I like him on a movie by movie basis.

Hey Pirate. I'm a fan of 300 and have it on Blu-ray. So, Rise of an Empire is on par with 300? I figured it would be worse. Does it pick up after where the first movie left off with the Persians invading more of Greece/Sparta?

I'm looking forward to seeing it as well. I really liked the last one, and like swoosh, I've heard this one is even better.

Its more of a side story about Persians going into Greece. They were doing some of the events covered in 300 while this story happened. The end end revolved around the what happened at the end of 300 plus what goes down in this movie in that basically, both united Greece to fight the Persians.

Glory / BR
--Just a great movie IMO.

Platoon / dvd
--Ehh....I just didn't get overly into it. It has a great all star cast, but the movie just didn't connect with me.

RE: The movie thread
I had a few days off so I gorged on some movies.. Bare with me:

Kick Ass- DVD/Netflix- I had to re-watch this movie. I'd watched it some time ago and had to refresh myself. As far as the plot and everything, it was kinda corny.. The only saving grace was the dialogue from Hit Girl..

Kick Ass 2- DVD/Netflix- To me it was better than the first one, but the whole thing with the villain kinda was corny. I understand that was part of the comic book and all. But it wasn't that bad.

And then there was my little marathon I began Friday night and wrapped it up Saturday evening in between cooking, yard work, and watching a few select TV Shows:

Rocky
Rocky II
Rocky III
Rocky IV
Rocky V
Rocky Balboa

These are all in my personal DVD collection. I can easily rank these since I've seen them numerous times except Rocky Balboa, believe it or not that was my second viewing of the movie. My ranks go Rocky, Rocky II, Rocky IV, Rocky III, Rocky Balboa, Rocky V. The entire Rocky series could've ended at 2 and would've been great. It nicely wrapped up the entire story and basically told the story of someone who never gave up. As much as I liked Rocky IV it wouldn't had happened without Rocky III. Although there were a few inconsistencies from II to V.

Rocky Jr was born in II. We're lead to believe it's 3 years later when III takes place. Ok Rocky Jr doesn't look that much older than 3 or 4, I can buy that. Rocky IV picks up right after the Clubber Lang fight and Jr now looks to be like 8. Rocky V picks up after IV and now he's like a pre-teen.

While watching it, I did notice some excellent lines I had forgotten and some things that I ended up googling.

There has been a total of 4 characters that have been in all 6 Rocky movies without a flashback to speak. Rocky, Paulie, Duke (He was Apollo's trainer and Rocky's trainer from III to Balboa), and one of the announcers.

After Rocky III, Paulie never says the line: "I don't sweat you" when he gets into a confrontation.

One of the funniest scenes for me came in III: Rocky is in the ring to go against Thunder Lips.. Rocky looks at Mickey and says: I wonder how much he eats. Mick replies: Probably about 202 lbs. At that moment the announcer says, And in this corner weighing in at 202 lbs, the Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World, Rocky Balboa.

Another came in IV: Very emotional scene as Rocky is walking out to fight Drago. And Paulie stops and tells him: I know sometimes I act stupid and I say stupid things, but you kept me around and other people would have said "drop that bum". You give me respect. You know it's kinda hard for me to say these kinda things, cuz it ain't my way, but if I could just unzip myself and step out and be someone else, I'd wanna be you. You're all heart, Rock.

After Rocky goes in the center of the ring and Drago tells him: I must break you.. Rocky goes back to his corner and Paulie says: Uh, Rock, you remember what I said about wantin' to be you? Rock says Yea.. Paulie replies: Forget it.

Finally..

We saw "Tammy" last night.

It wasn't bad, it had a bunch of funny parts.. But it was more chick flicky than anything else.

Did you ever notice how much more articulate and clean-cut the Rocky character was in Rocky III and IV from the rest of the series?

One of favorite exchanges in the movies took place right before his wedding in Rocky II:

Gazo (mobster Rocky used to work for): How's about investing in condominiums? It's safe.
Rocky: Condominiums?
Gazo: Yeah condominiums.
Rocky: I never use 'em.

I think the fight with the Russian damn near finished the job that Apollo started.

Many years from now, when I have kids and they are in their teens, I'm going to make them sit through the first 4 to show them what happens when you don't give up.

The wife and I went to see Jersey Boys, about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. I liked it, since it took me back quite a few years. Clint Eastwood did another great job as a director.

I haven't gone through the series in a while but overall from I through Rocky Balboa it was a nice story arc. 5 is still the worst in the series though and not for the plot points or the commentary on money in boxing but for the acting.

To the points on the Russian finishing the job... I want to say that either at the end of 4 or the beginning of 5 they go over that all the head trauma he received, with possibly Ivan Drago's punches enhancing upon what Apollo and Clubber did was going to :kill him." I think the deal was he was retiring to slow down and heal himself up while caring for his family--Tommy Gun was merely an attempt at him to be a coach like Mick was to him.

That said, Rocky might have had a punchers chance against Apollo but no way he should have beat Clubber...Mr. T was way to cut to lose to Rocky. Ivan Drago, was almost the equivalent of Bruce Lee fighting Kareem in Enter the Dragon. I think he was fit enough to last but all those punches to the head was kind of overboard.

He didn't lose it all until V.. So I-IV would be a great example. I mean for the first 2 anyway. You can look at 3 as a way of saying when it all goes to hell, to get back up and go again.. And IV is about beating the odds no matter how much they're stacked against you.

However, what's funny and I'm catching this as I'm older. Part IV is all about the use of steroids and such that Drago is using.. But in real life Sylvester Stallone was juicing. Great stuff.

I recently watched all the Rocky's as well.

Well if you'll remember in Rocky III, Mick tells Rocky the worst thing happened to him 3 years prior to taking the fight with Clubber Lang, he became civilized. He also told him that the beating he took from Apollo should have killed him.

I think the fight with the Russian damn near finished the job that Apollo started.

Many years from now, when I have kids and they are in their teens, I'm going to make them sit through the first 4 to show them what happens when you don't give up.

That you should train hard, win it all, and then have it all come apart to your hard headedness?

Apollo's character was supposed to be the equivalent of Mohammed Ali. There is even the subtle joke before the fight where Joe Frazier enters the ring and talks to Apollo and Rocky quips "They must be friends". Carl Weathers was not the first choice to play Apollo. They were originally set to cast boxer Kenny Norton for the role but it was decided the physical contrast would it all too unbelievable.

Agree with you Rocky would not be able to beat Clubber Lang. Clubber was too muscular, too quick and much younger.

I agree with him not being able to beat Clubber. The character was probably in his 20s while Rocky was 34 I believe.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, HBO/GO

Decent movie. Not great, not bad. It is a stretch but the tie in with the civil war was clever and there are a couple of clever plot twists. Like most movies, I would hate to say I paid theater prices to see it but on HBO it was decent.

I hate to be that guy, but the book is better in all ways.
