One of these days, I'd like to hear Jeff talk about recruiting methodology. Do we evaluate these kids, talk to them and they say they might be interested in ODU before we offer a scholarship, or are we just throwing them out there to these guys in hopes of starting the conversation. I don't see the point of just throwing one at someone if they have absolutely no interest in ODU. Maybe I'm wrong.

Agree Jump. Just like in a real job, if you keep asking people to come work for you and people consistently say no, the perception becomes you have a lousy place to work. Better to keep all these offers quiet until there is some indication of interest. Let's face it, Antwan Walker aint gonna be a monarch, so why embarrass yourself?

this is kind of a stretch. so we should wait for them to come to us begging for a scholarship so we can look like we're in demand? we can't get good players if we don't offer the good players.

All it takes is one or two high level commits before you can start getting others. You miss all the shots you don't take..

But maybe someone can bring up recruiting tonight at the BBQ? Although I doubt JJ will say anything with much detail, you'll still get to see what his poker face looks like.

Your stretching now. Never said don't ask good players. Just have to know when you have a snow balls chance and when you don't. You tell me, what is the point and what's served by asking kids out of your league to come play for you. Hoping for a miracle?

Also, it looks good to be on the lists with a bunch of P5 schools for kids even if you aren't going to land them.

RE: 2016 Old Dominion Basketball Recruiting Den
Here's the scenario I envision> We're at a tournament, AAU, whatever and we see a kid we like. We go make an introduction, ask if they'd have any interest in knowing more about ODU and if they say yes we begin serious recruitment. At some point, when there seems to be bonafide interest, we make an offer and see what happens from there. You may have that conversation with 50 kids a year, who knows? But at least they've shown interest in starting some kind of relationship, for whatever reason.

Im not sure what is embarrassing? On average there are a couple spots open and you offer over 20-25 kids. Having a kid that is offered a scholly goes elsewhere isn't embarrassing, it happens everywhere.

Also remember kids get offers from bigger schools, but those schools view them as fallback options and won't take the kids on unless other players go elsewhere or kids transfer away.

Because I'm familiar with Walker, this is late in the process and the bigger schools just now got involved. I don't know case with NC State, but Georgetown doesn't even have a spot for him unless other kids leave. (or he goes to prep school) Out of the other schools on that list, where would he go that would be a step up from ODU?

Personally I would never think that it is an embarrassment to offer anyone. There my be factors involved in every player that we offer that could include relationships with the coaches, other players, family in the area or other factors that influence a players decision to accept an offer. Every Player and the families of these young men will make decisions based on what is best for them. I don't think the coaches or the majority of supporters or ODU fans would ever be embarrassed over an offer to any player.

You wouldn't be embarrassed by the offer. You'd be embarrassed by the refusal. Over and over and over again.

This makes no sense at all. Are you suggesting we only recruits kids whose other offers are from low majors or mid majors "equal" to us in your mind? Our basketball program is much better than VT's for example and they are in the ACC.

Why don't people absorb what they read?? I am not suggesting any thing of the sort. Go back and re read what I've said.

Agruable at best. It's apples and oranges. Since they play far tougher competition than us we'll never know.

Yet, we beat them 4 out of the last 5 times we've played.

Tell me about their record against us, their post season record, etc.

Talk about absorbing information, I hope you aren't a lawyer if you are arguing our basketball history isn't better than theirs.

Sorry, I was off the grid there for a while. Looks like you got the info though. Verbalcommits shows him as a two-star recruit. We should have a chance.

Myopic vision. Widen your lense. That was years ago. We also beat UVA ....6 years ago? . Do we have a better program then them?

So, do you think, all things being equal, MOST kids would say "let's see ODU or VT? I have an offer from both schools, which one do I chose? ODU has a far better program and they even beat VT 4 out of 5 times they played, back in the 1990's, or do I go with VT, who plays on television, against the best competition in the country night after night?"
