Wildcats had little choice
Tom Sorensen

Tom Sorensen has been a columnist at The Observer for 20 years and has been at the paper for 25, writing about nearly every sport in the
Carolinas.

I love the Southern Conference’s members, traditions, rivalries and geography. There’s something wonderful and these days rare about schools that stretch from Carolinas mountains to the Low Country getting on a bus and getting together to play.

The Southern Conference ceased to be the Southern Conference as we know it when football powers Appalachian State and Georgia Southern announced their departure and understudy basketball power College of Charleston did the same.

Davidson was presented with a challenge. Stay in the conference, continue to dominate basketball and hope to win an occasional NCAA men’s tournament game.

Or head north to compete against schools with bigger gyms, bigger budgets and bigger big men

Atlantic 10 offers challenge, reward for Davidson basketball
[Image: 12085242.jpg]

DAVIDSON Davidson College’s impending move from the Southern Conference to the Atlantic 10 is one of the rare conference realignment moves motivated by basketball rather than football.

In a time when schools are changing conferences for bigger television money for football, Davidson will go the Atlantic 10 in the 2014-15 season in search of an elevated national profile, a more challenging conference schedule and high-caliber recruits for its men’s basketball program.

'Cats Fall in OT to Western Carolina in Semifinals
[Image: davidson+wcu.jpg]

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Despite six players in double figures and shooting 54.9 percent, top-seeded Davidson suffered a 99-97 overtime setback to Western Carolina in the semifinals of the 2014 Southern Conference Men's Basketball Tournament Sunday evening at the U.S. Cellular Center.

The Wildcats, who had their 13-game winning streak snapped, will play in the postseason NIT by virtue of their regular season crown.

Senior Chris Czerapowicz paced Davidson (20-12) with a season-high 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including a perfect 5-for-5 effort from the line. De'Mon Brooks, who played just 26 minutes due to foul trouble, finished with 17 points, Jake Belford and Tyler Kalinoski added 15 each, while Brian Sullivan and Jack Gibbs had 11 and 10, respectively.

Western Carolina (19-14) was just as impressive at the offensive end shooting 51.6 percent overall and making 27-of-34 free throws. The Catamounts also held a 36-25 advantage on the glass and pulled down 15 offensive rebounds, which led to 25 second-chance points.

Davidson takes on bigger challenge
Bob McKillop's team will be tested nightly in move to Atlantic 10 from Southern

My friends, there is a big difference between playing the likes of Chattanooga and Furman in league play, or Saint Louis, VCU, Massachusetts, Dayton, St. Joe's and LaSalle in the A-10.

Since the Southern Conference is a one-bid league, there's more pressure to win the conference tournament and the league's automatic NCAA bid. You can reach the NCAA tournament from the A-10 on an at-large bid, but the regular-season schedule is tougher. The A-10 is loaded, with six teams making the Big Dance last season, each winning at least 24 games.
