2017 football recruiting
Cards pick up a commitment from a Scout 4* OG Caleb Chandler 6'5" 302#'s out of Jefferson, Georgia. He chose the Cards over such schools as Miami, Mississippi St., Oregon, West Virginia, and Florida. Chandler is the 3rd offensive line commitment in the class of 2017 joining fellow commits Cole Bentley and Ronald Rudd.

https://www.google.com/amp/syndication.b...ent=safari

Scout's official evaluation asserted that "Chandler is an offensive tackle in high school, but his highest ceiling may be at guard on the next level. He is a finisher. Chandler loves to finisher his blocks and to put his opponent in the dirt. He has very good quickness off the ball and he really can fire off the ball low with good pad level."

Chandler will be a welcome addition to the Cardinals.

Even though it's unclear where he'll slot in along Louisville's offensive line, Chandler's ability to play as a tackle or guard might make him an instant-impact contributor once he adjusts to life in a new scheme.

RE: 2017 football recruiting
I saw U of L and VT pulled in some nice commits this past week. Looks to be a solid ACC recruiting season this year.

RE: 2017 football recruiting
VT is putting together a heck of a recruiting class.

Devon Hunter is widely considered the second overall prospect in the state of Virginia behind FSU commit Khalan Laborn, and Hunter committed last Friday.

Over the weekend, VT flipped 4-star LB Dylan Rivers from Penn State.

In addition, signs are pointing towards positive results with both DE/TE Tyjuan Garbutt (rumored to be deciding between VT & Pitt) and OL Mekhi Becton (long considered a UVA lean).

Fuente and company are doing a bang-up job on this first full recruiting class and if things play out the way they're rumored, could potentially bring in VT's best recruiting class ever.

We already established that Fuente and company can coach. If they can also recruit, the rest of the Coastal is playing for 2nd most years.

Barring anything unexpected Clemson closes out it's 2017 class with tonight's commitment of Jennings, LA running back Travis Etienne. Clemson beat out LSU, Tennessee, and Texas A&M for his commitment.

Etinenne is the #8 RB in the country per 247 Sports.

No huge surprises that I see in ACC rankings.

In the national rankings too many teams over 50. Also need more 5* players going to the conference.

Think Clemson makes a big jump there in 2018.

RE: 2017 football recruiting
With the 2017 class done and just waiting on the faxes to roll in on Signing Day Clemson is working hard on 2018 and beyond.

Yesterday they held an Elite Junior Day and i proved fruitful getting commits from the 247 #2 and #4 players in SC.

First off was South Point WR Derion Kendrick, rated as a four star and the #10 WR in the country. He's 6'1" 195lbs. Plays QB for South Point but projects as a WR at the next level and that;s what Clemson recruited him for.

Next was Lewisville DT Josh Belk. Rated as a four star and the #12 DT in the country. He's 6'3" 282lbs.

Clemson now has five commits already for the 2018 class.

Louisville snagged Becton, which is a pleasant surprise. He had lots of attention late in the recruiting process, including Michigan, Michigan State, Oregon and Virginia Tech.

The Cards' O-Line needs help, and Becton is a big piece of trying to upgrade this position. This is probably the most highly regarded group of O-Line recruits in U of L history. Hopefully, they continue to work hard to justify their rankings. Time will tell, of course.

The 2017 GT Class

National signing day has come and gone. Paul Johnson and his staff have managed to add to add a lot of under the radar talent and filled the gaps left by this years graduating class. 24 new faces have joined the Yellow Jackets football program, and each one will be looking to make their mark in the coming seasons

4-Star
Bruce Jordan-Swilling #17 RB ESPN Top 300 (Committed as a LB)
Tre Swilling #27 CB ESPN Top 300
Jaquan Henderson #23 OLB
Jaytlin Askew #32 CB

