it to be one of the top 4 teams. It's not like they hung an unexpected loss on say a Marquette or Seton Hall who could be on the bubble.

Saw from ESPN that tomorrow's Creighton/Villanova game is only the 2nd game ever in Big East history with 2 10-0 or better schools playing each other. The other was in 1985- but not what you may have thought. It was Georgetown vs Boston College.

RE: Big East game thoughts
as we enter this weekend- here's the standings and current RPI/Ken Pom rating for all 10 teams:
Villanova 1-0 13-0 #1/6
Creighton 1-0 13-0 #4/19
Xavier 1-0 11-2 #5/16
Marquette 1-0 10-3 #78/33
St John's 1-0 7-7 #188/96
Butler 0-1 11-2 #15/18
Seton Hall 0-1 10-3 #37/55
Providence 0-1 10-4 #45/66
Georgetown 0-1 8-5 #69/53
DePaul 0-1 7-7 #194/173

this weekend schedule
Saturday:
11am Xavier @ Georgetown
1pm Villanova @ Creighton
Sunday:
2pm St John's @ DePaul
3pm Providence @ Butler
4:30pm Marquette @ Seton Hall

1 thing that I hope doesn't happen if it happens is if DePaul wins, I hope folks don't get the narrative that oh well, that was just a fluke for St John's. DePaul played pretty damn well vs Nova of course and could easily have won it. So DePaul winning there wouldn't be the end of the world for St John's.

watching early today- Georgetown looks decent even though it's a 5 point game. The problem is Xavier looks a lot better than Wednesday as well.

1 thing I don't get....

Georgetown scored basket with like 8 seconds to go in the 1st half. Xavier had not used a time out in the 1st half, and if you don't use 1 you lose it.

Well, Mack doesn't use time out, and Xavier is left with a 40 ft shot with no chance of making it.

why not use time out there and get a decent shot?

Mack probably thought they could catch the Hoyas off guard and get a full court drive and shot as a result. Probably thought they thought that Xavier would use a timeout.

Great all around game. Xavier beats Georgetown 81-76

Another sell out crowd for Creighton. They have been a home run addition for the Big East.

after a fumble though it was clear that wasn't going to happen.

good win for Xavier. Georgetown played well. Lost chance. HUGE game on Wednesday @ Providence which could be quite frankly a must win for both teams. Georgetown gets Butler on Saturday and Providence gets Creighton on Saturday. So loser of Georgetown/PC game staring 0-4 square in the face.

Creighton off to a dominant start so far vs Nova. 17-9 and that's 5 minutes in. Only 2nd Big East game ever with undefeated teams. And 1st time with 2 undefeated teams in conference play in 8 seasons. 1st top 10 matchup in Creighton history.

Georgetown 0-1 8-5 #69/53- now 0-2 8-6 #71/56
Sunday:
2pm St John's @ DePaul
3pm Providence @ Butler
4:30pm Marquette @ Seton Hall

huge uptick for Nova in Ken Pom...
pretty big drop in KP for Creighton
really interesting the big drop in RPI for Providence. 6 spots just in 1 day is remarkable.

Big day for me for Seton Hall tomorrow. You have to win those home games against the non top 4 teams.

And really going to be interesting with the St John's DePaul game tomorrow.
