Memphis really needs to figure a way out of the AAC because beginning in 2023 it is simply CUSA 4.0.

CUSA 4.0! I am truly weary of Tiger fans constantly denigrating the Tigers Conference. The winner of this conference title will always be a very competitive and worthy champion. I am looking forward to the Tigers winning another title soon. The fact that the Tigers won one title and shared one title over the last 10 years has always put the lie to the claim that our conferences haven't been worthy. I like sport, I am a Tiger fan, I can't wait for the next season to begin, and for the next championship to come.

Gotta face reality. The AAC is taking a BIG, big hit with these three leaving. Anyone who says otherwise is just being intentionally dumb.

NIL dollars have changed the landscape of fb and men's bb - permanently. If Memphis can't get into the B12 - which will become a shadow of itself when Texas and OU leave - then it has no chance to remain what Fuente and Norvell made it in fb - None.

The B12 minus UT & OU will be about a half-step better than the current AAC but even it was the same treading water is still better than back sliding.

Oh, it won't happen overnight - it never does. It will be a long, slow, somewhat gentle slide back down the ladder to fb irrelevance. You will wake up in 5-6 years and realize what's happened.

Sadly, I have to realistically agree.

I may be wrong but I think this opens up an OOC slot for football in 2023 and 2024 now, so maybe we can get someone good on the OOC schedule.

I was under the impression that the other schools slated to join the AAC would be joining in time for the 2023 season. Was I wrong in my understanding of that?

You are correct. Their joining was was set to happen as soon as the other teams left (even if they left early). At least, that's what I read in a DM article.

The best way out is to dominate the league on the football field every year.

I thought we had better records than Hou/Cinn the last few years--even head 2 head . I think we found out that results mean nothing

You could not be more wrong.

The new teams eliminate every other G5 conference from consideration for the new year's bowl.

Only other conference with any consideration would be MWC and they're basically an one pony show.

The AAC cherry picked the other G5 conference and will remain a PG1 conference.

Need to look at more than just the names on the front of the uniform.
I am looking at the name on the uniform and I see schools that no one cares about and don't move any needle.

I have to disagree ----if this conference was/is a quality conference ---then why have we been trying to get out... being champ of conference USA 2.0 --would be like a boxing champion never fighting the actual contenders ---just fighting those washed up with glass jaws and bleeders

If/when the next shakeup comes we better hope we get in the club----because if we are not #2 on everybodys list again --and we are left out again--then we will be akin to division 2--we are in trouble -its over as we know it. If we get left out again --then those pinning over a tiny mickey mouse stadium might get their wish when they tarp over 1/2 the seats in MEMPHIS MEMORIAL STADIUM for the 10K that will be attending

This has been a quality conference. How many New years 6 bowls have AAC teams been to...3? 4? (with UCF I lost count)
1 team made it to the playoffs from this conference last season...so that tells you what the quality of the AAC has been.
Who is to say that it cannot be rebuilt?
The teams coming in will get the same higher profile on tv that our teams have had over other G5 conferences...along with increased recruiting opportunities.
It is up to each individual incoming team to make the sacrifices needed to compete that teams like Memphis, Houston, Cinci, and UCF have made...but I think at least 1 or 2 incoming teams...maybe even 3 will be that willing.

In your opinion, what 2-3 are willing to make the sacrifice. Can you share any data, articles to substantiate?

I might be naive in this thinking, but does anyone think that the 4: Boise, Memphis, SMU and USF have been given a wink from the B12 on expansion? Find it odd that all are spending $100M+ on stadium/facility upgrades at the same time. That's a lot of dough, without any confirmation that you're next in line.

Wonder where we are ? I wonder if this time we really are #2 on everybody's list .

We missed the 1st shake up for the Big Least ---but made the 2nd----then we all know what happened after we were added

UAB may not excite you...but they have been a very decent football program the last few years.
They've done it with a smaller budget than Memphis. Their tv revenues have been smaller...and they weren't in as good of time slots as Memphis and other AAC schools have been/
They even had a football season cancelled because of in-state big brother Alabama.
Depite that...the coach stayed...recruited like the devil, and kept that school relevant in Conference CUSA.
With added exposure...and tv money...that school can transform itself like Memphis did when we left CUSA for the AAC.
Another school...UTSA has been pretty good as of late,
Its still too early to say whether they can continue that streak or not..but again with added tv revenue and a higher profile than much of the other G5 schools get...they can also invest in their program.
Get off your high horse and see that it could have been much worse for our conference in terms of membership.
I DO think they laid a huge egg by adding Rice. For football and basketball, they make absolutely no sense.
Baseball is the only sport that seems like it will benefit from that move.

I hope your right but I'm not seeing it. Our casual fans are not going to get excited about coming to UNCC games. We struggle to get interest in games with Tulsa now. I see a bunch of commuter schools with zero tradition and a very small core fan base. I don't see where schools being in a metro area creates a fan base where traditionally there is a in state P5 school that most of the population is tied too. Look how long we have been at this and lets face it, this is still a SEC town. Houston , SMU, Cinci have spent decades building a still fickle core fan base that at its best is around 20 to 30K. What makes you think that UTSA and UNCC are suddenly going to defy history and become players in the college football world?

I agree on the UNCC and Rice additions - I'm not sure they really bring any excitement to the league. I would almost rather we had plucked Marshall and Western Kentucky instead. But even then they are like the rest of us - one bad coaching hire can kill any positive momentum in the program. In the end, it's all a crap shoot.

win another conference title or two...and folks will come.
We saw the bright lights of ESPN Gameday here...and we could again if we can get everything back in order.
This is the year Ryan proves he belongs as a head coach. If he stumbles...I hope leadership is wise enough to pull the plug and get another gem of a coach.

Boise and Memphis if they expand soon.

If not, someone will catch up or surpass us.

The uncomfortable thing to me is the vast space between Cincy, West Virginia and UCF, that is a lot of ground to cover for conference games. SMU doesn't help that. But USF does.

If you look at the schools on a map, with the conference as a spider, we would be the body and the rest of the conference would be the legs.

We need to go on a run like we did the last time our conference got raided.
That was 2005/06, following the Louisville, Cincinnati & USF departure to the Big East, and TCU's departure to the Big 12. Tiger Basketball dominated the years following the departures. Tiger Football, not so much.

RE: Cincinnati, Houston and UCF will leave the summer 2023 - New AAC members join - Mimi - 06-13-2022 05:44 PM

If things seem odd odor us imagine USF

Really new to D1
Get in CUSA
Somehow based on market and “potential” move up to Big East
Have some moments but generally unsuccessful
Stay in the AAC section of the Big East after the basketball schools split
See Louisville, TCU and others leave
Big 12 poaches Houston, UCF (which came after USF) and Cincy
Big 12 does not offer Memphis and SMU, arguably the other schools on par with or arguably better than the three poached schools
AAC adds North Texas, UAB, Rice, FAU, Charlotte and UTSA
Temple, ECU, Memphis, SMU still appealing and leaving in a heartbeat with right offer
USF then where it should be

I have never believed the bigxii would invite Memphis. And so far I have been correct. I still don't believe Memphis will be invited. Especially if only two more are invited. In that case probably USF and Boise are the most likely for geographical reasons. IMO there is only one way for the Tigers to get an invite this go round, and that is if the bigxii invitees four more teams. In that case there is a chance Memphis and SMU would be included.

Have you been sitting on this? You should have informed Laird and company before they announced the LB renovation/Big12 push. It might not be too late.

Conferences care 95% about football. Academics make up the remaining 5%. They do not care at all about basketball. Everyone should understand this by now.