3-Star
Pressley Harvin III #4 K (Committed as a P)
Connor Hansen #15 OC
Brenton King #33 K
Kaleb Oliver #41 S
Michael Minihan #47 OG
T. D. Roof #55 OLB
Cortez Alston #59 DE
Gentry Bonds #63 CB
Dameon Williams #70 CB
Avery Showell #81 S
Boe Tufele #83 DT (Commit as an OL)
Zach Quinney #96 OT
Jordan Ponchez-Mason #100 RB
Charlie Clark #102 G
Antwan Owens #105 DT
Jerry Howard #113 RB
Tariq Carpenter #117 S
Kelton Dawson #118 DE

2-Star
Tobias Oliver #56 QB-DT

Unranked
Adonicas Sanders WR

Players To Watch:

Offense

Tobias Oliver
While he isn’t considered an elite recruit, Oliver is an exceptional passer and an experienced option quarterback. With Justin Thomas gone, it is likely to be open season at quarterback. As of right now the most experienced QB is Matthew Jordan, but his limited throwing ability could possibly pave the way for a true freshman to take the control of the quarterback position.

Brenton King
A kicker isn’t always an exciting commit, but with Harrison Butker gone, Tech has a big hole to fill. King has an incredible leg. He has a career long field goal of 56 yards to his resume, and 95% of his kick-offs end in touchback. With the kind of leg King has, he could minimize the drop off from losing a talent like Butker.

Defense

TD Roof
Yes he is the son of Ted Roof defensive coordinator, so there are likely people who doubt this guy has real talent. Those people haven’t see this guy play. He played running back, linebacker, kick coverage, and kick return. Really it’s hard to bet against a kid who can do it all. Roof is blazing fast, and delivers punishing tackle after punishing tackle. This guy will definitely make his mark at Tech before it is all said and done.

Jaytlin Askew
Aggressive and angry. This kid plays HARD and hits HARDER. On top of his hard hitting style, this kid has serious speed running a reported 4.36 and a Nike verified 4.24 shuttle. With an aging secondary, Askew could be a big time player for the Jackets in the near future.

RE: 2017 football recruiting
Analyzing Clemson’s 2017 Class – Offense

QUARTERBACK

HUNTER JOHNSON
Rating: 5-stars
Hometown: Brownsburg, I.N. (Brownsburg High School)
Analysis: Hunter Johnson is listed as a Pro-Style QB, but opposing defenses should be wary of the former track-star’s ability to scramble. Johnson has been rated as high as the #1 QB in the country, and as high as the #18 overall prospect regardless of position. Johnson was a member of the prestigious Elite 11 class of quarterbacks, and was also named MVP of the Army All-American game. Johnson has a quick release and impressive arm-strength, and with him already being enrolled on Clemson’s campus, expect him to compete immediately with Kelly Bryant and Zerrick Cooper for the starting QB spot this spring.

CHASE BRICE
Rating: 4-stars
Hometown: Loganville, G.A. (Grayson High School)
Analysis: Chase Brice is much more than just “the other QB” in Clemson’s recruiting class. In fact, there are more schools across the nation where he’d fully be in the mix to start as true freshman. Brice had a 40-7 record as a starter and led his team to the 7-A state championship as a senior. Clemson’s success recruiting Grayson H.S. players continues to impress, with Chase Brice joining players like Wayne Gallman, Ryan Carter, and Nick Schuessler as Grayson-alums that have chosen Clemson. QB Coach Brandon Streeter said that he fully expects both Brice and Hunter Johnson to be completely in the mix for the starting QB job this offseason.

RUNNING BACK

TRAVIS ETIENNE JR.
Rating: 4-stars
Hometown: Jennings, L.A. (Jennings High School)
Analysis: Etienne shocked LSU fans all across the country, as Louisiana’s #1 RB prospect decided to go out-of-state and attend Clemson. Etienne’s commitment to Clemson came just 2 weeks after the Tigers offered him a scholarship – a desperation move of sorts following the decommitment of Cordarian Richardson. Etienne, however, is far from a desperation player. Etienne rushed for nearly 2500 yards his senior season, en route to becoming an ESPN top-150 recruit. He has a great combination of speed, acceleration, and shiftiness, and should remind many Clemson fans of Terry Allen.

