The article said parents were upset because Arabic is so intertwined with Islam that it couldn't be helped. I think it can and this shouldn't be an issue.
Those parents are ignorant, plain and simple.
I would agree but I don't see the point of offering such an inflammatory subject. Whats the point? Will they ever USE Arabic? Unlikely. Why not teach Spanish, Italian, German, Chinese or take your pick. Seems like a dumb move to me.
Why not offer something just because a few ignorant people might be offended? Heck, I'd encourage my daughter and son to learn arabic. Like another poster said, being fluent in arabic basically guarantees a high paying job these days. I wouldn't force the issue, but I'd highly encourage learning the language. Same with mandarin.
Don't misunderstand I don't have a problem with it but it seems like sometimes this stuff is done for press and not for education. I think Hindi would be a better offering.
It only hits the press due to ignorant parents, at least in this case. This should have been a nonissue.

Also, is this Arabic course an elective? If so, no one is required to take it which makes those parents look even more dumb.

All high school students in Alabama are required to take a foreign language, but yeah, they still offer Spanish so I'm not sure what the issue is.
Oh, I do, it's idiots in Alabama who want to get their name in the paper.

I think it's just the idiot part, doubt they can read so getting there name in the paper does nothing for them.

No it wont. The French pretty much wall their immigrant population off in South African style homelands called Banliues.
