This makes a ton of sense scheduling-wise. Essentially all but guarantees a divisional split in terms of basketball scheduling, with each division having a pretty solid core. Howard would have been a great academic add, but it would have been awkward putting them in the southern division when their closest neighbor, Towson, would be in the northern division. No such issue with Campbell.
Also lends itself really well to football scheduling as TDenverFan pointed out. Having a natural way to avoid separating Villanova and Delaware is pretty huge. I would be shocked if 5x3 isn't the overall plan.
As for a full conference split along N/S lines, I think the possibility is there if there are no defections in the next decade and we start to see wholesale rearranging of the college landscape. However, I don't know how thrilled Elon and W&M would be about it, because all signs indicate they like having ties to the northeast. However, in the interest of the thought experiment, this is what I think you could see:
Acela Conference
Delaware
Howard (I think the CAA makes another pass at Howard, who would be hard-pressed not to accept at this point)
Monmouth
Towson
Stony Brook
Drexel (non-football)
Fairfield (non-football)
Hofstra (non-football)
Northeastern (non-football)
1-3 of Albany, Quinnipiac, and UMBC
Binghamton would be the deadest of dead weight. As would Maine, and I doubt UNH jumps without them. I don't think Vermont jumps for anyone but the A-10.
Colonial Conference
Campbell
Elon
Hampton
NC A&T
William & Mary
Charleston (non-football)
UNC-Wilmington (non-football)
3 extra schools, grab bag of choices. Can they pry UNCG? Do they raid the Big South again and draw Winthrop, High Point, and/or Longwood?
The key with this, therefore, would be figuring out the southern half. The northern half would take care of itself fairly easily, it's essentially an America East without the dead weight and I think that would be attractive to potential adds. But the path forward is not necessarily as obvious in the southern half. More than likely, I think the CAA stays the course with a large conference with two separate geographic cores, rather than ultimately splitting in two.
