As Bearcat fans, historically, we're not used to preseason football rankings much at all.

In this case, I could argue it should be higher based upon back-to-back undefeated regular seasons. Yes, we lost a lot of fine players. So did every other ranked program--on average I suppose 20-25% move on each year since this isn't the NFL.

While I wouldn't rank our 'Cats a lot higher, I do think we still suffer from the G5 stigma as well as being a national brand for no more than a dozen years or so. The only downside to this is a tough loss at Arkansas will bounce UC out week one and it's always a long, slow climb back up the ladder in any G5 conference.

Pre season polls suck.

If we had "Notre Dame" across our jerseys we'd be ranked #5.

How Notre Dame can be ranked #5 with their question marks at QB and wide receiver positions is hard to understand.

RE: Top 25 Polls - geef - 08-15-2022 03:33 PM

We could have been ranked a bit higher, but I'm fine with where we came in, particularly considering that the likes of Texas, Tennessee, Iowa, Penn State, LSU, Auburn and Florida - a handful of which have reasonable hopes coming in - are unranked.

RE: Top 25 Polls - Bruce Monnin - 08-15-2022 04:03 PM

I am sure many voters have their bottom spots in the rankings reserved for G5 type teams, that's why Cincinnati, Houston and BYU all ended up there. Had we been in the Big XII this year, I imagine we would have started either several spots higher, or possibly unranked.

Wait for Big12 teams to get docked a few spots after TX and OK leave.

Wilner generally had UC ranked better than most going back to the BK Big East days.

Same here. You can throw in Florida State, Nebraska and UCLA as some other programs that would kill to start in the Top 25. My how times have changed.

By my count UC is starting in the Preseason AP Poll for the third year in a row. Not too shabby!

Those 45 consecutive poll appearances represent exactly 1/2 of our all-time appearances in the poll. We're still only 67th all-tie, wedged between Oregon State and Air Force:

At least we're on the tails of OSU, Kentucky and Kansas.

Third year in a row and third year ever.

Yep. The things we have to complain about these days we would have wished for a few short years ago.

Will the new Big 12 get disrespected in the polls next season? Quite possibly; I think the Big East certainly did after the departure of VT and Miami. As long as Luke is here, we should be mentioned with the top of the league though--hopefully with Baylor, Oklahoma State and BYU. We can compare the TV money to the SEC and B10 and be depressed, or, compare it to what we've had while making the CFP last season and be ecstatic. It's all a matter of perspective.

We've fallen out, currently 29th:

Couple weeks we should be right back in. SEC bias will actually help us as well.

How anybody is still voting for oregon is nuts

RE: Top 25 Polls - bcat1997 - 09-06-2022 04:12 PM

Agree, #29 in both polls I thought was fair and gives us a chance to be back in there after IU win

RE: Top 25 Polls - UCGrad1992 - 09-06-2022 06:13 PM

I'll take #29. I absolutely will. If you're going to lose, lose early in the season, on the road and against a ranked opponent. See Notre Dame and Utah. Oregon was the ranked pig in a poke and they sure fell from grace LOL.

Since I have been critical of certain AP voters in the past, I will also call out when they are supportive of our Bearcats. Case in point this week...

14 Jon Wilner [Highest Vote]
21 Nathan Baird

Reece is typically very fair to us...
24 Reece Davis

I feel like this year’s team is “almost” as good as last year’s, but whether that means best in the AAC remains to be seen. Problem with a lower-tier conference is that you get no respect for finishing second.
