Right State of Mind - HW article on Nabal Jefferson
Great story on scholar-athlete Nabal Jefferson in the Daily Chronicle this morning. From the article:
On the field, Jefferson has been a key part of the Huskies’ defensive line this season, notching 56 tackles, a sack and six tackles for loss. NIU ranks ninth in the nation with 38 sacks.
Off the field, Jefferson carries a 3.78 GPA in accountancy and does volunteer charity work near his home on the South Side of Chicago. He also speaks at his alma mater, Marist High School, as well as other schools around the area where he grew up.
Rod Carey has only known Jefferson for two seasons, but said people can learn something from him and what he’s accomplished. Carey said his defensive tackle is in a position where his life is going to be “completely changed.”
“I’m talking about me,” Carey said. “If I can’t learn something from him, then I’m kind of missing the boat.”
Nabal, you make us proud!

Also really love the way that Rod Carey talks about him, and I'm assuming the rest of the team. Big different from Kill a few years ago.
The more I think about it, the more I'm really liking the inside promotion of Carey to this position.

If Nabal had played for the Huskies in any other year (except 2011), he could qualify as my favorite player.
This year, I cannot single out just one player. NJ is my favorite D-lineman, although Baxter-the-Sackster comes close.

Too bad we burned his RS year in 2008. It'd be great to have Nabal back in 2013.

I have not seen anything yet that makes me think that he is not up to the job. I will not judge his long term ability based on success or failure to win the Orange Bowl. Instead I will be looking at the following
1) Can he get the verbals that we already have to remain committed to the program
2) Can he build a staff of assistant coaches that are = to the staff that coach Doeren assembled for each of the past two seasons
3) Can he sell the program to new recruits
4) Can he compete for a MAC championship in 2013
