Simply can’t finish a game.

Might as well get used to it. This is the reality right now. Sad days for the program. I am not sure we get to double digits in the win column.

I have really tried to stay positive, but I'm close to joining you on the dark side.

Cold hard fact is we are in sole possession of last place in the next to the worst conference in D1. We are no better than the top half of D2 teams in America. That is the truth. Shame on the administration that let this happen.

RE: Same old, same old - mjs - 01-14-2023 08:48 PM

I keep thinking we'll turn thr corner at some point, but the street seems to be getting longer and longer.. Making the OVC tournament is far from a given, as we have already lost to the 2 DII move ups I had counted as automatic wins.

Finishing a game implies that the team had a lead to protect to finish with a win. I don’t recall much other than brief small leads in this game, and a whole lot of being behind.

We mostly played from behind, but we took a brief lead and it was tied at about the 4 minute mark. We obviously couldn’t finish the job. Interestingly we won a lot of close games the year Darrell won the Sun Belt. Same coach, different players. Sometimes you need to have a player who wants the ball late and “knows” he will score the clutch bucket. Markquis was one of those players. Don’t appear to have that now. A coach can only do so much, although I agree the buck stops with him.

RE: Same old, same old - UALR92 - 01-14-2023 10:06 PM

Well if I recall the facts DW ran Markquis off and he was the best player we have had in the program in quite some time. Case closed.

Bingo! And again, the problem isn’t with the players talent.

We will not make the tournament. Shame on the COACH for letting this happen. The COACH needs to adapt.

RE: Same old, same old - UALR92 - 01-14-2023 11:18 PM

The coach has shown over and over again that he refuses to adapt to anything. It is time for him to hit the bricks. He is a joke...

RE: Same old, same old - Karl B - 01-15-2023 10:17 AM

I didn’t mean to imply I do not blame the coach as well. I think the shame goes all the way up the ladder to who allowed this hire as well as the coach. You hit it on the head. He refuses to adapt to a changing game and changing players. He did not get a single player out of the portal this year and since Alfred Jordan left our recruiting has not been close to the same. We are to small inside to stop anyone that has a decent big, several years ago we had one of the tallest teams in D1, now we barely have anyone 6’8. He was going to get Arkansas kids and besides DJ Smith he hasn’t signed any Arkansas kids strait out of high school. He has quit on us and should be ashamed to cash his checks.

The person that forced this coach on the program was the naive Chancellor from Scotland, and he is already gone. And you make an excellent point about Alfred Jordan! Recruiting has not been the same since Walker ran him off, but still, I think there is enough talent here to compete in the OVC. Just not under the current leadership.

Don't know that Coach Jordan was "run off" since he left to take the head job at Clark Atlanta. I liked Coach Jordan but they are currently 4-12, so it's a little hard to argue he was the reason for our success. Currently Coach Bozeman, at UAPB, is the only D1 Coach in Arkansas whose team is not at or near the bottom of their respective leagues. I'd take him in a second, but don't know if he would see us as a move up. But he might be interested since he played here.

RE: Same old, same old - UALR92 - 01-15-2023 03:20 PM

We need a coach with some energy and someone who can relate to the players on their level more. The game has passed ole DW by and it is obvious. I think he is just riding out his salary and he is making pretty good money for being 56-78 since he came to town. Medicocrity at its finest, and he makes mediocrity look good.

Solo could relate. Whether he is the right guy is for someone else to decide.

Jordan did not leave here to take the Head Coaching job at Clark. He did not get the Clark job until this last fall, 2022. His next position after leaving Little Rock was as an Assistant Coach at Morehouse. Now I realize that being an Assistant in the Sun Belt is not like being an Assistant in the ACC or Big 10, but it is sure a big step up from being an Assistant in DII, in both level and pay. Jordan was not happy when he left here and posted on Twitter something to the effect that he felt stabbed in the back and betrayed.

He recruited both Nowell and Root for Little Rock, and you don’t think that didn’t have something to do with the one successful year Walker had here that you like to hang your hat on? So he’s 4-12 at Clark in his first year and that disqualifies him for you, but Walker is 5-14 (3-14 against DI) this year, in last place in the OVC, and finished last place in the SBC last year, but that does not disqualify him? Talk about a double standard!

Solomon Bozeman would be a good choice for our program to move on with if he was interested!

From what I recall reading on the internet, Jordan was supposed to coach Clark the year he left, but Clark canceled their season due to Covid. Wish we still had him here. But good Assistants are tough to keep.

I really don't know what we can do right now to "save" the program. I feel.like we have to do something "big". I saw were Derek was fired from his WNBA gig in 2022. Nothing would be "bigger" than bringing him back to coach. No idea if he would be the least bit interested. Maybe he would relish the opportunity to bring our program back from the abyss. Regardless he should be the first person we reach out to.

As much as I love Derek, I don’t think he would be a good fit. Not only leery of another NBA player and coach, but I don’t see him finding traveling by bus to Martin, TN, Morehead, KY, etc. very attractive after LA and NYC.

But there are lots of qualified college coaches out there and a very finite amount of Division I head jobs. Bozeman is not only a qualified college coach, but also has direct connections to the school. But he’s just one good choice, among many!