WIDE RECEIVER

TEE HIGGINS
Rating: 5-stars
Hometown: Oak Ridge, T.N. (Oak Ridge High School)
Analysis: Tee Higgins might be the most dynamic WR recruit to come through Clemson, and that a very bold statement considering the Tigers have seen the likes of Roscoe Crosby, Jacoby Ford, Sammy Watkins, DeAndre Hopkins, Martavis Bryant, Mike Williams, Deon Cain, and Ray-Ray McCloud come through the program. Higgins’ 6’4 frame makes him a serious candidate to fill the void left by Mike Williams at the boundary position. Higgins earned a plethora of accolades in high school, including winning Mr. Football for the state of Tennessee at the 5-A level and earning an Under Armour All-American game invitation. Higgins will absolutely avoid a redshirt this season, and will create a nightmare matchup for opposing defenses with his combination of height and speed.

AMARI RODGERS
Rating: 4-stars
Hometown: Knoxville, T.N. (Knoxville Catholic School)
Analysis: The son of USC coach Tee Martin, who is widely considered one of the best recruiters in the nation, decommitted from the Trojans to join “Wide Receiver U”. The dynamic duo that will be featured in the years to come between Rodgers and Higgins will be very reminiscent of Mike Williams and Artavis Scott. Rodgers won Mr. Football for the state of Tennessee at the 4-A level, and will also look to compete for immediate playing time to replace the void left by Artavis Scott at the slot position.

WILL SWINNEY
Rating: 2-stars
Hometown: Clemson, S.C. (D.W. Daniel High School)
Analysis: Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney had to sleep with this recruit’s mother in order to get a commitment from Will Swinney, however that is because Dabo Swinney is Will Swinney’s father. The younger Swinney has been referred to as “the hardest worker I’ve ever recruited” by Coach Swinney, and it would not be surprising in the least to see Will Swinney eventually mold into a Hunter Renfrow-esque player.

OFFENSIVE TACKLE

BLAKE VINSON
Rating: 4-stars
Hometown: Citra, F.L. (North Marion High School)
Analysis: Vinson is an early enrollee who is already on Clemson’s campus. This bodes well for adding some extra experienced depth on Clemson’s offensive line, especially following the transfer of former 4-star OT Jake Fruhmorgen. Vinson suffered with injuries during his senior season, but he is quick enough as a pass blocker, and aggressive enough as a run blocker to play either tackle or guard for the Tigers. He’s the versatile type of lineman that coach Robbie Caldwell loves.

NOAH DeHOND
Rating: 3-stars
Hometown: Hightstown, N.J. (The Peddle School)
Analysis: DeHond is a mammoth, standing at 6’7″ and 320 lbs. That’s a big boy. DeHond’s size is something that can’t be coached, and he shows a mean streak that the coaches will love. He will need to cut some of his “bad” weight before he’s ready to contribute, so expect him to redshirt during this upcoming season.

OFFENSIVE GUARD

MATT BOCKHORST
Rating: 4-stars
Hometown: Cincinnati, O.H. (St. Xavier High School)
Analysis: Bockhorst is perhaps the most prolific offensive line recruit in this class. He was rated as a top-250 recruit by 247 and a top-150 recruit by ESPN. He has the leadership skills that echo that of Eric Mac Lain. Bockhorst will be an integral part of Clemson’s offensive line moving forward.

RE: 2017 football recruiting
Analyzing Clemson’s Class – Defense
Clemson certainly lost a great deal of talent on offense, but there were also key exits on the defense. Let’s take a look at who the Tigers are bringing in for what might be the next championship team.

