Quote:With 2023 ticking down, the nation is poised to finish the year with its biggest annual drop in homicides on record, according to preliminary data from law enforcement agencies both large and small.

The homicide rate in the United States is expected to plummet nearly 13% compared to 2022, meaning more than 2,000 fewer people were the victims of homicide this year, Jeff Asher, a national crime analyst, told ABC News.

The drop in homicides comes as more than three-quarters of Americans say there is more crime in the U.S. than a year ago and more than half of Americans say the same about crime in their local area, according to a Gallup poll released last month. Adding to that perception is the annual National Crime Victimization Survey published this month by the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics that found the number of violent crime victims nationwide climbed from 16.5 per 1,000 people in 2021 to 23.5 per 1,000 in 2022.

Cities say the 2023 drop in homicides and other violent crimes can be attributed to expanded efforts to prevent crime, including working with community volunteers, targeting gun possession in high-crime areas and placing officers on foot and bike patrols.

Yes because as we all know homicides are the only form of crime.

Violent crime has been trickling down since COVID, but petty crimes like robbery + carjackings have been skyrocketing in cities across the US.

Quote:Rents, average monthly temperatures, grocery prices—most things in American life seem to be rising these days.

But not everything. In 2023, murder rates in the United States dropped at an astonishing rate, probably among the highest on record. That’s according to data gathered by Jeff Asher, an independent criminologist, from cities with publicly available numbers. In the sample of 175 cities, murder is down by an average of almost 13 percent this year.

And it’s not just murder. FBI data for the third quarter show that every category of crime except for motor-vehicle theft is down, some of them sharply, year over year from 2022. (As for the car thefts, they seem—in one of the weirdest data flukes you’ll ever see—to have been driven almost entirely by TikTok videos showing the ease of breaking into certain Kias and Hyundais.) Two years ago, as worries about soaring crime resounded, I wrote that America was in the midst of a violence wave, not a crime wave, as property crime continued to sink even while violent crime rose. Now America seems to be experiencing a peace wave.

Funny how this happens now that we are up to 1/2 of states having constitutional carry.

Would be interesting to break out the states with the most oppressive CCW and handgun laws like Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Maryland etc and look at how those compare to the rest of the country.

Nobody is arguing that this is positive news, for sure. If you're using the COVID years as a benchmark, it's not really a "peace wave." It's reverting back to the mean as it typically always has been with Bush, Obama, and Trump.

I thought some people had already established that more guns mean more crime, more murders etc.

Guess this shoots a hole in that theory.

Read your thread title again.

"2006" So what the Democrats are doing in the cities, thinking they are being new & progressive, it's nothing that hasn't been done before

More people carrying guns reduces crime. Gosh, who would've ever thunk it?

My guess is the reduction may just be a natural decline to where we were prior to COVID. The US still saw more homicides in 2023 than in 2019.

Really good point

Hey that's actually correct.

Still a good thing though.

Your peers lathering themselves up over imaginary national concealed carry success should read a bit more though, but that's their problem

You would certainly understand imaginary.

Well of course there will be people that think higher carrying areas reduce crime. There are mixed results on this across the US anecdotally.

There are also people who will see the % drop in homicide and believe that premise that we are living in a peaceful time, when really we just came off the most violent years since the mid 90s.
