RE: Football Offseason - Polish Hammer - 01-19-2023 01:38 PM

Unfortunately it's in all sports now, all about the load management. There's no Willis Reed trotting out on the court anymore, they see guys like Lebron flopping and getting carried off the court by 4 people with a cramp, sprain or minor ding, and now these kids get a ding and then act like they're a warrior once they do get back out there. I wonder what an Edelman or Cribbs would've done this season to play on gameday and fight for that first down instead of sitting out with a tweak or sliding short of the first down marker with the season on the line.

That whole idea of "load management" makes me sick. How long has that term been around?

I like Schlee. Good player but that slide play was chicken crap! Edelman and Cribbs might have scored on the damn play!

And he did it twice that game.

I may be wrong, or just may be where I recall seeing it first was with the NBA. They started resting players while out on the road, and the home team fans would get pissed because they came to see Joe Superstar play and he sat. So, coming from a sport that had players floating for 3 quarters and then turning it on in the 4th I'm not surprised that they turned it on to include sitting full games. I get it, rest up for the playoffs when the games count (more), but generations of athletes somehow used inferior equipment and gave 100% most nights in the regular season AND the playoffs and survived. Now it's to preserve the brand as well as the body, so it comes down to the $$$, no more "for the love of the game". Ronnie Lott cut a finger off because he didn't want to miss any action, now you get star players sitting out crucial games with the team and everybody relying on them because they need to protect the brand and/or cash in on a new deal.

Thanks, Polish Hammer. I remember that now. Fans would pay exorbitant ticket prices in advance to see some superstar, only to find out when they got to the game that that player needed a "day off". That "brand' crap irks me too.

C’mon, let’s at least be accurate. Whether you like him or not, Lebron, his entire career, logs more minutes each season that just about everyone in the league and some years played more minutes than everyone. Considering his age now, the amount of minutes he’s playing is amazing, especially compared to others his age from any era. You can knock on him for any number of things, and some people have built careers on knocking him, but taking unnecessary time off is not one of them.

True, but I wasn't thinking of LeBron James.

I wasn’t exactly talking about Lebron in regards to “load management”, the example I made was about him being carried off the floor by pallbearers when he has a strain or cramp. The point was now kids emulate that behavior and not Willis Reed playing through severe pain and a muscle tear. And I guess I also shouldn’t paint all sports and athletes with that broad brush, want to know who plays through injuries and not just pain, then look at the articles after a hockey team’s season ends and the full injuries are disclosed.

RE: Football Offseason - anti-zip - 01-19-2023 06:46 PM

Yeah LeBron gets a pass in my book. Between the years he's played, the constant long playoff runs and the summers with team USA he's put in his time if he wants to sit some regular season games. People always seem to forget in the debates across generations that Jordan was retired three times by the time he was Lebron's age. And what he's doing has worked. He's been extremely durable.

To me the pioneer and face of the "Load Management" generation is Kawhi Leonard.

Seeing that Celtic got me thinking of how Red Auerbach or Tommy Heinsohn would have reacted to "load management." Of course, neither could coach today's players.

Our recruits are now going to be a bit smarter…

FootballScoop Wrote:Sources tell FootballScoop that Joe Manion, who's been Harvard's director of recruiting, is departing the Crimson program in order to become the Golden Flashes's director of player personnel.

A University of Nebraska graduate who also has on-field coaching experience from his time with Football Championship Subdivision power Villanova, Manion also has worked in Jeff Monken's recruiting department at Army-West Point in addition to a pair of stints at Harvard.

Last night the Cavs saw the other side. Donovan Mitchell reinsured his groin on the last play of the game. He had missed 3 games and then they played him 38 minutes in his first game back. A little load management would have helped maybe. It’s tough to figure out what’s right and what’s not.
