RE: 2016-2020 MLB Thread
Ross was ejected in fourth inning last night. Here is a good tidbit from Jesse Rogers of ESPN Chicago, "Umpires have a tough job and we focus too much on it but since Ross got ejected and it was a storyline, midway through the game, Bacchus had a correct call pct of 83.3%, which would have been lowest this season. Went up to 85% by game's end which is 6th lowest." In other words, Bacchus was absolutely awful last night. That type of inconsistency behind the plate is inexcusable and the most frustrating part is that there will be no consequence. The players are just supposed to adjust to a zone that looks like it was drawn by a 4 year old. Luckily, Cuzzi missed a call at third...replay showed that Bote maintained his foot with third for the force out. Because the throw pulled him off, he also tagged the runner on the foot before he got to the base...despite getting him out twice, he was called safe (Vasgersian concluded that Chicago was lucky to get the win, somehow).
I'll say, worse than the umpires is ESPN's Sunday Night broadcast. Matt Vasgersian and A-Rod are awful. If you watched the game without any knowledge of the NL Central you would think that the Cubs are a struggling last place team and obvious sellers this year, while the Cards are World Series contenders. In reality, they're separated by 2 games and they've only played one series against each other this year. With 15 games to go, it is incredibly frustrating that they spend more time talking about where Kris Bryant will traded in July than the Cubs opportunities this year. Then, after Javy Baez hits a homerun, A-Rod's "analysis" is that Javy may be a good hitter one day if he develops better plate discipline. I know who Javy is and I love him. He has flaws but wondering ON AIR if Javy is coachable is awful analysis. I worry about Javy's back as he gets older because he torques his body more than most and he's going to swing, but it's also worth noting that is OPS is currently higher than all free agent shortstops. Higher than Correa, Seager, Story (and Lindor), and OPS takes into account hos awful walk rate. He's not Seager, Lindor or Tatis, but he is a really, really good shortstop in this league and he had a great post season in 2016. To suggest that he's an unknown commodity, or that he's not coachable is a garbage take which seems to be all A-Rod is good for.
Chicago's Marquee production with Boog Sciambi and Jim Deshaies is significantly better than the garbage ESPN produces week after week.
