What Would a Pac 10 Contract Go For Now? - schmolik - 09-22-2023 08:31 AM

Let's assume the 2023 moves didn't happen but the 2022 UCLA/USC moves to the Big Ten did. We then see Colorado's huge Week 1-3 ratings.

Would the Pac 10 get more money than the Big 12 that four of them (including Colorado) left for? Would they get the same and the four schools could have stayed in a more geographically compact conference instead of being in a conference with schools in the Eastern Time Zone including West Virginia (Arizona State's AD is on record saying he didn't want to go to Morgantown).

If only Deion left for Colorado a year earlier or Colorado waited to leave for the Big 12. Washington State and Oregon State certainly would have been better off. California and Stanford would have been better off (more money, better geography). The 4-C likely would have been better off.

Now of course Deion could easily leave for the NFL or another school at the end of this year or next and maybe the media companies realize that but at least the bump as well as the buzz from all of the top Pac 12 schools at least makes the conference somewhat viable and gives them competitive offers.

Almost all the buzz around the Pac has to do with either the conference collapsing or the Prime effect neither of which would ultimately do much to add value to the overall media rights. With FOX having already decided they were done with the Pac after they got the LA schools moved into the B1G once ESPN walked away after the Pac's 50mil/year get lost counterproposal the conference was never going to survive beyond this final year.

Probably around $20M to $30M.

So in the end Wash, Ore, Col, Utah, Ariz, ASU got slightly better deals but Cal, Stan, Ore St, Wash St. got much worse deals.

I think its a sign that Wash and Ore would have needed a much bigger deal than $30M to stay because they had become convinced they needed to get into the Big Ten, sooner rather than later. I think only an offer over $40M would have made them stay.

Once Wash and Oregon were out, now the offer for the PAC was even lower, and the chain reaction was put into action.

Of course the mystery still is why did Colorado pull out officially before Wash and Oregon did. That's still not so clear to me. Maybe they just got tired of waiting for the $30M+ offer that never came.

I don't think it was a coincidence that the Big Ten didn't offer Oregon/Washington until Colorado officially signed with the Big 12. Oregon/Washington and Arizona/Arizona State/Utah were literally the same day and I'm not exactly sure who signed first but I had a feeling the Big 10 probably saw the writing on the wall. Supposedly the Big 10 didn't want blood on their hands to be the ones to kill off the Pac 12, they wanted the Big 12 to assist them. If the Big 10 really wanted Oregon/Washington, they would have taken them along with UCLA/USC (not to mention offered them full shares). I'm pretty sure if Colorado doesn't pull out, Oregon and Washington don't get accepted to the Big Ten.

If Kliavkoff was really serious about $50 million, then nothing was going to change. But I'd have to think that had there been no movement and the Pac 12 was still on the table there would be at least some more interest from FOX and ESPN (as well as Apple) now because of Deion and a 10 team Pac 10 with the possibility of Deion staying in Colorado vs. a 12 team Big 12 without Deion would be comparable in value. If no Pac teams move to the Big 12, ESPN still has a hole in late night coverage that the Pac 10 can fill.

Colorado didnt cause the collapse of the PAC. The lack of acceptable media deal was the main culprit. Any of the other schools were ready to bail at the 25m all streaming deal. Oregon and Washington werent signing that and neither were the rest of the 4C.

USCLA represented 40-50% of the media value of the PAC. Sanders was already HC at Col and tickets were already sold out for the season when all the media deals failed to meet expectations. So no, Sanders at Col would not make a bit of difference in getting the PAC more $ on the TV deal and the PAC would still have fallen apart, because the networks would still only offer $20m~ per.
