I like the Spiders. Could also go with Buckeyes which would honor their Negro League team from the 40s.

Like many old ones, it came from a sportswriter and had something to do with a Native American player. The roots on this one aren’t deep. I suspect they will find something more in line with Cleveland. Maybe the Flames. Back in the day, they were best known for their river catching fire.
For anyone who cares, I recommend this Joe Posnanski essay:
https://joeposnanski.substack.com/p/changing-of-a-name
Short version: The name Indians was chosen by the local sportswriters in 1915. There was an an American Indian, Louis Sockalexis, who played for the Spiders from 1897-1899, and he was cited by the Plain Dealer as part of the reason for the selection. It seems pretty clear, however, that this was more happy coincidence than impetus.

Well, they were the Spiders, they have been called The Tribe, they already have the Cavaliers, they used to have the Rams, so I guess they should just choose Hokies and close out the state nicknames...
The Cleveland Hokie-Pokies.

Well, it wasn't "at some point" -- FSU has the current and active support of the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

Of Florida, but not of the majority of Seminoles, which are located in Oklahoma. They condemned the use of Seminoles officially in 2013. The characterization of Chief Osceola includes a large number of inaccuracies, which also indicates FSU isn't really interested in honoring anyone as much as having a mascot with a flaming spear.

Yeah as the article states. The Trail of Tears didnt end with "let bygones be bygones." Seminole Council is different from Seminole Tribal Nation...to me it seems like your typical slimy backroom political deal.
"these Oklahoma Seminoles, who are the majority, oppose the name.
As for the Florida Seminole Tribal Council, it is the owner of a series of luxury casino hotels throughout the state where the Seminole “brand” is prominently on display.
For the wealthy and powerful Florida Seminole tribal leaders, the cultural elevation of the football program is a part of their extremely lucrative gaming operation. Defending the school’s use of the name is about defending its brand. That is why the chairman of the Florida Seminole Tribe of Florida, James Billie, said, “Anybody come here into Florida trying to tell us to change the name, they better go someplace else, because we’re not changing the name.”"

I don't disagree that it's slimy. I just don't think it's really a double standard, and I definitely don't think it can be framed as something that happened once upon a time.

Guardians is a pretty good team name, especially when you get deeper into the Cleveland ties the name has. I will be shocked if Washington comes up with anything that good.

RE: Feathers
One of the best set/ups logically I have ever heard for a team nickname was back in the 80s when Evansville IN was awarded a baseball franchise in the American Association, one of the three AAA leagues at that time.
They chose Triplets, the Evansville Triplets, for a few of the reasons below:
1) they were a AAA franchise
2) Evansville is in the SW corner of IN and the metro area is known as the Tri-State area (IN/KY/IL)
3) they were the AAA franchise of the Minnesota Twins

RE: Feathers
There's a similar W&M stadium banner for sale on eBay right now -- it has the feathered logo and border but not the name spelled out. Roughly 12' x 6'. It doesn't say where it came from.
Starting bid is $199.99 plus shipping, for any of you with cash burning holes in your wallets. Personally, at those prices I'll have to be content with our feathery coffee mug from long ago.
