WAC 2024 Basketball Preview - Outsider - 10-28-2024 08:23 AM ACU started off it's preseason with an exhibition against Texas A&MCC. We lost 100-86. We beat them at the end of last season in the CIT Tourney. It's a little frustrating to start like this. I know it's preseason and we are looking at all new rotations, but still. So is everyone else. Tanner said our guys were really really focused this year and ahead of where they were last year, just a couple of weeks ago. So, I was hoping for a better start. RE: WAC 2024 Basketball Preview - Spolovilo4EVER - 10-29-2024 03:11 AM ACU should have played Howard Payne as the exhibition and CC as the first game. CC was the 2nd best BB team in the SLC after McNeese, which is not saying much. 3rd now with SFA. They are about on par with RGV which means they would finish last in the WAC in any given year. Either they got some really good players this year, or ACU is not going to have a very good year. That one hurts, but atleast it was an exhibition so the loss does not count. Tarleton starts things off at SMU. They were really not that good last year, so I think we have a good shot. I know Freddie can ball, but unless we got 4 other good players in the portal we are in trouble too because we lost everyone who could play at this level. Their is no one left from last year that deserves a spot on the starting line up. Anxious to see how good ( or bad) we actually are this year. RE: WAC 2024 Basketball Preview - Spolovilo4EVER - 10-29-2024 10:04 AM If we only beat UT Tyler by 10 that is NOT a good sign. Neither is Freddie on a scooter! Hopefully he will be ready to go on Monday. Looks like even with Freddie, we may not be anywhere near as good as last year. Tempering expectations as we speak. RE: WAC 2024 Basketball Preview - TexanFan - 10-29-2024 10:34 AM FWIW, we were up 41-21 at half. Maybe we played lots of backups in the second. Lots of players on the end of the bench got the bulk of the minutes in the 2nd half. Up 20 at halftime and most of the starters were out of the game after the start of the 2nd half. All 3 guard positions in the 2nd half were held down by freshmen that I don't anticipate will see much playing time in the regular season. I definitely wouldn't play much into last night being an indicator for the rest of the season. So can I assume you were at the game last night? If yes, can you tell us who started? No box score posted. RE: WAC 2024 Basketball Preview - Oscar P - 10-29-2024 03:53 PM Tarleton looked good in the first half. The bench emptied in the second. We have 50 guards and 2 bigs. And bigs is relative. Tyler had a 6’ 11”, and a 7’ 1”. You kinda need bigs in the WAC. Tarleton had a charmed season last year. We have some great athletes this year. Only two or three guys from last year, so who knows. But we are small. Ultimately, you have to have those bigs to rebound and clog the middle. I guess we will see. Gillespie knows more than I do about basketball for sure. This is what he wants. It’s a whole new roster and I’m not a bball guy. Yes, I was there, but I’ve got nothing of substance to contribute. A kid from Alabama,a kid from Mississippi, and a kid from Lewisville maybe. That’s all I got.(10-29-2024 08:50 AM)Oscar P Wrote:(10-29-2024 03:11 AM)Spolovilo4EVER Wrote: ACU should have played Howard Payne as the exhibition and CC as the first game. RE: WAC 2024 Basketball Preview - TexanFan - 10-29-2024 07:58 PM Listened to the Gillespie radio show tonight and he said three starters are out for several weeks. Down to 8 scholarship players. RE: WAC 2024 Basketball Preview - FoUTASportscaster - 10-29-2024 08:43 PM Gentlemen, put zero stock in exhibition. In one of our worst years, we took the Sooners to the whistle. Coaches try different combos, schemes and players on both sides they wouldn't normally do as the season progresses and they figure out the team. I huge win or a close loss means nothing. [/b]Agree, ACU never seems to start very well. We have several new faces. I just expect more, even though I know Tanner is throwing around a bunch of different rotations to see what works and what doesn't. Everyone is this time of year. RE: WAC 2024 Basketball Preview - Spolovilo4EVER - 10-30-2024 02:01 AM By the end of November we should have a good idea of who is going to be good or not. I am sure GCU will be good, after that? 2-9 looks wide open and anyone can occupy any of those spots. With 3 starters out for our first so many games, I am not expecting any wins until we get them back. I'm pretty sure we beat the soonest that year RE: WAC 2024 Basketball Preview - wewererebels - 10-30-2024 01:03 PM (10-30-2024 08:27 AM)RT98 Wrote:(10-29-2024 08:43 PM)FoUTASportscaster Wrote: Gentlemen, put zero stock in exhibition. We did, 99-84, but it cost us an injured starter for the rest of the year, David Azore. From The Norman Transcript: "The Mavericks weren't a pushover, fresh off a scrimmage victory over TCU, which was picked ahead of OU in the Big 12 coaches poll and even made some media outlets' top 25, last week. They finished 27-9 and won the Sun Belt regular-season title last season. Still, giving up 99 points wasn't the idea." https://utamavs.com/news/2017/10/28/MBB_Mavericks_win_charity_scrimmage_at_Oklahoma |