AJ Terrell – CB
Rating: 4-star
Atlanta, GA (Westlake High School)
Analysis: AJ Terrell is one of the most gifted cornerbacks in the nation. Terrell is a back that can read a play and break to it in a hurry. The best think a receiver can do if Terrell is coming is hit the ground. Terrell is coming hard and relentlessly. Watch his highlights. He kills people. Clemson’s Cordrea Tankersly is now a graduate, leaving a hole that AJ can fill. Expect him to be a starter by the end of summer camp.

LeAnthony Williams – CB
Rating: 4-star
From: Roswell, GA (Roswell High School)
Analysis: Williams is a good fit for Clemson. Clemson is not traditionally known for ball-hawks on defense. Williams had 5 picks his senior year, but it is clear that he is more of a lock-down or tackle CB and less of a ball-hawk. He can certainly make plays on the ball and will continue the tradition of Clemson having a “No-fly-zone.” He will be coming out and competing with AJ Terrell for playing time. Do not be surprised to see him receive a red-shirt.

Baylon Spector – LB
Rating: 3-star
From: Calhoun, GA (Calhoun High School)
Analysis: Aside from the fact that he has the greatest sounding “Bond Villain” name ever, this linebacker is a special athlete, as he also played QB in high school. The linebacker position is one that will be in need after the departure of Ben Boulware. There is a ton of young talent at the LB spot, but Spector has the opportunity to come in and play. Shaq Smith will probably start next year and Spector will have plenty of time to develop. Spector is also ahead of the game, as he has already enrolled on campus and will be able to go through spring ball with the team.

Logan Rudolph – LB
Rating: 3-star
From: Rock Hill, SC (Northwestern High School)
Analysis: Athleticism runs in this family. His brother Mason Rudolph is the starting QB at Oklahoma State. Logan is the type of LB that Brent Venables is looking for. He’s fast, explosive, closes gaps, and aggressive. He tends to hit high when he tackles. Rudolph could have gone almost anywhere. He had offers from Alabama, Oregon, Florida, Florida State among others. This deep LB corps just got that much deeper. Oh. And he has already enrolled. So he will be an experienced freshman when Autumn rolls around.

Justin Foster – LB
Rating: 4-star
From: Shelby, NC (Crest High School)
Analysis: The Clemson coaches clearly thought that it was important to focus a large effort on the LB corps. 20% of the players that Clemson signed play linebacker. Foster is a Shrine Bowl selection and twice a state champion. Standing at 6-4 and 247 pounds, Foster would be a constant threat to opposing offenses. That is a big dude. He could be very special at Clemson.

Jordan Williams – DE
Rating: 4-star
From: Virginia Beach, VA (Cox High School)
Analysis: There is a spot on the defensive line open since Carlos Watkins has left. Other than that, the defensive line at Clemson is very young. Jordan Williams will have to bide his time in order to break into the starting lineup. That is not a bad thing though. 6-5 and 240 pounds will turn into 6-5 and 250 pounds of one mean dude.

Overall, this is a very good class. On both sides of the ball. Clemson is showing that quality is better than quantity. Count on Clemson being back again. the 2016 team was very young. Dabo knows how to build off of success.

RE: 2017 football recruiting
Pitt National Signing Day Recap

Pat Narduzzi has put together quite the recruiting class for the upcoming season despite not having an offensive coordinator on staff. The list includes 4 recruits in the top 300 and the class is currently ranked number 32 in the nation by 247 Sports. The class includes 4 players already enrolled for the spring semester and another 20 added on signing day. Meet the member of the newest Pitt recruiting class: #SteeleCity17

Paris Ford – Safety, Steel Valley (Homestead, PA)
Paris Ford is the 3rd ranked player in the state of Pennsylvania, and will stay to play for the hometown Panthers. Ford was a PA state champion this year for Steele Valley, and was the first verbal commitment for the 2017 class when he gave Narduzzi his word back in October of 2015. He solidified his commitment today by signing with the Panthers, after late efforts to flip him were made. He could make an immediate impact in a secondary that struggled a season ago. There is a good chance he will start at free safety alongside Jordan Whitehead.

