RE: Phil Steele - AAC 2022 Rankings - NTXCoog - 06-28-2022 11:42 AM

So best AAC team is 30th and only 3 teams in top 50 (UH #50)?

Congrats Temple. Only AAC team >100 at #126. Navy close at #98.

Seems a liitle pessimistic for the conference

He got our record exactly right last year. Anyone have the 2021 predictions for the whole AAC handy?

RE: Phil Steele - AAC 2022 Rankings - UofMemphis - 06-28-2022 12:52 PM

Ryan Silverfield's 'make-or-break' season IMHO.

RE: Phil Steele - AAC 2022 Rankings - MemphisFootballFan - 06-28-2022 01:39 PM

Phil Steele makes a fun magazine but predicting the future is very difficult! I think Memphis will end up top 3 in the conference and I will be disappointed if we aren't in the championship game.

RE: Phil Steele - AAC 2022 Rankings - ArmoredUpKnight - 06-28-2022 02:38 PM

Looks about right as far as preseason rankings go.

Phil Steele is the gold standard. Many media members carry this with them all season long. Many AP voters use this as the basis for their preseason ballot.

Prepare to be disappointed. I think we go 5-7 or 6-6 at best.

The pessimism of older Memphis fans is something I will never get used to.

We have a Freshman All American QB returning, we've had the best recruiting classes in school history the last 2 years in a row. The talent on this team is definitely top tier in the conference. The RB room is stacked. I really like both of our new coordinators. This team is going to surprise some people.

You calling me a pessimist is hilarious. I'm usually accused of being too optimistic. I simply try to be realistic, so one side or the other always seems to be offended.

Our Schedule:

@ Miss State L
@ Navy W (but we have only won once up there, and it's always close)
Ark State W
No Texas W
Temple W
Houston L
@ ECU L
@ Tulane L (we have lost the last 2 there)
UCF L (we have beaten them one time)
Tulsa W
No Alabama W
@ SMU L

That comes out to 6-6, my best case scenario. 5-7 if we lose to Navy.

In conference, that's 3-5. We would likely have to go 7-1 in conference to make a championship game. That means win all but 1 vs. @ Navy, Houston, @ECU, @ Tulane, UCF and @ SMU.

I'm not sure I'm the unrealistic one.

What record do you see us having?

P.S. Believe it or not, this is a make or break year for Silverfield. If he goes 6-6 or 5-7, he will likely be fired.

I hope you are right, and he is successful here for a long time. I just don't see it.

We beat ECU and Tulane. And win at least one of either UCF or Houston at home. I agree with you about Silverfield if we don't win 8 games this year he is done. I think we will though. This is a really good team.

I predict Memphis 4th even though 4-7 looks like a toss up to me.

You didn't beat us at home last year, and barely edged Tulane. Both are on the road this year, and both of your coordinators are new. Being in the CCG their first year is a tall order.

That said, I don't think Silverfield is gone with a 6-6 season.

Well, you're also saying that we win at Navy and win at SMU, in addition to winning at ECU and at Tulane, and beating one of Houston or UCF.

I'd say you and I are miles apart. Of those 6, I say we win 1. You say we win 5.

Even if you're right, we still probably wouldn't make the CG, b/c the team we lost to would win our tiebreaker and likely play Cincy.

Also, if we win 7, I doubt RS gets fired.

RE: Phil Steele - AAC 2022 Rankings - Gmoney4WW - 06-29-2022 05:47 AM

Phil Steele's rankings as well as everybody else's are going to be thrown off by teams doing really well or really badly in the transfer portal in the late spring/summer months.

We just finished our last transfers like yesterday. We completely reworked our OL with transfers in like the last 4 weeks. We had four OL transfers in the last 4 weeks, and 1 more in the previous two weeks. That's 1/3 of our OL in 6 weeks. In that same time period we picked up 4 other transfers & 1 Juco. That's 10 players in the last 6 weeks. Nobody doing preseason rankings already, has a chance to evaluate like 40% of our new players.(All of which are transfers and Juco, who come in more prepared to play immediately than freshman.) I'm sure many other teams have similar stories.
