Here's an interesting thread from USF message board on this phenomenon. I really don't think it's that big of a deal but apparently the folks at USF do.

"Wow! Just wow! Really shows the level of engagement the student body has with the football team.
Students will be wearing purple shirts in an end zone with a pirate ship. Go ahead and paint the ECU logos in the end zone and call it a day.
What a joke!"
"Playing in a Buc stadium is going to be HOMECOMING for ECU..."
"We are USF and our school colors are green and gold. Why the hell would we even consider a different color?"
"Am I the only one wondering why it would be purple regardless of who we are playing?"
"Everyone makes mistakes...
Yes, but those other schools do not make the news ONLY for mistakes/gaffes."
"Who actually approved this? Serious question. Any help is appreciated."
"If it's any help, in my four years at USF the homecoming colors always included purple. They probably just stuck with it for years and didn't think twice."
"I'm not one to overreact to stupid things, but this mistake is ridiculous. I hope no students are dumb enough to wear these to the game and if they are dumb enough, hopefully they have friends that tell then, 'Take that **** off, what r u thinking.' "
"They should sell the purple ones at the game to visiting ECU fans so they can make some of their money back!"
"This can't be real"
"I'm just catching up on this thread... but your excuse is BULL ****. These are COLLEGE STUDENTS... seriously we can't expect that on that committee they SHOULD KNOW WHO THE OPPONENT AND WHAT THEIR COLORS ARE? Good lord... really?"
"So obviously that means the AAC has a mole in USF student government. They deliberately scheduled ECU for our homecoming game after USF decided to make purple shirts."
"At least we don't play in TDECU stadium."
"If I were a player I would feel betrayed by the fan base.....
I guess many fans feel this way already."
"Maybe our players will get confused and play like ECU"
