PAC 10 - CKMcDan - 07-20-2022 12:01 PM

Finally, an article that suggests the Pac10 stay together, and add San Diego State & BRIGHAM YOUNG.

That's our ticket to the Big 12.

RE: PAC 10 - MemTigers1998 - 07-20-2022 12:06 PM

No way on Earth do all of the west coast liberal clowns at Stanford & Cal Bezerkley, Oregon, Washington, etc allow BYU into their league. I could see the PAC making a pitch to Houston to get into Texas at which point the geniuses in the Big 12 would offer SMU to keep a “share of the Texas market” or would they be as dumb as Aresco and offer Rice to keep the Houston market like the AAC did?

I guess you should never say NEVER, but.... I don't see the PAC ever inviting BYU. West coast vibe doesn't really jive with morman teachings.

But don't they all wear magic underwear?

RE: PAC 10 - ImaTiger - 07-20-2022 01:19 PM

I think the issues with BYU are that the junior and seniors on the team are older by as much as 2 years because of a special 'sabbatical' rule they get.

At this point, the whole damn thing called college ball is has little integrity. Let every school have the extra years and get on down the road.

Really, as far as college football is concerned. I am at a loss to besides PED's... what the 'fairness' rules there should be.

Utah is in the Pac 12 or 10. The whole state has a lot of Mormons in it.

I think it is very possible the PAC invites BYU - might depend on whether Utah wants them in or not.

A lot of the people who go to Utah the school may be mormon, whether the school is affilitated with the church or not.
Same with Utah State.

Oh, I don’t know about that. Think of it as a whole new territory for proselytizing - especially at all the away games….

To survive, they'd have to.
Utah would 'bite the bullet' so to speak. Or else kiss the tv money they enjoy now bye bye....and maybe have to join the MWC.

Not so fast my friend…. Times have drastically changed. The Stanford and Cal’s risk being plunged into complete irrelevancy if the PAC blows up. If the PAC doesn’t do something soon, you might see Utah, Arizona, ASU, ans Colorado bolt for the B12.

The same thing was said about BYU and the B12 until Texas and OU bolted. Sound familiar?

Mormons are.

There is no Texas market.

The SEC has Texas sewn up.

The top Big XII team IN Houston is a Red headed step child in Houston to UT and aTm.

Same for Dallas/Ft Worth.

About the only city where this is not true is Waco.

PAC should go four teams. SD St, Boise, AF and BYU, IF Utah doesn't blackball BYU.

The Big XII has nothing to offer these teams.

All it ever had was the Texas TV market that it no longer controls.

The SEC now owns the Texas TV market and the Big XII doesn't control a single top 20 TV market.

Without counting California the PAC 12 still has complete control of Phoenix, Denver, and Seattle.

No reason to leave PAC for the Big XII.

The teams in the PAC are running scared after USC and UCLA split. It’s a known fact that both Oregon and Wash were lobbying the B1G for a spot. The others obviously know this and also know if both of those teams leave, the conference is trashed. So while Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and ASU would have laughed about joining the B12 a couple of months ago, they’re seriously considering it now. They’ve finally realized there is no loyalty and the top two remaining teams are actively shopping themselves. A more stable spot is, believe it or not, the B12 and the bigger TV contract is almost positively the B12. The PAC is going to get a significantly smaller TV deal. One because the 2 big draws have left, two because the next two are trying to.

Look at the projected TV deals for the B12 and the PAC (now that the LA teams are leaving). The PAC is in a world of hurt, and their new TV contract will reflect losing their best programs and their current instability.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see teams bolt for the B12.

RE: PAC 10 - UofMemphis - 07-20-2022 08:40 PM

SDSU + Gonzaga seems to be the PAC's best bet for expansion IMHO

Nope. Gonzaga last fielded a varsity football team 81 years ago in 1941....

OR & WA are like us, we may be actively trying to leave our conference, but no one is taking us at this very moment. So they understand they will have to wait until the next round of realignment & even then there is no certainty they will get to move up then. There are widespread reports that both fall short of the B1G revenue valuations for expansion.

I get that PAC revenues are going to be hurt, but only B12 fans are saying their revenue will outpace both the PAC & ACC. I am very skeptical of those claims for a couple of reasons. 1st I don’t believe the loss of OUT is offset by the 4 teams brought in. 2nd, like mentioned before the B12 is TX centered but none of their teams are the dominant tv draw, that’s easily TX & ATM. 3rd, the only states where the B12 is the top draw are KS & WV, not TV market goldmines. 4th, ESPN is likely not heavily involved for the bidding for the top tier B12 rights, although I think they would like the bottom tier for ESPN+.
It appears FOX is stepping away from PAC now that they have the LA market in the B1G, so that is hurting the PAC contract in a similar way. Both FOX & ESPN are going to have to find ways of paying the B1G & SEC & that is going to come at the expense of the PAC, B12, & later the ACC deals either not getting the normal growth or being outright reduced due to loosing top brands.

If the B12 didn’t have the 2 year tv revenue exit penalties of $80M (inflated by OUT still in calculations) right now, it’s more likely a B12 team would go to PAC as there are still more prominent schools there. However if the tv $ take a dive in the next contract that fee is lowered. So I think each conference is unable to raid each other now, & likely the PAC add a couple of MWC teams. Then they likely play this game again in 5-10 years when tv realignment happens again & the B12 is then more vulnerable.
