Good morning Catamount Fans! It's a beautiful day in the 'WHEE and a great day to talk Catamount football. With Signing day fast approaching, I wanted to bring you up-to-date on the latest in WCU football recruiting and give you an inside track into where our guys may be coming from. First, check out the following websites to see info on our future Catamounts. While Div. I-A schools have most of the publicity on the web, WCU and other SOCON schools are getting their fair share of highlights. Click on the following:
____________________________________________________________

For the latest and greatest about the North Carolina recruiting wars, click on <a href='http://www.nchsfootball.com/players/recruiting/class.asp' target='_blank'>http://www.nchsfootball.com/players/recrui...iting/class.asp</a> to see how WCU compares with other schools in the region.

Also click on <a href='http://www.nchsfootball.com/Players/Recruiting/' target='_blank'>http://www.nchsfootball.com/Players/Recruiting/</a> to compare NC schools only.
One quick note, since these sites were updated, WCU has received verbal commitments from Michael Hines of Asheville and Chris Kirkland of Cherokee.

To find out who the best recruits are in the nation, be sure to tackle
<a href='http://scout.theinsiders.com/a.z?s=5&p=9&c=4' target='_blank'>http://scout.theinsiders.com/a.z?s=5&p=9&c=4</a>. This site tells all about the top 200 prep players in the nation and where they will be going this fall!

Also, make sure you check out Felipe Foster (DT) who is ranked 88th in the nation. My sources confirm that he is deciding between WCU and Ohio University as to which school he will play for. He is 75% sure that he wants to come to WCU!

____________________________________________________________

To see the latest and greatest about SC prospects, be sure to hit
<a href='http://scout.theinsiders.com/a.z?s=232&p=9&c=4' target='_blank'>http://scout.theinsiders.com/a.z?s=232&p=9&c=4</a>. I must admit that SC is looking pretty meager this year. Not a whole lot to choose from. But it's all good, GA is going to be gold for WCU this year!!!

Speaking of Georgia, check out
<a href='http://scout.theinsiders.com/a.z?s=37&p=9&c=4' target='_blank'>http://scout.theinsiders.com/a.z?s=37&p=9&c=4</a>
to find out which players are going to be heading to Cullowhee...and all the other programs in the nation.

Be sure to visit Kenyari Addison (WR), Matt Rich (QB ranked 71st in nation), Philip Young, Felipe Foster, Nick Miller, Jermel Wood, and Mike Malone's pages!!!

Felipe Foster's page can be viewed at <a href='http://scout.theinsiders.com/a.z?s=37&p=8&c=1&nid=270255' target='_blank'>http://scout.theinsiders.com/a.z?s=37&p=8&...&c=1&nid=270255</a>
Matt Rich's page can be viewed at <a href='http://scout.theinsiders.com/a.z?s=37&p=8&c=1&nid=271041' target='_blank'>http://scout.theinsiders.com/a.z?s=37&p=8&...&c=1&nid=271041</a>

Alright, now the time that you've been waiting for. Who has verbally committed to WCU this year???

Most of you know about the WNC foursome consisting of:

Shamar Allen (TE) - Reynolds HS
Josh Durm (RB) - Franklin HS
Michael Hines (WR) - Asheville HS
John Martin (DT) - Cherokee HS (John was recruited by both Tennessee and Clemson)

Also included in the WNC group is:
Chris Kirkland (QB) - Cherokee HS

Recently added as of yesterday was Roberson HS standout and Shrine Bowl participant,
Ryan Nesby (SS)

Other verbal's have come from the great state of GA.
These include:

Philip Young (DT) - Gainesville HS
Mike Malone (RB) - Gainesville HS
Nick Miller (WR) - Banneker HS
Kenyari Addison (WR/CB) - Jonesboro HS

On the bubble, WCU is on the minds of several GA prospects. Reports have WCU in the running with:

Felipe Foster (DT ranked 88th in nation) - Clark Central HS
Matt Rich (QB ranked 71st in nation) - South Forsyth HS
Carlton Bailey (CB ranked 91st in nation) - Jonesboro HS <a href='http://scout.theinsiders.com/a.z?s=37&p=8&c=1&nid=269949' target='_blank'>http://scout.theinsiders.com/a.z?s=37&p=8&...&c=1&nid=269949</a>
Jermel Wood (CB) - North Springs HS
Cameron Nelson (not much known about him at this time other than he visited WCU two weeks ago)

WCU has 20 scholarships for Fall 2003 and at least 10 have been accepted by verbal commitment. The WCU coaching staff is so confident in the prospects that we have been recruiting, that they cancelled the last two recruiting weekends on campus. To hear more on the buzz at WCU, visit the Catamount Pride forum at <a href='http://forums.delphiforums.com/catamountpride/' target='_blank'>http://forums.delphiforums.com/catamountpride/</a>.
With signing day less than a week away, we will continue to have our fingers crossed that WCU will score some of the best talent in high school football. I know for a fact, courtesy of Coach Kris Reis (Recruiting Coordinator at WCU), that this will be the best recruiting class WCU has seen in over 10 years. The Cats are right up there with the SOCON's best this year. All I can say is watch out GSU, ASU, and FU, the Catamounts are coming to life! We'll see you on the gridiron!

The only Carolina, is WESTERN CAROLINA!!!

Go CAT'S!!!

Gaffney, SC HS ILB Shelton Gaffney (6-1, 220) has verbally committed to WCU, picking us over The Citadel, and plans to sign his letter of intent on Wednesday morning. 11 verbals in what, roughly 2 weeks? Let's get them all on Wednesday! GO CATS!! 04-cheers

Russell Hemby, quarterback from Orangeburg-Wilkinson (SC) HS, has verbally committed to the Cats as well. This school has been mostly Clemson territory the last few years, with both Woodrow Dantzler and Jackie Robinson calling Clemson home. Good land Coach Briggs! GO CATS!! 04-cheers (chose WCU over Citadel, and SC State. Clemson and ECU had been schools of interest as well.)

All coaches for both Football and Soccer are in a dead period until Friday. This means that they aren't allowed to talk with any students until after signing day. The true test will now begin! 20 scholarships are up for grabs. Scuttlebutt has it that we have verbal committments for at least 16, if not all 20. As the countdown gets closer, my stress level gets higher. Man, I can't wait til Wednesday.

The only Carolina, is WESTERN CAROLINA!

GO CAT's!
