If you believe that, I've got some beach front property you may be interested in for sale in West Virginia.

I believe it, but it was very usual circumstances that led to it. The Big 12 is the stronger conference for sure and in no danger long term in my opinion.

If BYU joins it will be because they could out a more favorable (from their perspective) TV contract with the Big East thanks to a new one starting soon. It's not that the Big East one will pay more than the Big 12 (it won't, at least not long term), but BYU very much sees its fanbase as national and they don't want to be limited to regional Fox Sports Net for a lot of their games. If it's that big a deal to BYU, the Big East (with its new contract being negotiated) is in a good spot to make sure they end up with a lot of Thursday/Friday games in order that are broadcast nationally and maybe get one game on BYUtv still.

For Air Force, it's a matter of competitiveness. They'll probably rarely be a serious threat in the Big East, but they never would have been ever in the Big 12 with Texas and Oklahoma. There is also the nice fact, that Navy could become a conference game.

Air Force AD was on record and said he turned down the B12. What more proof do you need? This is not something out of a blog or guy posting something on this board.

There are many reasons why people don't want to go to the B12. For one, some schools aren't looking forward to be Whorn's 9th biatch. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Not if the new BE sign up with NBC/COMCAST. I could see plenty of games going national via this route.

RE: Salt Lake Trib: BYU on verge of joining BE
I think BYU overplayed their hand with the Big-12. Made too many demands. Now they're scrambling to not get left out of super-conferences.

I doubt that anyone in Provo actually thinks that joining a more geographically incongruous, less stable, and less lucrative conference with fewer marquee teams is a win for BYU.

Discussing why the new Big East is a better option for BYU than the Big-12 is like discussing why the Big East is better off without Pitt, Syracuse, and West Virginia...

Provo • Brigham Young University is on the verge of joining the Big East Conference as a football-only member — perhaps within the next day or two — The Salt Lake Tribune has learned.

A source familiar with the negotiations confirmed Tuesday morning that the conference and school could announce before the end of the week that BYU will be part of a proposed western division that also includes Boise State, Southern Methodist, Houston and, possibly, Air Force.

Bad link

It works for me in IE, but not FireFox. I assume it has something to do with the file being .html.csp.

Can't play more national then joining the Big East..so it works out great for BYU...

They will be playing in 5 time zone if you count Hawaii for the next 10 years..

Plus playing in many big cities..

Houston
Dallas
New Jersey
Tampa Bay
Orlando
Hartford

Just to name some.. what more can they asked?

RE: Salt Lake Trib: BYU on verge of joining BE
Little to lose for BYU. The worst that could happen to them is that they'll go independent again if the Big East collapses down the road. Their main risk is giving up their current ESPN deal, but that could be resurrected. TV contracts can be had by a number of schools (as shown by Army and Navy), but this might be BYU's last chance for AQ access.

Now, let's be clear that BYU would rather have Thursday and Friday night games on ESPN than a full slate of Saturday games on Comcast. In fact, getting away from Comcast was the #1 reason why they left the MWC. The relationship between BYU and Comcast is pretty toxic. As a result, take it as a very strong sign that the Big East will re-up with ESPN if BYU joins. Every BYU person I've talked to has made it clear that Comcast is literally a deal breaker for their administration.

Yep. I don't know where EERSFAN has been all summer, but AFA went public with the reasons why they turned down the B12.

So the Big East is going to get two teams that the Big XII wanted? Interesting. If Pitt, Cuse, and WVU had not panicked, the Big East could have been a very powerful conference. Oh well....

More on BYU.

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/70019....html?pg=1

"At the end of the day, the Big East has done everything to accommodate whatever it is that BYU wanted," Williams added. "But it's really going to be up to the (BYU's) Board of Trustees as to whether or not that's what they want. No matter how well you charm them, or how well you give them whatever they want, it really comes down to whether or not the Board of Trustees feels this is in the best long-term interest of the university. My understanding is that BYU is willing to accept an invitation. It was told to me that if it were up to (athletic director Tom Holmoe) and (President Cecil O. Samuelson), they would be in. But it's not. It really is up to whether the Board of Trustees give them the okay."

Sorry but a conference that is so desperate they could be willing to do anything for BYU and being more competitive for a team like AF does not make you sound like a great conference. Seriously one is "the other conference is too hard"!

That's what we heard about BYU and the Big 12, that Holmoe and Samuelson presented a proposal and recommended that BYU accept, but they didn't.

To be fair, if reporters had to name their sources when dealing with private negotiations, either (1) they wouldn't be sources anymore or (2) there would be nothing to write about. This applies to all types of news whether it's sports, business or politics. If we want inside information that isn't authorized to get out to the public, it comes with the territory. No source is going to let himself/herself be named in an ongoing negotiation.

BYU did not turn down the Big12....Big12 turned them down because of their tv contract.

Air Force turned Big12 down because they did not feel thay they could compete

I seriously doubt that BYU will ever end up in the BE.. They want to be in the Notre Dame Conference... or they are still negotiating with the Big XII still and trying to use the BE for leverage... just never know.01-wingedeagle

This. Dismissing a journalist because they don't name their sources is beyond ridiculous...it's how they get information. If they're frequently incorrect, then dismiss them. If they're frequently right, credit them.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the source familiar with UCF's dealings with the Big East was either Iliana Limón or her source.