A.J. Davis – Running Back, Lakeland (Lakeland, FL)
Davis was a late addition to the class as he made his commitment during NSD coverage. Ranked the 19th best running back in the nation, the Panthers are rebuilding their backfield to make up for the loss of James Conner. Davis could also play a big role catching the ball out of the backfield and he could line up as a slot receiver. He joins a crowded backfield with the likes of former ACC Freshman of the year Quadree Ollison. Some are naming him the best Running Back recruit for Pitt since Russel Shell In 2012.

Todd Sibley – Running Back, Archbishop Hoban (Akron, OH)
Sibley is another big time running back recruit that the panthers signed this year. He was ranked as the number 22 running back in the nation and the 15th best player out of Ohio. The battle to be the starting running back come September 2nd at Heinz field will be an interesting one. Sibley, along with Davis will be the future of the Panther backfield and running backs coach Andre Powell is excited:

Charles Reeves – Tight End, Steubenville (Steubenville, OH)
Reeves enters as the 8th ranked tight end in the 2017 class. At 6’5, he should provide a big downfield target for the Panthers who are losing their top tight end from last year, Scott Orndoff. Early indicators point to red-shirt freshman, Chris Clark a transfer from UCLA, to be the starter. However, Reeves will likely have the chance to battle for the starting job in camp and find himself getting significant playing time as a freshman.

Carter Warren – Offensive Tackle, Passaic (Passaic, NJ)
Pitt had one of the best offensive lines a season ago only allowing 10 sacks the entire season. With the departure of starting left tackle Adam Bisnowaty, Warren could be called upon as the next man up. At 6’6 he’s shown decent speed for a tackle and should find a place along the O-line within his first 2 years with the Panthers.

Jaylen Twyman – Defensive Tackle, Woodson H.D (Washington, DC)
Twyman was a priority recruit for Narduzzi and his staff for this class and they managed to get him signed. Pitt loses its 2 of its top pass rushers that anchored the defense against the run. He has good size for a defensive tackle at 6’2 290lbs, and should be able to fill the hole left by Tyrique Jarret.

Demarri Mathis – Corner Back, Lakeland (Lakeland, FL)
The secondary was the glaring weak spot in the Pitt defense last season, and Mathis is one of 2 corner backs that Narduzzi signed in this class. He has 4.5 speed at 6’0 and can hopefully help the Panthers improve their pass defense which ranked among the bottom of the NCAA a season ago.

Albert Tucker – Linebacker, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, FL)
The 3-star linebacker will add some depth to the Panthers defense. He posts a 4.5 40-yard dash and can play as either an edge rusher, or effectively drop into coverage. He totaled 48 tackles in 11 games his senior season, 20 of them being solo.

Kamonte Carter – Defensive Tackle, East Mississippi C.C (Scooba, MS)
Carter was a huge get for Pitt to strengthen their defensive line. The JUCO transfer was ranked the number 14 DT in the country. He will have 3 years of eligibility with the Panthers. He’s another recruit responsible for making up for the loss of Ejuan Price and Tryique Jarret.

Kyle Nunn – Safety, Fidnlay (Findlay, OH)
Nunn is a big 6’3 safety looking to improve the defensive backfield in the coming years. He can play both linebacker and safety but I would imagine he will have a solidified position come the season. He faces stiff competition at safety with Jordan Whitehead returning and the addition of Paris Ford.

Carson Van Lynn – Defensive Tackle, Worthington Kilbourne (Columbus, OH)
Van Lynn has impressive speed for his size running a sub 5 40-yard dash while weighing in around 240lbs and standing 6’7. That combination of size and speed could see him climb the depth chart in camp as the Panthers search for a dominant pass rusher along the line.

Grant Carrigan – Tight End, Pine Richland (Gibsonia, PA)
Carrigan can offer a big target on the field for the offense next season, and has family ties to the University. His dad played basketball at Pitt in the 80’s, and he will now try to create his own legacy on the football field.

