RE: The movie thread
Aquaman / theater
--IMO, this is the DC equivalent to Marvel's Black Panther movie. Origin story involving prodigal son candidates and also delving into the politics involved in the characters' living space. This and Wonder Woman nailed it as far as recent DC movies go, I wonder if they can get back to getting Batman, Superman, and Justice League as on track as these last two offerings. I gotta say that Momoa was right when he promised Star Wars like action under water. I thought the plot was pretty good and I liked the acting and the action scenes. They also did a really good job of doing the underwater scenes as truly underwater like the real Atlantians would be doing and it didn't feel as off as say the equivalent scenes out of Star Wars Episode 1. Overall, a really solid action thriller super hero movie that did a good job of giving origin story, giving the politics of the character's immediate circle, and delivering a solid plot.

Voltron S8/ NF
--digging it. over half way through.

Batman The Animated Series Disc 1 + Sub Zero / BR
--I have to say, the upgrade to BR for the old show has done wonders on picture quality from what was originally a afternoon tv show in the early 90s. That said, as much as the restoration and clean up is there, there is from time to time odd patches where it doesn't look restored properly like the rest of it. i'd still say the box set is worth it if you are a fan of the show.

Mission Impossible Fallout / BR
--Probably the best MI of the bunch so far and overall. IF they keep upping the quality I have no beef with them continuing.

Mortal Engines

Not as bad as the reviews suggest. It was OK, but the story was a dumb and a bit silly. Hugo Weaving is great as usual.

Aquaman

A really good origins story. Best thing I could say is that it could have been a Marvel movie (high praise). Jason Momoa is awesome and it's a visually stunning movie. The only things that bugged me were that the scene when they first enter Atlantis was way too Tron like. The "Ring of Fire" fight scene was rather childish and silly, other than that, definitely worth seeing on the big screen.

Bumblebee

Definitely the best of the Christmas blockbusters. Action, drama, story, effects, characters, MUSIC. It combined that with a true human element. Cena makes a great gruff solider, and Hailee Steinfeld is just a doll. It's one of those rare movies that both kids and adults will love.

RE: The movie thread
You guys actually liked Aquaman? My fiance and I saw it and considered walking out. The writing was god awful ("Ocean Master"!!!), some of the plot made no sense (how did his brother know that Wilem Dafoe had betrayed the Atlanteans?) and the black Manta character was incredibly stupid. How did this random guy become the greatest engineer in the world? He literally plugged an alien suit into a macbook and engineered a better suit that he learned to use in 10 minutes. The scene in Sicily with the cheesy music was groan inducing. And how did they evolve to the point where they could breathe under water? That would take millions of years. How old is that civilization? Do flares work underwater?

I have so many questions. Yes, the visuals were really nice, but after awhile they tended to blend together. This was nowhere near the quality of Wonder Woman.

Also, I haven't seen any posts about one of the best comic book movies of the year: Spiderman: into the spiderverse. It was fantastic, with cool visuals, great voice acting, some touching relationship building and good character development. I'm looking forward to seeing it again.

You are absolutely right!

Spiderman was fantastic. Definitely a must see for action/comic genre.

I liked Aquaman because it was cheesy fun. Aquaman = Sponge Bob, mindless entertainment.

Overall, this is how I'd rate the seasons (Thanksgiving till now) movies.

1) Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse

2) Bumblebee

3) Creed II

4) Fantastic Beasts

5) Aquaman

6) Mortal Engines

Oof, man we thought Fantastic Beasts was the worst movie we've seen since getting in to movie subscriptions (like a year and a half). It made no sense and totally retconned some major Harry Potter book moments

The Girl in the Spider's Web / BR
*4th story in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series. I liked it.

Aliens DC / BR
--still one of the most bad ass action movies of all time.

Batman and Robin / BR
--still as crappy of a movie as ever....

Batman ... animated movie... / NF
--had Batman, Red Robin, Nightwing, and The Flash going after the animal inspired villians from the DC universe with ... Penguin, Cheetah, and Killer Croc ... not bad... not bad at all.

Lego Black Panther .... / NF
--Kind of cool to see them do the lego aesthetic to the Black Panther... not a bad 22m animated feature.

Lego Avengers... / NF
--Not bad... but not great... cool lego renditions of the characters.

Doctor Strange (animated) / NF
--kind of told the origin story of Doctor Strange in some ways. Not bad.

Deadpool 2 / BR
--Almost as good as the first one, the humor just didn't feel as fresh as it did in the first one but it was still on par.

