Kent State vs. Chicago State - fallsdog - 11-17-2022 12:24 PM

The undefeated Golden Flashes welcome the 2-2 Chicago State Cougars to the MAC Center for a Saturday afternoon showdown. Chicago State is coming off two straight wins. The first coming at home against IUPUI and the other also at home against Valpo. Not sure how Valpo is this season but that always stands out as a quality win.
Chicago State's two losses, Northwestern and Saint Thomas University, were both lopsided.

I had the chance to watch Kent State play Pine Bluff in person and have seen the Flashes on TV as well. So rather than drop Chicago State stats, here are my observations of the Golden Flashes:

The Good:
I think this team has the "dudes" to be at the top of the MAC. Carry, Jacobs and Santiago all bring something different to the table. Their collective ability to score, rebound and run the show makes for a formidable backcourt. It appears that Sullinger, and Rollins to an extent, are capable of picking up some slack if any of those first three is having an off night or in foul trouble.

As for the frontcourt, I am a big fan of Hornbeak. He seems to be comfortable finding his way into the flow of the game (even if yesterday's game lacked flow). Thomas rebounds fairly well and looks like a guy that could have some big nights when the Flashes are hot from the perimeter and he gets loose.

From what I can tell Davis and Payton are getting first crack at getting the rest of the minutes in the post. I don't think I'm alone when I say that Davis seems to be trending up.

Statistically, one thing that I really like is that Kent is +25 in the turnover department. There is some real athleticism on the court and I feel like they can give the opponents all sorts of heck on defense.

The Bad:
The only real criticism I have is that at times the energy seems to just goes away. A couple lazy plays really stood out yesterday the most disappointing of which was an inbound pass after a Pine Bluff Basket that was so lazy and nonchalant I thought Coach Senderoff was going to blow a gasket.

Finally, I wouldn't call this bad...but...it is rather clear that KSU hasn't been tested. Im not sure Chicago State changes that. But C of C should. Hopefully Charleston gives Kent all they can handle and more before the Houston and Gonzaga games.

The ugly:
I know, I know, I can't help myself. But dear goodness. The pre-game atmosphere was obnoxious. Turn it down a bit, mix up the song selection and make it more appealing. More upbeat. More fun.

GO FLASHES!

Valpo was beaten pretty handily by Toledo in their opener and the final score was closer than the game really was. But they also beat WMU soundly, so that gives you an idea of their quality. About bottom third of the MAC good.

The only missing piece i worry is a consistent 3 pt maker. While our 4 guards can get hot from deep a consistent Dev Manley, Eric Haut type guy would be great on this team.

Oh and 3 of the last 4 years we've had knuckehead moments leading into the MAC tourney (2 fights and the video last year). I hope we can avoid that this year.

Agree on all, re THE UGLY. It will keep donors and season holders away.
Not a family atmosphere. Listen to Lyrics of songs . Borderline obscene.
KSU has a ton of people involved in game day . They all are clueless.
My season ticket and donating days coming to an end. Love the team, Love the coaches but its not enjoyable anymore.

Disagree with this. Gio is very proven from 3. He's a 40% career 3pt shooter and it would be higher if he didn't have the rough stretch where COVID stole his jumper last year. Haut and Dev were both 40% career shooters as well. Carry and Thomas are both accomplished shooters. Sullinger looks like he could be a very good shooter too. And Davis and Jacobs have shown improvement this year, although it's early. I think shooting could be a strength this year.

Just curious, as I've been unable to go to any games yet. Only 11 players have got into a game so far, yet the online roster shows 16. Obvious 3 can't be on scholarship. Does anyone know the status of the 5 that haven't played? Redshirt? Injury or whatever?

Older and Older,

I am glad others agree. I was in attendance with my two sons. They are obsessed with Sincere Carry. They love hoops. But more than once my older son 7 years old!) asked me if they just said a bad word. Look, we’ve been down this road before on this forum. But this is a direct call to Rob Senderoff and the AD….fix this! It’s a embarrassment. I don’t accept that it’s the new normal.
Listen to the sex, violence and drugs songs in the locker room,,,,clean it up in the arena.

Go Flashes!

Just from what I've observed... Moss and Bekelja don't dress so I assume they're redshirting. I believe they're the two additional scholarship players. Both guards so redshirting makes a lot of sense with our current group of guards.

Maiden and Entenmann dress but haven't got in even in garbage time. My guess is they dress both for emergency purposes but not playing in garbage time means they probably want to redshirt both since they're true freshmen.

Carpenter doesn't dress so my assumption is he's not playing this year. If he's getting grades in order or has an injury and could eventually play it'd be news to me... But there's very little coverage of the team so who knows.

Nice little homestand! Looking forward to watching KSU compete against some stiff competition in the next month.

RE: Kent State vs. Chicago State - anti-zip - 11-19-2022 04:48 PM

Jacobs had a points steals double double in 26 minutes today. He gets a lot of steals.

RE: Kent State vs. Chicago State - Muskrat - 11-19-2022 05:04 PM

I left about 5 minutes in to the second half. They played very well, especially on the defensive end, in the first half but they started out the second half the way a team typically plays when they know they are going to win easily. I really love the defense of Jacobs.

RE: Kent State vs. Chicago State - anti-zip - 11-19-2022 06:26 PM

Is the Wikipedia KSU stats leaders page is to be believed it looks like our previous record for steals in a game was 8. The most we've ever had in a season is 76. Jacobs is at 17 having played in only 4 games. It's hard to catch eyes with defense but I really believe he plays defense at an NBA level.

RE: Kent State vs. Chicago State - GFlash68 - 11-19-2022 07:07 PM

I do not want to judge too optimistically before we really play somebody, but today I saw a team that has been coached the right way and growing with it. I was worried before that we had too many players with self-creating abilities. This usually leads to too much dribbling and not enough assisting. But pleasantly, today I saw players giving it up for teammates. I saw good passing and rebounding and the defense was team defense. This team is fun and they can be very good.

Agree. It was good team play. Seven players had at least one assist.

RE: Kent State vs. Chicago State - anti-zip - 11-19-2022 08:19 PM

Wanted to mention one play that really pissed me off tonight. Carry's shoe falls off while making a pass for an assist. Rather than stop play on the inbound pass or during transition, they forced him to play a full possession with one shoe. I hope the coaches told him if that happens again just stop and put it back on. Playing a possession 4 on 5 is better than him slipping on his sock and getting hurt.