Cameron Bright – Line Backer, Park Crossing (Montgomery, AL)
Bright is a speedy outside linebacker who showed in high school he can get into the backfield quickly. He should be very useful in blitz schemes and has shown that he can breakdown and make an open field tackle. He will provide the Panthers with more depth at the outside linebacker position.

Gabe Houy – Offensive Tackle, Upper Saint Clair (Pittsburgh, PA)
Houy is listed at 6’7 and is a big physical tackle that was named first team all-conference last season. He is quick enough to reach up to the linebackers in a zone blocking scheme and pull around as a lead blocker. He is also solid as an outside edge pass blocker.

Dontavius Butler – Wide Receiver, American Heritage (Fort Lauderdale, FL)
One of three receivers added in this class, it should be an interesting battle to see who will join Quadree Henderson and Jester Weah. He is a good route runner and has the speed to beat man coverage on the outside. AT 6’2 he could become a key red zone target throughout the season.

Darian Street – Wide Receiver, Liberty (Bethlehem, PA)
Street may be a familiar name with Pitt fans. Devin Street played for the Panthers from 2009-2013. Now his brother Darian has signed his letter of intent trying to write his name into the Pitt history books. He brings the potential to take the top off the defense. He also has experience with the jet sweet, something that was very successful for Pitt this last season.

Michael Smith – Wide Receiver, Vero Beach (Vero Beach, FL)
Another quick receiver added to the offense, he also brings reliable hands to the receiving corps. Smith has shown the ability to get up field quickly and to gain as much after the catch as possible. He had 66 receptions for 1556 yards and 23 touchdowns in 12 games during his senior season.

Owen Drexel – Center, Montclair (Montclair, NJ)
The three-star center was ranked number 15 at his position. While it is likely that Alex Officer will keep his starting position from a year ago, Drexel provides depth at the center position. He has the potential to anchor the offensive line in the future.

Jason Pinnock – Corner Back, Windsor (Windsor CT)
Pinnock is another corner brought in who will likely have the chance at playing time immediately. After the performance of the secondary last season, it wouldn’t be surprising if every starting job in the secondary is open to competition. The starters likely won’t be decided until camp.

Tyler Sear – Tight End, Neshannock (New Castle, PA)
Sear is a physical tight end who can block, and get out in pass schemes providing a 6’5 target for his quarterback. With Orndoff gone, he has a chance to compete with fellow Steel City 17 member Charles Reeves. He has reliable hands for a tight end and could be a big red zone target for Pitt this season.

RE: 2017 football recruiting
A sneak peek into the future of the Yellow Jackets football and analysis of what they bring to the table for Georgia Tech.
While these players may seem a tad under the radar, Paul Johnson and his crew have a knack for finding just the right players for his system. Here is the breakdown and analysis of a few players from the class.

2017 Offensive Commits

Offensive Line
Michael Minihan OG ***
St. Louis School (Honolulu, HI)
6’3″ 284lbs
40 Time: 5.36 ¤
Bench Max: 335 lbs ¤
Squat Max: 570 lbs ¤
Deadlift: 595 lbs ¤
Pros: This man has EXCELLENT footwork in pass blocking. He blocks aggressively and knows how to finish off blocks. Minihan has few issues with making blocks in the second level which is crucial for Paul Johnson triple option to work. He appears to have a fairly lean frame and carries it well on the field.

Cons: Minihan needs to improve his hip flexibility to be an effective blocker at the college level. Played tackle in high school, but he will need to transition to guard due to his stature.

Summary: I like this fit for Johnson’s style of blocking. Minihan is already an athletic and talented blocker. Moving him inside to be a pull blocker and a second level guy could really utilize his talents.

Zach Quinney OG ***
Savannah Christian Prep (Savanah, GA)
6’5″ 265lbs
40 Time: 5.00
Bench Max: 320 lbs
Squat Max: 400 lbs
Deadlift: N/A
Pros: Really nice technique as a run blocker. He explodes off of the line and stays low at the point of attack while keeping his hands inside the shoulder pads. Shows great athleticism as a downfield blocker.

