Last game: WVU broke open a close early game with a 10-0 run and finished the half on a 11-2 run to lead 42-31 @HT. The teams traded baskets throughout the second half with SJF never getting close than 6 pts as the Marlins iced the game with FTs and won 80-69. Omari Deveaux led the Marlins with 21 pts (5-11 FG, 3-6 3s, 8-8 FT), Amari Moorer came off the bench with 13 (5-7 FG, 1-2 3s, 2-3 FT) and Jordan Crump added 12 (4-10 FG, 2-5 3s, 2-2 FT).

This is the sort of team that a lot of FBS teams want to avoid playing. They are small but take a ton of 3s and make a good portion of them. We will need to dominate the glass.

Its bad enough to play a DIII team in pre-season. Why are these guys even on the schedule in the regular season? Can't ODU find a Radford, Hampton, Norfolk State, Longwood, UNC Greensboro, VMI, anyone in D-1 to play?

ODU should have no problem dispatching with VA Wesleyan no matter how many tons of threes they take. To lose this game - especially at home -should be inexcusable.

Its 1 out of 16 home games against a local non division 1 school. Many of our peers do the same exact thing.
Do I love it? no. Does it really makes a difference to me? No. Looks like most, if not all, of our conference mates are doing the same thing. And VWU is much better than some of these schools.

You should probably look around the entire league we're in. Every team is playing these games and some are playing multiple. For example, JMU plays 3 non-D1s at home; Valley Forge (D3), Coastal Georgia (NAIA) and Gallaudet (D3).

You should probably look around the entire league we're in. Every team is playing these games and some are playing multiple. For example, JMU plays 3 non-D1s at home; Valley Forge (D3), Coastal Georgia (NAIA) and Gallaudet (D3).
Most of us probably know that other teams are doing it. We just don't want to be doing it ourselves. Not every school has the same basketball history or scheduling history that ODU has. This season our schedule doesn't reflect that history and is easily viewed as further proof of our decline.

B) I loathe playing teams that are not D-1. But, they are a lot cheaper than paying another MEAC team to come here, so I get it.

I don't think scheduling this game would be as big of a deal if we had some beef elsewhere in the schedule. It's the entire schedule that is a joke, and makes this game stand out even more.

We do play VT and who knows in the tourney
I have no issues playing:
ECU
Charleston
Norfolk State
W&M
George Mason
It comes down to playing MES, Wesleyan, and Gardner Webb. Thats really 3 games to complain about. And I'm not sure Gardners Webb is actually a bad opponent this year. Having VCU bail on us obviously had an impact.
Overall, the non conference schedule may actually be better than the last few years.

Agree. The fact most other SBC schools do the same thing may be a partial answer as to why the conference is rated so low.

This is the problem for me. It's not the single game - it's the weakness of the overall OOC slate. I know the landscape has changed and all that, but we haven't exactly done ourselves any favors with recent performance/lack of investment into the program and now we are who we used to be above. It's a trend, and it's a downward one, just like pretty much everything associated with the program in the last several years.

The "new world" thing must have happened in a hurry then. Just 3 seasons ago ODU didn't have a single game against a team that wasn't D-1. If it's become a money thing then that too relates (negatively) to our basketball history and scheduling history in that we historically have done better at both scheduling those games and winning a fair amount of them. We're making the case for the better teams like VCU to drop us with this kind of schedule and with the recent results we have had.

So ODU is THAT BROKE Coach? They did this because "it's cheaper" ? DIII, really? Its horrible. Who cares what the other folks in this league does.
Wow, so ODU is broke huh. It seems to be broke in more than $$$$. And why not pay Norfolk State to come besides the fear of getting beat by them? Hampton?
