Man, are we getting ripped off.
Isn't there already enough garbage you can buy in the automobile market without adding more junk to an already overcrowded market?
Chinese made products = marginal at best
Chinese made products and quality do not fit in the same sentence

Jim Farley drove a Xiaomi SU7 full time for 6 months, liked it, and basically issued a warning to other auto manufactures that the features and pricing of Chinese EVs were going to screw them over if they get over here,
Some of the Fathom economics probably came from that.

I’m just glad someone else is making the choice for us so we dont have to decide whether they are worth buying or not all our own.
That’s true freedom and market economics at work there.

Poor, skanky people buy the cheap, skanky Chinese cars because they can’t afford the good ones.
Europe gets the good brands. That’s why Chinese cars outsell Japanese cars in Europe.

Why are you assuming the people I'm talking about are "poor and skanky?" There's a word for that. For the record, the people I was with are all wealthy business owners and family members. Carry on..

If you want to trust a Chinese microchip not to disable your car at any moment, be my guest.
I have the same problem with American cars too, but I'll take the lesser of the two evils.

The CEO of ford drove one for 6 months and really liked the car. Like any auto industry the Chinese auto industry is going to have levels of quality.
A lot of this thread sounds like the people trying to talk crap about Japanese manufacturing in the 80s and we see how that turned out for them.

Why wouldn't you want the competition to come in and force lower prices across the industry?

because that competition drives their prices lower by using slave labor and manipulating their currency. They dont do it by innovating.
Let me know if you are ready to work as a slave in forced labor and we will be able to compete on labor pricing.

RE: We can’t have Chinese cars because of “security” reasons
Like all Chinese made products, it will have a major mechanical failure within the first year. My guess is the cars also do not pass American safety standards with either no air bags or non-compliant air bags that frag your face with metal like other cheaply made air bags did in the early 2000's. I suspect the cars also would likely fail American side impact and offset crush zone crash safety tests. That said, there is ABSOLUTELY room for a NEW foreign player in the US market. The current American auto market players have figured out they can make more money---despite selling fewer units---by virtually eliminating the economical budget tier----and just build nothing but high margin heavily optioned out near luxury SUV's and trucks. Right now the average cost of a new car in the US is over $55,000 and the average payment is over $700 (Id note over 20% of payments are over $1K). Large swaths of the American public can simply no longer afford a new car (even after spreading the payments over 7-8 years in an attempt to make it affordable).
In the 1970's and 80's the Japanese invaded the US market by offering an alternative to Detroit's "big iron" era. The Japanese were able to offer Americans economical cars that were fuel efficient, comfortable, and highly reliable---something Detroit seemed unable to do competently at the time. Then later, in the late 80's and 90's the Koreans started entering the market by carving out niche with cheap econo-cars that offered lots of features at a substantially lower price.
Right now, with auto makers concentrating only on the high end of the American auto market, the lower end of the US car market is completely wide open as the Koreans, Japanese, and American makers have all abandoned the more budget minded American auto shopper. Eventually, somebody is going to move into that space in volume because there is lots of money to be made there---and we have not seen this open of an opportunity for a new auto-maker since the days of the Chevy Vega and the Ford Pinto being the best options Detroit could offer Americans in the fuel efficient economy sector of the auto market.

I would kill for the Toyota Tacoma or Tundra of old. My first vehicle was a 2000s Toyota Tundra that my dumb self totaled in the ice a few years ago. I don't need a luxury vehicle that I'm scared to put to work, just something with a bed that I can throw stuff in and get from A to B. Wish anyone still made something like that and no not the Ford Maverick...

You are apparently not alone. Demand for used Tundras with the traditional V8 engine is such that they have virtually stopped depreciating---some sources even say they are increasing in value. My personal opinion is the first and second Gen V8 Tundras are fantastic trucks---and will probably still be running just fine when many of the new 2027 turbo-charged direct injection V6/V4 trucks are all used up taking up space in salvage yards.
