2023 Baseball Success - HardBall Fan - 06-02-2023 09:16 AM

As NCAA Tournament Regional play starts today, I just wanted to take a quick moment to congratulate the baseball team on this season's success. I could not be more excited about the new coaching staff and the trajectory of the program!

For those who do not follow baseball closely, the team finished with a 29-28 record this season. It was Memphis baseball's first winning season since 2017. Coach Jackson and his crew inherited a downtrodden program with bare cupboards and came in and immediately started turning around the culture and getting to work on building the program. If you don't follow baseball closely you may not realize what a success to go 29-28 this season happened to be. Two years ago, in 2021, the team finished 18-39.

In the pre-season, the American Conference coaches picked Memphis to finish dead last in the conference this season. The Tigers finished 5 out of 8 teams with a 10-14 conference record. Not stellar, sure, but again look at where the program was coming from. 2018 = dead last with a 5-19 record, for example. Memphis has been the AAC bottom feeder by and large in baseball for quite a while.

Now we're to the point where Coach Jackson and his staff are recruiting at a high level and the future is looking really bright. The ship is turning around. There were several highlights this baseball season and having a winning record is merely a cherry on top that shows the direction the program is moving in.

So thank you to all the coaches and players for an inspired season and UM fans start watching because good things are happening in this program and in a few years I think something special is going to be taking place.

I said from the beginning the short time coach had to build his team would show improvement this year and take a big jump next year.

I loved watching them play this year.

They were much improved. Coach Jackson instilled a little pride in the program, which had been sorely lacking.

Got to love numbers when you're talking about the sport of baseball.

2023 featured a 3 win improvement in the season, a 1 win improvement in conference play from the 2022 season (still finished under .500), they also featured a 5 win improvement at home. They did go under .500 on the road, which in 2022 they were actually above .500 games away from Memphis.
So, conference games will be the measuring stick entering 2024.

Team stats (Note, they played two more games in 2023 than they did in 2022)
Only one hitter hit over .300, that's it.
Team Average: 2022 (.271) in 2023 (.256)
They scored 28 fewer runs than they did in 2022.
25 fewer hits in 2023 than they did in 2022
21 fewer doubles this year
12 more triples this year than they did 2022, a total of 18.
7 more home runs this year than they did in 2022.
They had close to 20+ more walks this year offensively
They did struck out 479 times this year. Last year's total was 381.
They did stole 44 more bags this year than last year.

Pitching:
ERA last year was 6.06, this year was 5.35 (27 fewer earned runs given up)
They allowed only four fewer hits (Again, they played two more games than last year).
47 fewer walks this year
Last year pitching BA was .273, this year was at .262
35 fewer wild pitches and hit batters

They also more errors defensively than they did last year.

Offensively, it seems like they're more into the power game than they were last year. Strikeout's are alarming though, especially from the role players. Pitching did great, especially with the walks/WP/HBP stat.

Watching the Auburn-Southern Miss NCAA game and just saw coach Schoenrock as Auburn pitching coach. Good for him. Sometimes a change of scenery is a good thing. Hopefully we’ll be watching us in this tournament soon.

Sucks, but not a surprise. Back when he was hired I remember reading stuff indicating he wanted the Missouri job back when he was an assistant there.

What a shocking turn of events. It’s incredibly disappointing. One step forward, two steps back

Or maybe the AD is just getting credit for a good hire that someone else engineered (Blair DeBord).

Until we get out of this G5 purgatory this is going to continue to happen.

Memphis’ baseball facilities are below most in our conference… too, there are sunbelt & CUSA programs with much nicer facilities. Memphis has largely ignored its baseball program for the past 20-30 years.

Kinda how it works, the big boss gets the credit or the blame.
