Kent State vs. SUNY @ Buffalo - fallsdog - 01-25-2023 09:04 AM

After a tough loss to Northern Illinois on Tuesday the Flashes are back at the MAC Center for a 9PM showdown against the Buffalo Bulls. The game will broadcast regionally on ESPNU.

While Tuesday's loss was a reminder that all glory is fleeting, hopefully it also was a bit of a gut check for KSU, who is now 16-4 overall and 6-1 in the MAC. The good news is the same as the bad news. The Bulls come to town having just laid to hammer to Ball State in Muncie. They are also in striking distance of KSU and Akron (who they will host next Tuesday).

The ride may have hit a bump last night. But at 16-4, 6-1 I have a funny feeling the wild ride is just starting.

GO FLASHES!

Oh, and these should cheer you up...

It won't be easy. Maybe none of the remaining games will be easy. Of course, that's true for all the other teams, too.

I'm hoping we get a solid turnout. Last Friday was a lot of fun. Hopefully people remember the value of entertainment. -Also hoping Athletics sends out a coupon code, so people will show up.

I'm going FWIW...

Kent 372

Congratulations to Sincere Carry on his honor at the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards last night. His journey has truly been his own. Well deserved young man...

Well. The Flashes are up 14 to begin the second half. Payton looks good tonight.

Go Flashes!

RE: Kent State vs. SUNY @ Buffalo - Muskrat - 01-27-2023 11:13 PM

While they were never really in jeopardy, it was still not a very good 2nd half.

RE: Kent State vs. SUNY @ Buffalo - bopol - 01-27-2023 11:32 PM

The 2nd half was fine. Buffalo made it closer because Kent was running down the clock so much in the last 4 minutes, which was the right move.

He looked great. Wonder how often he can duplicate that effort? Doesn't need to be the exact production, just be consistently contributing positively to the overall good of the team and we become that much more dangerous.

That said, going in, I thought UB was pretty good despite their record. I was wrong. They are awful. Hopefully we don't stub our toe on the return visit, but we shot horribly and still cruised.

RE: Kent State vs. SUNY @ Buffalo - fallsdog - 01-28-2023 07:29 AM

What stuck out to me was Payton’s activity. Like you said, he was contributing while he was on the floor. He has a presence and made some nice physical plays on both ends.

This team has some interesting lineup combinations to impose on or counter opponents. It will be interesting to see if a ninth rotation player emerges or if it changes game to game.

The Carry Payton pick and roll is becoming a force to be reckoned with. They're eventually going to start paying more attention to Payton on it then that will just mean life becomes easier for Carry. Earlier in the year I wondered how a guy with Payton's athletic ability wasn't getting at least a couple of dunks a game just by playing off our strong guard play. Really happy that they've figured it out.

If Payton and Thomas can become consistent producers on the baseline it will take a ton of pressure off of Carry and Jacobs, who are playing well to the naked eye, but are statistically in a season-long funk offensively.

VCD was strong/solid early in the season, but has regressed in MAC play, especially offensively.

RE: Kent State vs. SUNY @ Buffalo - bopol - 01-28-2023 09:46 AM

Payton is just a fabulous leaper and does a great job of timing his leap to block shots. He had 5 blocks last night. The pick and roll being a threat will give Carry more room to work. The only bad thing I can say about last night's game for Payton was the technical foul. It was totally unnecessary. Payton made a good play denying a dunk after a blown D by another player but was called for a foul which is fine (don't give away free points when you are up by double digits). Payton probably fouled him, so don't get upset and just force the Bulls player to make 2 from the line instead of giving up an easy two.

The team plays with so much emotion, I can't imagine what practices are like.

The Hornbeak-Payton combo at center really is coming together. A lot of quick D from the big men and they are both potential offensive forces. That is great to see as the grind of the season is beginning.

One thing that surprised me that Sullinger played so much in the second half and Santiago was on the bench (I think Santiago was on the bench from about 4 minutes in until about 14 minutes into the half). Santiago is a better defender, so I would think he would have been out there more to defend the double digit lead. I really like Sullinger though - I think he's going to be all-MAC before his time is up. He might be the best shooter on the team, has amazing body control and is very fast, but has the occasional defensive lapses and sometimes should pass on the shot early in the shot clock instead of launching away.

This is a beauty and beast team. An absolute joy to watch defensively. Payton’s inside D has helped a lot. Love this kids athleticism! Of course Jacobs hounds anyone and everyone.

Just plain ugly (most of the time) at the other end. Statistically this has to be one our worst shooting teams in many many years…40% overall and 20% from 3 last night. Sully and (sometimes) Gio are the only two that can consistently hit a triple. I have no idea what has happened to VCD’s jumper? He is barely drawing iron on most hoists. Ugh…Such a good stroke too.

They can beat most MAC teams playing this way but not gonna beat any really good teams if this poor shooting continues.

This is a good KSU team, but not one dominate within its own conference. Very few MAC teams ever are. It has as good a chance as any, and better than most, to win the regular season championship and/or conference tournament. "A beauty and beast team", indeed.

Unfortunately since Payton has come on it's seemed like Thomas has struggled. If we can get the two of them playing well together we will fully realize our potential I believe. Thomas can be effective in a pick and roll or a pick and pop. Both defend well. The two of them in there together does sacrifice a little bit of rebounding though. Especially since you can't really play Payton and Hornbeak together and Hornbeak, in my opinion, is our best rebounder.

RE: Kent State vs. SUNY @ Buffalo - bopol - 01-28-2023 12:30 PM

The thing with Carry that I've noticed in the two games I've seen is he can still make his own shot against tough defense. The reason Buffalo couldn't get back in the game was Carry took over the offense in the last 10 minutes. He seems to work in a space where he is looking for a pass in the first half, but in the second, he was looking to push into the paint and get a shot. Carry is good enough to make this team an elite team (get to the tournament and win a game)

RE: Kent State vs. SUNY @ Buffalo - Muskrat - 01-28-2023 02:37 PM

I think it's clear now that the biggest threat to the Flashes is Akron, as much as I dislike that fact. Akron, at home, is currently up 18 over Ohio with 3:06 to go in the 1st half.

RE: Kent State vs. SUNY @ Buffalo - fallsdog - 01-28-2023 02:42 PM

Man. Akron is taking OU to the woodshed.
