RE: The movie thread
Matrix I-III + Animatrix /dvd

I Pretty good.

II I liked it but I still had some issues with it.

III Didn't like it mainly for how they resolved the story of it all.

Animatrix: overall all the episodes were great. I do think the origin story of the Matrix they show here, if it is correct, contradicts some of the discussions on Zion and the matrix in the movies once they get to II and III.

Mortal Kombat / BR
--FWIW, its a pretty decent martial arts movie. Had some pretty decent casting. You know the theme song is epic. the BR has some cool special features.

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation / BR
--They changed the cast up quite a bit for some of the main characters. The whole movie felt like the production values were severely cheapened from the first one.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes / BR
--One of my top movies of 2011. Liked it better than the Mark Wahlberg Apes update 10 years earlier (?). The story of helping you parents dementia kind of hit home. Has some really cool special features on the apes shown in the movie.

Contraband / theatre
--Pretty good movie. I felt like this was Wahlberg's "The Town" / "The Departed" answer to Affleck and Damon. Basically he is a former smuggler who has to get back in the game to help out his wife's brother who is trying to get into the same business. I liked the dynamic of how many people you need to have friends with on a ship to make the smuggling of goods work.

RE: The movie thread
I didn't particularly care for the Matrix series. I thought it was poorly written, and lived vicariously thought its special effects...

The only reasons the other movies were made is because Hollywood has no writers these days, and Hollywood execs are afraid to do anything for fear of it not being popular. So they take whatever the popular fad, game, show, or whatever, that somebody else has created, and cheapen it for the masses, hoping to make a buck off someone's else's sweat and labor. If that doesn't work, they gift wrap some old successful film as a remake, or some variation of the same theme...

What else is new?

RE: The movie thread
i enjoyed the first matrix, that was about it. i actually forget what happened it the second two.

a weekend getaway in the hills of north carolina with the lady. we picked up midnight in paris and our idiot brother.

both were lukewarm. great ideas that didn't fully deliver. we had our hearts set on paris. it was in our local art house theater for quite some time, but we never managed to see it. it's a woody allen flick about a struggling writer who wanders around the streets of paris at midnight. he gets picked up in a vintage car and is transported to 1920's paris with the likes of hemmingway, picasso, dali, fitzgerald. he pines for this era. i liked the story, but owen wilson just was miserable for this part. thought the portrayals of the aforementioned artists (without knowing what they were really like, but i'll trust woody allen) were pretty amazing. adrien brody killed it with his dali.

brother was ok. this was labeled as a comedy, but i don't find newer "comedies" funny. but i still think they can be ok movies. this was one of those. i wished the opening sequence of paul rudd's character selling grass to a uniformed police officer could have taken prior to his interactions with more farmer's market patrons. i've never seen portlandia, but that seems up their ally.

in short, i recommend both.

On a Bruce Lee kick: / dvd

Enter The Dragon
--still epic!

Game of Death
--heh.... the cover up for not using the REAL Bruce Lee in some regards is kind of funny.

Fists of Fury
--pretty good action.

The Big Boss
--OK.

The Crying Game / NF Stream
--INTERESTING movie. After watching for the second time some things stood out more( NO pun intended). Forest Whitaker pulled off a decent accent. I wonder if the IRA guy "got picked" cause Forest thought he was "down."

Labyrinth / NF Stream
--David Bowie, Puppets from Jim Henson... IMO the movies sucked though.

The Expendables / BR
--One of the most bad ass action movies of all time IMO.

Chinatown / The Two Jakes /dvd
--I loved Jack Nicholson's character in both. I think they did a good job of tying together the two. I am not 100% sure if the movies were based on real dealings in California in dealing with the water distribution but it wouldn't surprise me.

Supposed to be loosely based on reality but the stories and rumors you get from the oldtimers makes me think it's not that far off. No doubt the process of gaining much of those water rights was very shady.

Oh, and great movie! Saw it most recently at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest / NF Stream
--I kind of get the insane helping the insane angle. I kind of get a a guy "possibly" faking being insane to get out of some trouble. While the movie had some decent acting I couldn't get into it.

Well, in the two Jakes they get into the Oil rights, subdivision development , and a few more angles. It was almost like after Mulwray's death that some of the other interests in the are came into play.... like her death was closer to the water angle but the motivations of others were based on oil, land, and water interests.

I liked The Two Jakes. Harvey Keitel was the perfect foil for Nicholson...

Yeah, I assume that with The Two Jakes they took a lot more liberties.

Saw Chronicle last night and thought it was pretty good. It was a little short though, under 90 mins if I remember correctly.

Brooklyn's Finest / BR
--Great drama IMO. Love the intertwined cop stories. Loved all three cops had some serious issues that make someone turn.... or turn around. Acting all the way around is solid. I like the overlapping at the end of each of their stories so to speak.

Watched the original version of The Ladykillers last night, with Alec Guiness. I love British comedy, and this one is one of the best...

RE: The movie thread
Saw Hugo this weekend. Absolutely gorgeous film. I now understand why so many critics have described the film as Scorsese's homage to film (and I wouldn't be surprised to find out that this lubricated the Oscar nomination process). I had no idea until I saw it that Ben Kingsley played a real person and that much of how the film portrayed that character was based on real events. I think this is a movie that will be enjoyed much more on a big 3-D screen than at home.

Scary Movie / NF Stream
--Pretty dead on spoof of Scary Movie.

Misery / NF Stream
--Interesting movie. Interesting take on the Super Fan and what they will do. Also, I found it interesting that just like The Shining it was winter and guy was a hotel writing again.

The Grey/ theater
--Pretty good survival thriller.

Can't say; I've never seen Tron. My mom and I were looking for something to watch, so we fired up Netflix and watched that. It didn't bore me, so it's got that going for it, which is nice.
