Your Starting 2 Guard... - CUSA_NEWS - 12-14-2022 11:03 AM

Shot 30% from the field on 3/10 as a 5th yr senior.

Shot 12.5% on 1/8 on perimeter shots yet attempted no 3s.... The role of a team's 2 guard is shooting and scoring. Add only 2 rebounds total with the most turnovers in the game. Not quite filling the shooting void left by Lester and Tyler.

Franklin's play to close the game and him grabbing 6 rebounds hopefully helps him get in the groove soon because the team's going to need better production from the off guard spot vs real competition....

Time for Penny to remove his 2 sons from the starting lineup. We all know that won't happen, though, unfortunately. Earvin "Magic" Lomax was on full display last night, dribbling the ball into the abyss and shooting 18 foot turnaround jumpers, he can do no wrong to warrant being removed from the game.

Time is the only thing on our side and thankfully eligibility will be gone in a few months, which will benefit our program for the better, and stop this song & dance routine we've suffered through for five years.

Hahaha, remember when someone typed out..

11 points, 4 assists, 4 steals, 4 rebounds

as a brag to how well a player was playing...

that is too funny.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR RIGHT THERE BOYS!

and then only used 6 out of the 11 total games to get those astronomical numbers.

....and stood and watched Miller drain a cross-court 3-ball late despite his tough D rep.

It is unfortunate but I believe Penny becomes a much better coach when these players leave and no longer feels a loyalty to playing them.
Malco's minutes are a bout right as a limited role player
Alo has no business starting. He is a servicable backup PG but him playing almost 30 minutes/game is insanity. He should be about half that.
Jayden has no business playing significant minutes for a high level D1 much less starting. He should be 5-8 minutes/game instead of 18

McCadden, Kennedy and J Lawson should be getting the majority of those minutes and of course now Franklin.

The fact that it's against far inferior competition or the fact that it's 1 decent game every 1 out 10 games vs decent opponents.....

Think that's the nail on the head right there. I think Penny knows when he tells Alo and Jaden to do something they are going to listen and do it. I think that was more valuable with a team like last year's where there were too many chiefs. Feel like this team actually looks to Penny and listens for the most part so the drop in skill on the floor is no longer worth the increase in trust. JMO

itll be Kendric Damaria and KK eventually. Good to see we could have success with ALO and Kendric together but idk if thats the best pairing for 1/2.

CONFUSED_NEWS didn't see the Auburn game where Lomax had 13 points in 29 minutes and made 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch. Poor CONFUSED_NEWS, so miserable and depressed during the 6 games before last night. Happy now that he can bash Lomax and put out more of his political stupidities.

Very privileged that CONFUSED_NEWS. My posts that are identical to his, disappear.

I think that's probably right. I think first to go from the starters is Jayden for Damaria. Then you can play around with Lomax vs KK. KK has a higher ceiling - but he's done well coming off the bench.

For a good chunk of Kendric's minutes when Lomax is on the floor, Lomax gives KD some time off the ball. That's not acknowledged by the OP's calling of Lomax as a "2-guard". It's part of the strategy not to totally wear down KD.

If Damaria is comfortable running the point when KD needs some 2-guard time, then you make the move for Lomax to the bench, and KK to starter.

That's my point, when you try to pigeonhole it as an "East high" issue. The Lawsons are part of that category.

So you have Malco - who has been moved to the bench and fewer minutes. And J-Law - who is buried on the bench. Those are 2 exceptions to the "East high" theory. Point being, I don't think Penny is as simple-minded as you guys are trying to make him.

We've seen it basically with every coach we've ever had. Some players get a lot of rope (Andre Allen, Chris Crawford), while others get a short leash (Willie Kemp, Joe Jackson). Call it trust, loyalty, practice, whatever.

RE: Your Starting 2 Guard... - MemphisTigerPawr - 12-14-2022 06:26 PM

Penny wasnt going to change his starting lineup while on a win streak. ALo is fine, and I like him in games late with the lead. Dandridge has been playing great!

Basketball is a team game, Im sure Penny will make some changes, but ALo might continue to start, who knows. Looks like his best 5 with Dandridge out are

Davis
Williams
Franklin
Kennedy
A Big Guy or ALo

Some of you guys were saying Davis was over rated a few weeks ago.

Okay, I guess I need to be very specific for you on this one...

East High boys is not inclusive of any and all players who have ever played basketball for East High School but rather the group of players that Penny coach in high school and who immediately followed him to play at Memphis...

Chandler went to Oregon
J-Law I am not sure if was ever even coached by Penny at EH.
They are not really exceptions because they were not part of the East High class that immediately followed Penny to Memphis.

And the line about Malco getting fewer minutes just is not true. He played 17 minutes against Bama before going out with an injury. His season high in minutes before that were only 21 (game one and 19 against season Hall). Other than that he is typically right in the 17-18 minute window with the except of two games where he only played 8 and 5. His last 5 games are 5, 18, 17, 8 and 17.

I think Penny is actually a really good coach and has improved every year but I do also absolutely believe he has loyalty to a fault with that specific group of 3 players who he coached all through their high school careers. And I think next year when they are all gone it will be like an anchor removed from his neck and Penny's will become a top tier coach.

It's acknowledged by the OP. Having a 2 guard with size who can actually score and create on his own, knock down open shots, etc lightens the opposite guard's load even more.

Not having to guard a short, non perimeter threat means defenses can 'spy' on KD making his job harder when it comes to scoring. But hey, what do fans know. It's not like the OP is using the actual definition of what guards (1 or 2) should be able to do (knock down outside shots) 03-shhhh
