You missed The Bridge at Remagen, which was written by Ken Hechler, a WWII veteran who was there.

I did. It too is a great film. The ones I picked were ones that I believed would give insight into the different perspectives on the wars, or just great epic movies. There aren't many about the Korean conflict but the ones that were made all tend to be pretty good movies. A friend of the family was one of the survivors on Pork Chop Hill. He always said it was a good movie, but way to tame for the actual events. Another friend of the family fought in Sicily and again in the mountains in Italy, but for the SS, and on the opposite side from an uncle who also made the D day landing, 3rd wave, at Omaha.

The fellow that lived at the end of the road I grew up on was a Korean War vet. He had foot problems from the frostbite he received in the first winter of the Korean War in 1950. American troops were totally unprepared for the cold climate of the area. American soldiers had no gear to combat the extreme Siberian winter conditions at first. The weather came as a complete surprise to those in charge of our troops. It wasn't until the first winter was halfway over that our troops got the cold weather gear necessary for their survival. By then, many had died or been permanently crippled by frostbite. Big D was one of 'em.

Hell is for Heroes
Twelve O'Clock High
Attack!
Casablanca
Schindler's List
Combat! - a TV series

Would never have thought of Casablanca as a war movie even though it was.

Enjoyed Combat! the TV series even though it got overly dramatic at times.

I don't want to nitpick, but, the movie was titled We Were Soldiers. NOT the title you posted. That was the title of the book the movie was based on.

It was the opening line from which the title of the book and movie were taken. But I don't want to nitpick either.

What War Films Do You Consider A Must See?
Simple, the next one made.

Worst war movie ever wasn't really a war movie at all: Pearl Harbor. I felt dirty about giving those bastards even a penny of my money for that steaming pile of crap.

Ugh, yeah. What a disaster. I saw it for free and still felt cheated.

I made a vow after Pearl Harbor that if I ever meet Michael Bay, I'm knocking him out.

The Thin Red Line made me feel the same way about Terrence Mallick.

Saving Private Ryan for realism
Kelly's Heroes for entertainment
Mr. Robert's for acting. Cagney at his best

Patton
Gettysburg
Gods and Generals

Totally agree. Watch it every time it comes on. Drives the wife crazy.

The Pacific was pretty good, too.

Apocalypse Now
Technically a war movie--Hotel Rwanda

Most of mine have been mentioned but the list is MUST see so I'll keep it under 20!
In no order
Das Boot. See it in the original German
Downfall. Ditto about the German. Both movies make you feel like you are there
Conspiracy. Based on the actual notes of the meeting where the Final Solution was codified.
All's Quiet On the Western Front. Both the B and W and the one with John Boy
Bridge on the a River Kwai
The Beast. About a Russian tank crew in Afghanistan
A Bridge Too Far
The Deer Hunter
The Blue Max
The Patriot. Cheesy but about the only decent Revolutionary War movie

Not much out there Must See for Civil War or Korean War IMO. I also never miss
In Harms Way
The Big Red One

Has there ever been a movie with an all-star cast of this level? Some of the star appearances were brief but just to name a few:
Sean Connery
Ryan O'Neal
Gene Hackman
Michael Caine
Anthony Hopkins
James Caan
Maximilian Schell
Elliot Gould
Laurence Olivier
Robert Redford

I don't know if anyone has already mentioned but Judgment at Nuremberg is a must see. Spencer Tracy and Maximilian Schell were awesome in this recreation of the post WWII Nuremberg Trials. Schell won the Oscar for his role as German defense attorney Hans Rolfe.

Stripes.

I think The Longest Day beats them both as far as "all star casts go.

I don't know UofM_Tiger, it's pretty close but good call. Here's most of the top cast:
Eddie Albert
Richard Burton
Red Buttons
Sean Connery
Henry Fonda
Roddy McDowall
Robert Mitchum
George Segal
Rod Steiger
Robert Wagner
John Wayne

Midway is up there as well:
Charlton Heston
Henry Fonda
James Coburn
Glenn Ford
Hal Holbrook
Robert Mitchum
Cliff Robertson
Robert Wagner
Christopher George
Pat Morita
Dabney Coleman

Enemy at the Gates was damn good. Told a story most Americans never knew about.

Coming this fall there may be a classic war movie.

Fury looks awesome. I think it may be unique as a WW2 tank movie.
