D2 Athletic Administrators: D1 Coaches Recruiting at Our Championships - TexasTerror - 05-22-2023 11:16 AM

Pair of Division II administrators calling out Division I coaches for recruiting at NCAA Division II golf events. New normal?

FSU people are complaining that Miami are offering loads of cash to their players and recruits as well. All of this cause an NIL nightmare running chaos in the Wild Wild West.

Hopefully we're doing that for players from far better programs than FSU

This could be my all time favorite Rivalry post.

LOL. Rules against recruiting are blatant restraint of trade. This is the new normal.

If I'm an NAIA school, I would set-up a tent on back 9

The concept of "Restraint of Trade" refers to practices or agreements that restrict competition or free trade. While college recruiting rules impose certain limitations and restrictions on the recruiting process, they are generally not considered restraints of trade in the legal sense.

College recruiting rules are primarily designed to maintain fairness, ensure a level playing field, and protect the interests of student-athletes. They are established by the NCAA, which is a private organization governing collegiate athletics, and are generally accepted as necessary for the proper functioning of college sports programs.

These rules aim to prevent unethical practices, such as unfair recruiting advantages, exploitation of student-athletes, or the exertion of undue influence. They also help maintain competitive balance among colleges and universities.

Courts have generally upheld the legitimacy of recruiting rules and recognized the unique nature of college sports, which involve educational institutions and the amateur status of student-athletes. While the rules may restrict certain activities or impose limitations on recruiting methods, they are typically viewed as reasonable and necessary for the overall integrity of college athletics

Source? I’d wager it was produced prior to the current environment. With athletes able to enter the portal and transfer with ease, any rule preventing a coach from pursuing them prior to entering the portal seems arbitrary. It’s only a matter of time before a coach sues to allow it and wins.

Golfers are permitted to enter the portal once the championship fields are announced. DII golf coaches might be unwilling to keep a player out of the championships. It might be impossible if someone qualifies as an individual.

So the DI coaches may not be tampering. A better DII player might enter the portal knowing that the championship is pretty close to an open tryout.

On the basketball or football team, a player might not be getting along with the coach or not getting playing time. If they enter the portal, the coach may cut them off. They could be a negative on the team, and it opens up a scholarship.

Most DII players in the portal do not transfer, and those that do end up at another DII school.

Dashboards for the portals.
