Who sent a defensive end to the NFL in the 1st round? Oh yeah, we did.

Anybody know what Riley O'Toole said about his junior day visit. How many of the kids in for jr. days did we offer?

Wondering if the Parzych kid from Minooka listed on one of the posted replies is related to the basketball player that was tough SOB from I believe Lockport in late 70's early 80's?

I was surprised that he was at one of our junior days. He is going to be the highest rated QB in Illinois. I hope he is serious but I think BCS is in his future.

The Illini are turning the heat up with early offers. This may not matter when we beat them in September and Zook loses his job though. We'll see.

Rabid, It is not just Illinois with their 75 early offers, but Toledo with 45 , Ball St., 28, CMU, 19, BG 22 etc. At our Junior days we gave out a grand total of 2 offers. I heard a lot of kids were disappointed and have already recieved offers from other MAC schools. I expect that we will again lose plenty of these kids to these and other schools. Our failure to recognize the changing game of early offers will crush us in recruiting next year IMO. CFN had us dead last in the MAC recruiting this past year, although I do not agree. I think our recruiting strategy is outdated in regard to early offers.

We learned this year that a verbal commitment isn't worth a damn thing unless you sign in February. And not that we are a Big Ten school but I do think there is some cache about giving late offers. Some of our biggest recruits were guys that we never heard about until late in the year. With that said, I think recruiting must be like trying to pick up a girl...u gotta tease them and lead them on for a bit before u let them know you like them.

Maybe we should start handing out offers to 8th graders to make sure they have them as early as possible.
Let the coachs do their jobs. Things will work out. Stay positive.
How can a player feel confident the situation is correct when a team hands out 75 or 40 offers and only has 20 scholarships available. It's also dumb in my opinion to hand out way more offeres then you have spaces. What if you get all DBs committing and no offensive players and then have to pull more offers. You lose all crediablity at that point.

Your last paragraph...there is a pecking order. Defensive back #1 they may take a commitment from, defensive back #8 they may not at that time. I've never seen a school end up with more players at a position in a class than they wanted.
Also, many of those "offers" that are out there this early are verbal and never turn into official written offers. Florida offers well over 100 players (they "offered" 136 kids last class), many in-state, then pick the kids they want. They tell the kids that want to commit but Florida takes a pass on that they never had an official offer, even though the kid may have thought he had a Florida offer all along.
It's all a game and coaches take different approaches to it, but they know what they're doing. There's a lot that goes on behind the scenes as well, where a kid may have an offer but realize that he may be a backup plan at School A but not School B, etc.

In the MAC you'll get better players late than early. If a really good player commits to a MAC team early he'll get picked off by a BCS school later in the process. See Osei, Miles and Williams, Armand for two great examples. I believe this coaching staff is going about it the right way by keeping some schollys open so they can get guys who've fallen through the cracks. CFN thinks our 2010 class is worst in the MAC? That's a hoot. It looks like a terrific class to me and I guess we'll find out between the lines.

UIHuskie, I see you have your 1st commit: Hunter Wells Canton, Ill. 6'6" 280lbs. OL. He had listed NIU and ILL. ST. as his other interests.

Yeah, a small-school kid from Central Illinois that grew up wanting to play at UI. He has the size but other than that I honestly don't know much about him. Linemen are a total crapshoot.

+1 hit the nail square on the head. Don't know why some people here don't understand this logic.
