Eh.. I still think they're the best team. Conference games aren't easy. Teams know you well. They are still 2 kenpom and the most balanced of the contenders (offense and defense).

Of course i don't think there is a particular dominant, great team this year.

They are an incredibly balanced team - kenpom #8 AdjO / #5 AdjD. What stands out to me is they just know how to win - bigly or ugly. 80-12 over the past three seasons including a FF and E8. Just insane...

This is their best team too. Walker is the first legit lottery type pick they've had. The champions always have at least one.

That Walker kid impressed the hell out of me on Saturday. He just kept comin' and got better as the game wore on.

Any team that comes down to the wire against USF has warts. Since UC's 1st game against Houston, they have looked beatable. Early in the season they looked like Phi Slamma Jamma. They've hit the doldrums a bit.

The AAC malaise affects even the greatest teams.

NET was designed to benefit the big boys. At least we'll get that next year. Here's NET next to the best predictive metrics we have. NET is lower on EVERY AAC team except Houston...absolutely absurd.

If you had to say place a bet on who you think would win March Madness this year.. who do you have? I know we are a month away and no seedings.
Who is the early favorite though.

There is no dominant team this year. Somebody will get hot here soon and carry it through March. Who knows who that will be, but if I had to pick somebody I would say Alabama. They just got an eye opener saturday and will likely gain focus from that.

I can tell you who it wont be. Purdue.

Notorius chokers will fill the bill again. Too many freshman playing big minutes and if Edy was six inches shorter he would be playing at Mt. St. Joe.

One team this year is tough.

If I had to select the final 4 teams without knowing the bracket at this point I’d prolly go with something like:

1) Houston
2) Arizona
3) Kansas
4) Alabama/Baylor tied

Today in, The Big 12 is absolutely bonkers, fun.

Texas Tech is 66 kenpom (UC is 64) and they are 0-8 in the Big 12.

Oklahoma is 37 kenpom, just smoked Alabama, and are 2-6 in the Big 12.

West Virginia is 20 kenpom, 2-6 in the Big 12 (started 0-5)

4 are top 15 kenpom

7 are top 25 kenpom

9 are top 37 kenpom.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Bolded, that's the conventional wisdom and I'm inclined to agree. Who would have imagined Mick in the Final Four after his NCAA struggles here? Purdue seems to have all or most of the pieces and maybe this year the shots drop for them at the right time.

More shocking to me was hearing on a telecast this past weekend that Purdue was the only B10 team ranked this past week! Plenty of talent in that conference still but that's almost unimaginable at the end of January and with the media love the B10 consistently receives.

That year that Virginia beat Purdue in overtime.. Can't remember the kid that Purdue had but he was awesome.. it was the luckiest shots Virginia was making. Amazing. Year after Virginia becomes the first team to get knocked out by a 16 seed as a 1.. they follow it up by winning an NC

That should have been Purdues year..

Not sure I'd call it "the luckiest shots". Virginia was an elite offensive team and got great shots most of that game. That was the game Carsen Edwards played one of the greatest games I've ever seen. 42 points, against that Virginia defense is insane. And he was launching from everyone. I watched that entire game thinking Virginia was playing basically perfect basketball, but Carsen Edwards was single handedly making it a game. I still think it's my favorite non-Bearcat game I've ever watched.

Normally I would laugh at O$U losing again to fall to 11-11... if only they didn't beat our a$$ by 28 earlier in the season.

Something is wrong with Houston. They are making busted ass Wichita State look like equals tonight.

They just haven't been that great for a month.

Feels like they've become too dependent on hitting low efficiency shots. They have guys that can and when they do they are near impossible to beat. But when those contested two point jumpers and runners aren't falling teams can hang.

Also winning in the road is hard.

RE: 2022-23 College Basketball General Thread - rath v2.0 - 02-02-2023 10:22 PM

It feels like they have been figured out in game tape.

They are good. They aren't really great.

They have been very mortal for a while now.

RE: 2022-23 College Basketball General Thread - The Big O - 02-02-2023 11:01 PM

This game is going the same way ours did against Houston.

RE: 2022-23 College Basketball General Thread - rath v2.0 - 02-02-2023 11:09 PM

Houston is busted when they face real teams in March. They remind me of Mick's UC teams. Talented in a very very limited lane.

Sampson needs to change things up or they will be toast by the Sweet 16 or earlier. They have the talent to be way better than this.

RE: 2022-23 College Basketball General Thread - bearcatmark - 02-02-2023 11:25 PM

Houston will be fine. They are coming off a final 4 and elite 8. This is their best team.

They are all number 1 kenpom (and basically every other predictive metric). They are top 10 in offensive and defensive efficiency. They aren't going to bulldoze everyone. That's just not how it works.