Cons: The guy needs to gain 20+ pounds to be an effective blocker. He’s not really used to blocking larger players, and needs to improve his strength and footwork to do so.

Summary: Quinney will have to get bigger and stronger to be an impacting lineman. He’s a solid player, but I would recommend redshirting a year.

Conner Hansen OC ***
Lawton Chiles (Tallahassee, FL)
6’2″ 325lbs
40 Time: 5.22
Bench Max: 355 lbs
Squat Max: 520 lbs
Deadlift: 545 lbs
Pros: Great combination of size and athleticism. Shows good stamina and versatility as he played guard, center, and nose tackle for his team.

Cons: Doesn’t really jump off of the tape. Doesn’t finish off blocks well, and needs to be more of a snap to whistle blocker. Relies too much on his size and natural ability as opposed to technique to make his blocks.

Summary: This kid could be a monster for the Yellow Jackets. He only needs to sharpen his technique and be more aggressive. While I listed a lot of cons for him, these things are things that I’m sure coach Johnson and crew can help him with easily.

Running Backs
Jerry Howard RB ***
Northwestern (Rockhill, SC)
6’1″ 210 lbs
40 Time: 4.54
Bench Max: 305 lbs
Squat Max: 445 lbs
Deadlift: N/A
Pros: This guy is perfect B-Back material for Paul Johnson’s offense. He’s a Great downhill runner that keeps his feet moving through contact. Not only does he have good explosion at the line, but he also has enough speed to burn secondaries. Howard is a capable pass catcher out of the backfield as well.

Cons: He’s not an elite blocker by any stretch. Howard needs to learn to chop block seeing Johnson’s offense thrives when everyone blocks their guys.

Summary: Could he be another freshman star for Paul Johnson? My heart wants to say yes, but my brain says redshirt him a year. With Dedrick Mills and Clinton Lynch already established as a potent one-two punch, waiting a year will do wonders for Howard’s career. I don’t see why he’s a two star guy with his size, strength, speed, and catching ability, but I guess that’s why I don’t make the big bucks.

Athletes
Tobias Oliver ATH(QB/WR/AB) **
Northside (Warner Robins, GA)
6’2″ 175 lbs
40 Time: 4.48
Bench Max: 265 lbs
Squat Max: 375 lbs
Deadlift: N/A
Pros: Tobias is a tough, aggressive runner despite his lean build. He has a keen eye for reading the defense while running the triple option, and times pitches really well. When throwing deep across the middle, he really drives off of his back foot giving it plenty of zip. His height could really be an advantage in the passing game for Tech

Cons: If he’s gonna play quarterback for Paul Johnson, hes gonna need to put on a few more pounds. He played almost entirely out of the shotgun in his high school career, so he will need to learn to play under center. Tobias has a tendency to throw off of his back foot on shorter passes which gives the defense a better chance to make a play.

Summary: Oliver has a lot of potential as a triple option quarterback. He has a very similar playing style as Justin Thomas with a longer frame. While I doubt he will get the starting job his freshman year, he will definitely heat up the quarterback competition at Tech.

2017 Defensive Commits

Defensive Backs
Tre Swilling DB ****
Brother Martin (New Orleans, LA)
6’0″ 180 lbs
40 time: 4.5
Vertical: 38.5″
Pros: Tre Swilling is a long, athletic corner back. He uses his length and speed to bait quarterbacks into throwing passes he can easily break up. He makes excellent breaks on short routes, and runs stride for stride with receivers effortlessly.

Cons: He needs to get better at getting a hand on the ball. Just being tight on the receiver won’t cut it against elite college receivers.

Summary: Tre has a high ceiling, and if he continues to improve his game, he will be an impact player sooner rather than later.

