1- The next time Swaim is right will be one of the first times lol

2- Even if the PAC lost several schools the years remaining on the 70M each P5 gets from playoff money, additional march madness money, and other revenue streams likely make them able to piece together a rebuild IMO.

Yeah, I think for the schools that have legitimate B1G dreams, there is every reason in the world to body the blows for the next media contract cycle.

No reason to sign on for a 6-7 year Big 12 contract and then pay huge exit fees that makes the whole process a wash.

That assumes the B1G even comes calling and nobody else bolts. TBD

The B1G may not come calling this cycle. Some teams may bolt.

But fiscally speaking, it makes no sense to move from the PAC to the Big 12 for a $31M payday for five years, only to have pay back the equivalent of two years of distributions when the B1G comes calling. That move nets way less than just staying in the PAC, even on a really poor media deal. For schools like Oregon and Washington, which do have legitimate hopes for the B1G, making the move to the Big 12 for a short term payday just doesn't make cents.

Schools like Arizona which don't have that option probably should pull the trigger to move. The longer you can settle and build your brand in your new home, the better.

Colorado is somewhat of a black box. They could have, at least in their minds, a realistic hope for the B1G being an AAU institution in a new market with rivalries in the B1G footprint. They could also view themselves as hopelessly behind Oregon/Washington/Stanford/Notre Dame/ACC-whoever and decide to move on as they may be in the Big 12 for a longer term. Not sure what they believe.

I don't expect UO or UW to be a first mover.

CU probably understands their odds are long so they secure a better worst case scenario by moving and if they get the golden B1G ticket they end up effectively neutral.

CU waiting and possibly seeing the Zona duo go, then the deal gets slashed more, then the Big 12 stops at 2 new schools or possibly UW/UO follow reluctantly could be a worse worst case. No seat at the Big 12 and no B1G invite and an athletic dept with debt gets less payout. No assurances the Big 12 would go past 2 for them or past four for them unless the right partner was coming.

The schools have to repay back money to Comcast in the PAC 12 like Arizona and Colorado, and moving to another conference will not help them out at all.

How does any move by P12 school to the B12 change the $$$ for the B1G to add UO and UW? Didn't the study conclude the money to add wasn't worth it?

I’ve wondered the same thing. If Oregon and Washington were not worth it then then why would they be worth it now?

The only thing I can figure is that the B10 media deal has not been accurately reported and that they need those additional west coast games to give them a bump in pay, considering all of the travel some of the schools will have to endure.

That, or the B10 feels guilty and is willing to take a pay cut to feel better about themselves.

… or maybe Notre Dame is joining?

My hunch is that the Notre Dame is not joining any conference, any additional PAC schools join for a massively reduced share and that the B10 will act because they feel guilty about destroying the PAC.

'Feeling guilty' likely means, more precisely, feeling liable.

I know nothing at all. But, in a case where there are mass defections from the PAC, the Big 10 with Oregon and Washington could lay claim to the entire Rose Bowl. There is some value in that versus splitting it with another conference.

RE: Swaim: PAC TV Package At 20 Million - DavidSt - 05-26-2023 10:35 PM

Nobody is leaving the PAC 12. We were wrong about the Big 12, and they survived. For the PAC 12 to survive? They need to grab the 6 best schools out of the AAC and MWC.

I don't see any liability issue. USC, UCLA are joining at the end of their Pac 12 obligations. The ACC and B12 destroyed the old BE and there was no legal issues.

Good point because it's also the last opportunity for the PAC 12 members to use their get out of jail free card. They sign a GOR and they are locked up until termination. The world can completely change by then, but it has already for those not P2. If my math is correct $31M is greater than $20M and academic prestige can only sustain your athletic departments for so long. 05-stirthepot

Marchant's sources are ESPN. Apple looks to be the front runner to winning the media rights and they are negotiating with other linear media partners to satisfy the PACs desire for linear broadcasting. ESPN might want a few games each week because they are a sports network. But, they are having significant financial issues and I wonder if they can even honor the contracts they already have. And those contracts are backloaded.

Apple tends to be very secretive in their negotiations as well as deliberate. No way that Marchant knows what Apple may be offering.

Is the $35M a year net of the Comcast repayment?