The Man with the Iron Fists / BR
--Pretty solid directorial debut from Rza, and not a bad martial arts movie. the 2nd one was better in a lot of ways but less martial arts crazy.

The Patriot / dvd
--hadn't watched in a long time, pretty good.

Punisher s1 / nf
--not quite as good as S1 but had a lot of interesting story elements.

Batman (60s tv show) s2 / br

Logan/ br
--a kick ass movie

Transformers the last knight / br
--man....what could haec been...

The predator / br
--got the 4pk br set for same price as movie itself! I liked it and lots of nuggets and odes to the prior movies in the series.

Mowgli/ NF
--Hmm, tough call, I loved the old Disney Jungle book. I even liked the live action one they did a few years ago. This one, was MUCH darker and in some ways was a better way to wrap up the "complete" tale of Mowgli. The only thing that bugged me was was teh CGI for the animals....in some ways, iut was just enough off.

The acting teacher at my high school appeared on the old Batman tv show as a backup actress. She had red hair, and I think she was one as a replacement for Cat Woman as a stand in for Julie Newmar who could not do her scenes in costume.

Alita: Battle Angel - Even though I didn't have a knowledge of the character's background, I saw James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez were involved so I decided to give it a go. Glad I did. It's unique, different, fun. The effects are amazing. The story and the characters are good enough to keep you involved. Definitely a see in the theater movie.

RE: The movie thread
Cold Pursuit - The best way I can describe this is "Fun Bad".... It's a total cookie cutter movie. Over the top baddie, the unassuming "good guy" who seeks vengeance yet is reluctant, the "wrong place, wrong time" victim. By all rights is should be horrible. Truth is it was pretty entertaining. Good way to kill 100 minutes. I'd wait for Netflix, though.....

RE: The movie thread
Alita: Battle Angel / theater
--Felt like a Ghost in the Shell/Blade Runner/Robocop had a baby. I liked it a lot but the end kind of ticked me off considering it all anyone talked about during the movie.

Captain Marvel/ theater
--I liked it. I didn't get the hate the movie got on the female empowerment angle as I felt most of the jokes, comments, and insinuations involving that didn't feel overly done and basically kind of fit into natural conversation. Lots of cool historical tidbits in the movie. The de-aged Sam Jackson was pretty cool to see too. The only thing I kind of found convoluted was her origin story with all the trappings involved in how she got to where she was. I'd rank it mid-tier of the MCU right now. The lowest movies in the MCU to me are still Iron Man 3, The Hulk, Thor, and GoG. I can take the heat because, yes, I do believe Thor 2 > Thor 1 and GoG 2 >> GoG 1.

************

Hard Target / dvd
--I love this Van Dame movie.

And, with Captain Marvel and Avengers End Game coming soon I revisited

Black Panther / BR
--Really solid movie IMO.

Captain America: Civil War / BR
--Really solid movie IMO. Still felt it was an Avengers movie but I can see it being a CA movie as it was more about him and Winter Soldier being best friends and what kind of rift that would cause amongst the Avengers.

Avengers: Infinity War/ BR
--a solid start. Thanos was just cool and bad ass. Also, the beginnings of getting over some of the conflicts that broke apart The Avengers from Civil War are starting to seep in.

Real talk, I might have to go back to the first Captain America film to answer that.

RE: The movie thread
Captain Marvel - OK, let's get this out of the way first. It wasn't nearly as good as the SJW's are making it out to be AND it wasn't nearly as bad as the "hater" crowd was claiming. To be fair, in order for me to review the movie, I have to break it up into thirds. The first third was boring, not very interesting, and I thought the humor was forced. The middle third was OK. It was starting to lay the ground work for a good finish, which it did. The final third was actually pretty good. Action, adventure, plot twists, etc. The only issue I had was I thought the CGI in the "space battle" were a bit on the cheesy side. Over all, being as honest as possible, I'd rate it as probably middle of the road Marvel movie. It doesn't come close to movies like Winter Soldier or GoG, but it isn't Thor: Dark World bad either.

BTW, I thought Wonder Woman was much better.....

Howard Stark found it in the ocean while looking for Cap in '45. SHIELD had it since then and it is implied Howard Stark and Anton Vanko used to to build the Arc Reactor prototype. So Lawson got it as part of the SHIELD project Pegasus (I guess I'm an MCU geek?) Of the supposed continuity issues in CM, the Tessaract is not one of them.

I haven't seen CM yet, so I won't comment on its quality.

Setup for Shield and how Fury got his eyepatch (LOL). Wasn't sure about Brie playing CM, but though she was good.
