The AAC was stupid not to take middle Tennessee

Not laughing till after the FSU game. Then I can laugh after the Noles win.

Pretty extraordinary. We're talking about a MTSU team that lost 44-7 to James Madison to open the season. JMU did squeak out a win over App St. today...but still. The "Big 3" in FL were invincible in games like these back in the 90's and would win like 70-3.

Say hello to the transfer portal! Talent which sits on the bench somewhere will be playing somewhere else next year. It is taking the depth away from the major brands which once stockpiled talent much of which wouldn't see regular playing time and is redistributing that talent elsewhere. So, we will see some parity and solid coaches at small schools can knock off some big boys with overrated coaches with some frequency. What you will see more of is the rapid fall of a program with a crappy coach (Auburn since last year as much of the depth simply went elsewhere) and the rapid recovery of other programs when they get a solid new coach. Languishing for half a decade to recover will now be a 2 year turnaround, or a 2 year collapse.

And back up QB's are now like going straight to your #3 or #4 because #2 is starting somewhere else after year one.

After collecting his $1.4m NIL deal at tOSU first ofc…

Seriously, between transfer portal and NIL, we are entering a new age in CFB.

It does raise questions about the viability of the sport's prevailing patterns—chasing bigger and bigger payouts, consolidating conferences.

What does it profit a program to hold a spot in the P2 and knock down 80M a year 'at the big boys table' if the revolving door can take half of last year's recruits to Coastal Carolina for a spot in this year's playoffs?

I’ve been trying to point this out. Unless they start playing with 33 guys on a side at a time, there’s no way you’re stockpiling and developing blue chip talent on the bench anymore. The GOAL is the NFL, not 40k for a season.

You do know what the response to this will be? A breakaway upper tier which plays in a closed system. The ADs at the P5 schools all know this. It's coming. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

I'm not saying it's right, just pointing out that brands maintained their status with roster depth and perks. Now that roster depth is challenged and perks can be had anywhere, they will protect brand with exposure at the highest level and limited access.

Consolidation is about limited access, not just expanded playoff slots. Networks like the predictable and guaranteed viewer numbers. The two go hand in hand.

It may please you to be reminded that the coach of the MTSU Blue Raiders is Florida State grad Rick Stockstill.

Quote from the coach: Fantastic win, extremely proud and happy for our players. It's always fun to do stuff that no one thinks you can do. Coming down here 26 point dogs and kicking their butt like we did, because it was butt kicking, there was no fluke to this. Just really proud of our team. We were the tougher team here tonight, mentally and physically... We never flinched. That's what I'm proud of, we knocked these suckers off.

Spoken like true Bowden-era QB, dadgummit.

Another fun fact: The Hurricanes paid MTSU $1.5M for the game.

I think that's why the transfer portal is being re-examined. There is a potential game-changer, I believe, but this concept is so huge, it really requires its own post.

Why? That’s not going to deter somebody to play there instead of a non-breakaway school for three seasons if they get the same money and maybe more attention.

The fact of the matter is the athletes look at college as a stepping stone, not a minor league system.

Any breakaway will include pay for play as well and yes, they will be seen more as a minor league, like the SEC already is viewed, only with a breakaway it will be formalized with the pay. SCOTUS could take us there within 2 years anyway.

"Butt-kicking" is the polite term for what happened.

Also, can someone please tell my brother (who was in school with Stockstill at FSU) to quit sending me text messages with variations of "Are you OK?" when he just wants to give me a hard time about Miami getting slaughtered 03-nutkick

At least the Gators lost, too, so my brother who attended UF can get his fair share of this Nole gloating after Saturday's games 03-rotfl

RE: Can we all have a moment and - BruceMcF - 09-25-2022 10:37 AM

Lessee, MTSU beats Miami, Tennessee beats Florida, Louisville beat USF, Purdue beat Florida Atlantic, WKU beat FIU.

UCF beat Georgia Tech, FSU beat Boston College.

The only pattern I see is that Florida schools shouldn't play Tennessee or Kentucky schools in Week 4. Florida schools were 0-4 against Tennessee & Kentucky schools, 2-1 against everyone else.

Go Vols!

Guys on the ACC board tell me Miami is going to be dominant again due to all their Starter jacket sales in 1992.

Yeah, if only it was that easy. Gonna be a long climb ...

Also, why bother with the message board of a dying conference? Sounds like a miserable place :)

Now, MTSU had 408 yard passing, 99 yards rushing in 36 carries for 2.8 yards per carry.

Miami had 307 yards passing, 60 yards rushing in 39 carries for 1.6 yards per carry.

The Texas A&M game was nowhere near as unbalanced, but a few more games like the MTSU game, and Miami might rise right near the top of the ACC charts in the "total yards passing by both teams" stat.