Jaytlin Askew DB ****
McEachern (Powder Springs, GA)
5’9″ 170 lbs
40 time: 4.36
Vertical: 39″
Pros: This guys is scary fast and has great footwork to boot. He has incredible hands for a corner back and is adept at baiting the quarterback and high pointing the ball. Askew isn’t afraid of contact and is a solid tackler. Also he could be a dynamic kick returner for Tech with his speed and agility.

Cons: His height could play a factor in his ability to guard taller receivers. He has a tendency to overplay routes and sometimes lets the receiver get inside and/or under him. His athleticism keeps this from being a problem for him in high school, but college QB’s will exploit that flaw in his game.

Summary: This guy is a freakish athlete that is an interception machine. With some fine-tuning to his game, he could be a great lock down corner.

Gentry Bonds DB ***
Riverdale (Mufreesbor, TN)
6’0″ 192 lbs
40 time: N/A
Vertical: N/A
Pros: Ouch! This kid knows how to use his size that’s for sure. His size and physicality as a corner make him excellent in run support, but I see him transitioning to a head-hunting safety role like Corey Griffin or AJ Gray.

Cons: Bonds has relatively slow feet for a corner. His long striding running style serves him well in covering deep routes, but he is normally a tad late on curl routes and comebacks (although you can bet he will still bring the boom if the receiver catches it).

Summary: Bonds looks like a future safety or possibly a nickel corner. He has great size and hits with plenty of pop.

Dameon Williams DB ***
Norcross (Norcross, GA)
5’11” 170 lbs
40 time: 4.5
Vertical: N/A

Pros: I get tired just watching this guy play! His physicality in press coverage appears to be in the elite category, and his hard hitting style of play makes him a scary guy to run up with for sure. This cat can bring the pain!

Cons: He is a tad on the lighter side, and tends to tackle a bit high. He doesn’t have trouble bringing guys down, it’s just in college that often leads to an ejection for targeting.

Summary: Williams is a tough, physical corner that plays great man coverage and knows how to make earth-shaking tackles in space. This guy could easily fit in as a nickel corner role with his tackling ability.

Linebackers
Bruce Jordan-Swilling (Brother of Tre Swilling) OLB ****
Brother Martin (New Orleans, LA)
6’0″ 215 lbs
40 time: 4.57 ¤
Bench: N/A
Squat: N/A
Pros: This kid is really athletic. He’s the number 13 OLB in the nation, and on top of that he also played running back and returned kicks for his team.

Cons: There is not a lot of tape on him playing linebacker, still his athleticism is evident, and there must be a reason why he so highly touted as a linebacker.

Summary: Jordan-Swilling really athletic guy that could be a real weapon in this 4-2-5 defense of Ted Roof.

TD Roof (Son of Ted Roof) ILB ***
Buford (Buford, GA)
5’11” 200 lbs
40 time: N/A
Bench: N/A
Squat: N/A
Pros: This guy can HIT! TD Roof is another uber athletic linebacker that played running back, special teams, and linebacker for his school. This guy knows how to tackle and puts a lot of pop behind his pads.

Cons: His is a bit small for a linebacker, but he will more than likely catch up once he gets to Tech. No applicable measureables are available for Roof, but his tape speaks for its self.

Summary: He looks like another athletic linebacker that will fit well in his father’s defense. His explosiveness and versatility will make him a weapon for the Ramblin’ Wreck.
Defensive Line

Cortez Alston WDE ***
Westminster School (Atlanta, GA)
6’3″ 250 lbs
40 time: 4.7
Bench: N/A
Squat: N/A
Pros: Alston has the right size for a 4 or 5 technique defensive end. He plays smart, and doesn’t get caught over pursing the ball carrier. He also has little issues breaking blocks to make tackles in the run game.

Cons: The guy has little explosiveness off the snap. His tape seems to show he has a lack of violence at the point of attack, and difficulty getting off of blocks to get in the backfield.

Summary: Alston needs to be more aggressive. He has the size, the coaches at Tech will help him with improving his athleticism, and when they get that combo rolling, he’ll be a nice defensive end.
