Every conference commissioner likely has a "who's next" list ... - PeteTheChop - 06-16-2022 10:42 AM

... so how do y'all think those lists might look for the "P-5" conferences?

There's obviously levels of desirability and fit for each "candidate" as we all know, so the schools are sorted into tiers (and sub-tiers) to indicate a pecking order from the conference's standpoint if a decision to expand were to proceed and GoR's have either expired, dissolved or proven not to be an insurmountable obstacle.

Tier 1 = A take

IMO, if Notre Dame is ever serious about joining a conference as a full member, including football, they're a tier 1 for every conference.

Also I would add Iowa state and Kansas state to Tier 3 for the PAC.

Just IMO, but don't think Notre Dame will join any conference as an all-sports member except for the B1G. Tried to limit the list to where there is conceivably at least a "small" chance of such additions taking place.

Possible the Pac-12 might reach as far as the suburbs of KC for a program with KU's stature in basketball but don't believe lesser lights from that far out of the current footprint would be sought.

If Notre Dame is ever in the position that it will join the SEC, I would be surprised if Michigan, Ohio St, and Penn St weren't too far behind.

Nah, the SEC thinks bigger than that.

Their “Tier 1” team is Ohio State.

I was thinking the SEC probably has the biggest list.

Tier 1: Ohio State/USC
Tier 2: The blue bloods that come with Ohio State and USC
Tier 3: Whoever they want out of the ACC to round it out.

Any smart commissioner should have contingency plans in place.

At this point, the driving force is determined by how big the SEC and Big 10 want to go. Is the future 16, 18, 20, or 24?

Ohio State is a much, much easier add for the SEC.
Look at a map. Ohio State is:
-- Already adjacent to an SEC state
-- Less than 200 miles from the University of Kentucky
-- Less than 400 miles from both the University of Tennessee and Vanderbilt
-- Closer to the University of Alabama (by a few miles) than Alabama is to Texas A&M, and quite a bit closer to Alabama than Alabama is to SEC newbies Oklahoma and Texas

If you believe North Carolina/Duke are still "in charge" of the ACC, West Virginia is going to be a hard sell for the ACC.

I think your statement about Notre Dame and their preferences is probably correct, my statement is more from a the conference commissioner standpoint. If these conferences wouldn't move heaven and earth to get the Irish if they were available they're crazy.

Most likely some combination of both

If Clemson and Florida State leave, I'd rate the chances of West Virginia joining the ACC even lower. Clemson and Florida State are probably two of the biggest reasons Louisville is in the ACC in the first place instead of Connecticut. Take two of the "football" schools away and that's two fewer votes and more power for UNC/Duke/UVa (we're assuming they don't leave as well of course).
