Love East Car FB. Great fans. But when thier 40,000 fans in stadium, nobody home watching TV. ACC has NC rap up. These exp are about schools that can grow & Potental TV markets. Nobody fits this catorgory better than Temple. It might never happen, but a conf will always take that chance. Temple fills the Linc, UCF fills the Citrus bowl, Tulane fills the superdome. BE stikes gold. East Car has max out.

Quote:What teams should we consider?
What TV markets dose the BE have now?
What TV markets will the prospective schools bring?
What is the enrollment of these schools?
What are the stadium capacities of these schools?
Where their alumni are located and how big is the base?
What recruiting area will be influenced by them?
What is their current budget?
Another factor to consider is popularity. You can claim 'tv' markets all the time, such as RU or SU claiming they bring the NYC market. But you need to look at ESPN's polls of tv viewers and their habits.
<a href='http://und.collegesports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/090304aab.html' target='_blank'>ESPN College Football Sports Poll</a>
As can be seen by the above link, Penn State and ND have a stranglehold on Northeast College Football fans. And while SU, BC, and Pitt have gained over the past two years with both the Nittany Lions and the Domers in a big slump, it's easy to see why the Big East has difficulty with TV contracts for football.
Here's hoping that within three years, PSU's popularity is threatened enough by SU, Pitt, and UConn to actually consider joining a conference with them. With PSU on board, BC, Maryland, and ND might even be possible.
Cheers,
Neil

not to sound mean...but ND or Penn St. joining the Big East is like us wanting Bama to joing C-USA.
if 9 teams:
Memphis (suprise right!)
Louisville
Cincy
Pitt
WVU
Rutgers
USF
UConn
Cuse
i think we would be the easiest to fit in with our relationship with UL, UC, USF and a good potential rivalry with WVU...our Facilities, and coaches.
if 12 teams:
Memphis
East Carolina
Central Flordia
Marshall
Louisiville
Cincy
USF
WVU
Rutgers
UConn
Pitt
Cuse
i think either would work.
Go Tigers!!!

That's a horrible comparison for a number of reasons. One, the Big East is a BCS conference C-USA is not. Penn State fits in the Big East, Alabama doesn't fit into C-USA even with UAB in the conference. If Penn State moved into the Big East and competed at a high level they would be in the hunt for a BCS bowl and national title. The same can't be said for Alabama moving into C-USA. Penn State and Notre Dame have some history with the Big East, Joe Paterno for one has shown interest in moving into the Big East, as much as that is worth. Alabama has no history with C-USA. Also, Big East schools have pretty big budgets with big facilities, even many of the new schools moving in, a lot of C-USA can't say the same, mainly because of the BCS. Apples and oranges. I know some people want to compare the Big East and C-USA but they are two completely different animals.

The difference is that there is zero chance of Bama joining C-USA since the Crimson Tide has far too many ties to the SEC to ever leave it - including rivalries.
PSU isn't part of the B10 for those reasons, they are part of the B10 because they needed a safe harbor when the BE rejected them before and remain part of the B10 because of the CIC.
Their 'rivalries', Pitt, SU, WVU are part of the BE. The problem is that none of those three programs are 'national' enough to secure the kind of athletic financial security that the B10 has.
As for the academic financial security, the B10's CIC is an interesting piece as well. Right now, New York is trying to emulate the CIC in their Centers for Excellence strategically located along cities near the Erie Canal and the Hudson River. If they prove successful, they will bring in Binghamton by going to the state's second river, the Delaware.
If the initial NY centers prove successful and then are extended to the Delaware that will lead to coalitions with other Delaware River states such as Pennsylvania and New Jersey - which in turn could see further consortiums along the Susquehanna, Allegheny, and Ohio Rivers.
So, while Bama joining the C-USA has zero chance, the notion of PSU joining with its northeastern brethren has about a 5-10 percent chance of happening.
The first step toward that happening is for Pitt, SU, WVU, Louisville, and Cincinnati to become strong national programs. Without that, there will be no chance whatsoever.
Cheers,
Neil

Syracuse Dominates: Syracuse, Utica-Rome, Watertown, Elmira, Binghamton and Rochester markets
Syracuse Controls: Buffalo and Albany Markets
Syracuse has a minority factor in NYC, Burlington-Plattsburgh, Scranton-Wilkes-Barre and Poughkeepsie Markets

While the University of Delaware was mentiond by some it is probably not a potential candidate and would not leave I-AA as long as I-AA exists. UD's fan base is essentially the state of Delaware which is less than a million people. The media markets that cover Delaware are both Philadelphia and Baltimore, but only a portion of those markets. The alumni are heavily concentrated in these two markets though. Delaware is run by a very capable administration which is also conservative and not prone to over emphasize athletics over the primay goal of the institution. It is also one of the wealthiest state universities in the nation with an endowment similar to much bigger states' primary universities such as Penn state. Delaware has very nearly filled their stadium ever since the mid-60's and has sold out every game the last few years. The stadium only holds 22K though. UD has a great mid-sized football tradition but is not a big name in athletics and would not bring a ton of name recognition to the BE which is really what the BE needs now with the recent defections. Just my opinion.

Memphis has the most potential of any of the realistic candidates. I don't think people realize how significant their presence is in the Memphis media market. They are always the top sports story during the evening news on game days even if the Grizzlies are playing on the same night. Also when Deangelo Williams made his decision to return for his senior seaon it was covered on the front page of the entire paper. Every single Memphis basketball game is carried on TV locally and get large ratings. And football is beginning to take off. They have had back to back winning seasons and have averaged over 41,000 in attendance including 50,000 for Louisville and Southern Miss on weeknight games. The athletic budget is 23 million this year and is completely self sufficient, without any BCS revenue. I think that if you put Memphis in BCS conference you would see the football program really take off. Believe it or not but Memphis is a huge college football town and is hungry for a successful big time Tiger program. Memphis has a strong relationship with the Liberty Bowl and get huge financial support from FedEx. Another thing to consider is what they pay their coaches. Calipari makes 1.5 mil a year and West recently signed a deal for over 850K with incentives to push it over a million. I'm curious what ECU pays their coaches.

just in case...............Toledo #70, however Detroit #10 is only 45 minutes north and many people on the outskirts of Detroit get Toledo TV. Detroit is also a place where many students and a large percentage of Alumni live. #16 Cleveland the viewing area is only a few counties over, also a large alumni base. Columbus #34 another large alumni base. Imagine northern Ohio and Michigan suddenly gaining interest in the BE, along with the Big 10, just a thought.
I know no one wants to see Toledo in the BE, but we could make a splash in ratings. Toledo has been a solid football program for years if they went to the BCS our facilities, and support would only get better, and the program could only get better. If you look at what they have done with such a small budget its impressive. Twelve straight winning seasons and a top 7 school in football winning percentage in the last 10 years.

Glassbowl, I like your ideas. I would say Memphis would have to be at the top of the non BCS candidates, if for no other reason than that wonderful Liberty Bowl…..cha ching. Thanks everyone for the help.

Not sure on this, but there is a chance that the Motor City Bowl would come if Toledo did. The MCB came close to selling out Ford Field this past year mainly do to UT fans(and UConn did have alot too but obviously not as many) and have always had a good amount of Toledo fans there. they know Toledo fans would flock to it on a regular occasion too. and it helps like GB9 said, Detroit is only 45 minutes away.
