NIU was second fiddle to the schools kids are going to today as they have been for it's existence. Something many can't admit. It's just the gap has widened.

NIU was only second fiddle to U of I in-state until being lapped by ISU.
Leadership is definitely the issue with creatures like Eddie Williams almost
singlehandedly destroying DeKalb as a college town.

Yes, lapped by ISU. But kids have always been leaving the state for Iowa, IU and even WMU especially for certain curriculum. This state NEVER had a B player to UI. Only thing close were perhaps Business and a few other programs at NIU.

Now you have the likes of Alabama and Nebraska throwing everything at anything to increase their schools academically. When 15+ kids from various hs in Chicagoland are going to Alabama with scholarships says alot for where those schools stand, or stood.

From US News:

University of Alabama's ranking in the 2022 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities, #148. Its in-state tuition and fees are $11,620; out-of-state tuition and fees are $31,090.
Agreed. My daughter got instate tuition at Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, South Carolina and basically $0 tuition at Alabama, and the instate tuition of all these schools is $6k a year lower than Illinois schools. It was a no brainer to decide where to go. So much so that we decided to move out of Illinois altogether. My leadership comments on Illinois extend not only NIU, but to Illinois state government and agencies as well. They allow Illinois universities to have bloated bureaucracy, too many redundant programs and location, millions of dollars on useless locations like Governors State, Chicago State and University of Springfield with no real student populations. I just disagree on NIU not being the U of I alternative. It was the case in 1980 to 1990 during the high levels of HS graduates in Illinois. And NIU was way ahead of ISU in programs and student population at the peak, and close to being a top 100 public university (peaked out in the high 120 ranger) To see NIU fall so far is just disheartening.

+1000. They really need to close 1 or 2 schools in the next couple years. Spread whatever is left over to the other public universities

NIU was the alternative to UI. But it still was not in the category of other B10 schools at the time. Not sur about WMU, but I know a few who went there. The only reason I and many others did not go was out of state cost. And back then residency was an issue, hard to prove. Unless I guess you were a city worker with a second residence in MI.

And while the state bears some responsibility, the mass exodus and parental influence on top of attractive more easily accessible locations all over the county are what they are, beyond control. When cost of living is less, weather the attraction for the white collar person is there as well as those non-union. Especially pre-covid.But many of those locations were paying less. Now NC, Texas are hotbeds....and salaries , cost of living are reflecting it. I heard Apple and others with hq is Austin are literally building communities. And if the trend of work from home continues, as stated, smaller and smaller metros with less cost of living will benefit.

Point granted, but no way in hell NIU should be doing this poorly compared to peers UNI, Indiana State, Illinois State, most of the Michigan and Ohio MAC etc. No excuse and the result of poor leadership up and down the line.

Agreed, we should be holding steady with that lot at the very least.

Hoping we up attendance soon.

So glad Facebook built (and already expanding) in Dekalb. I guess its not uncommon for another major tech/data player to follow suit once one lands in a township like Dekalb, hoping Google or the like takes notice.

Chicago State will never close. With under 500 freshman and around 1600
total enrollment, it is a cash cow for the south side politicians. Most high schools in the suburbs are bigger than Chicago State.

RE: NIL Money at NIU - NIU75 - 05-12-2022 08:45 PM

The NIL Summit is on track to be the largest gathering ever of student-athletes from different universities as more than 100 DI institutions have registered delegates to attend the inaugural event from June 13-15 at the Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

Universities interested in nominating additional student-athletes and administrators must do so by tomorrow, May 13, in order to ensure access to the Summit's room block at the Omni Atlanta.

Joining the student-athletes will be more than 25 global brand partners, including: Meta, Invesco, Wasserman, WWE, Inflcr, Under Armour and Campus Legends.

The event will kick-start with the first ever NIL Awards on the evening of Monday, June 13 and will be live streamed via Twitter. The following two days will feature more than 16 panel and keynote conversations from more than 50 speakers, including some of the most influential executives and talent from sports and entertainment.

I wonder if NIU have registered delegates.

I'm not going to get into whether players deserve this or not, good or bad but pretty sure this wasn't the vision most schools saw when this started.
Even NCAA perhaps The schools can't legally pay players directly but their boosters can donate/own entities hat directly "sponsor" them. And the schools can enter "partnerships" with entities with direct paths to athletes and vice versa.

Basically a paid internship if you can get it, perhaps find an outlet to sell your old shoes, autograph or dirty socks.

Good for them I guess.

Lot's of questions, few answers.

Anyway, again, +.

None of the NIU golfers, as with many college golfers I'm sure, have many social media followers to speak of. The payment would reflect that, and we could put a small promo spend behind the postings. A small marketing bump, a small NIL needle mover for the program, quick win/win that the school certainly needs more of.

Like I said, sounds like the Illinois law makes things a bit messy or unclear, and that NIU leadership is doing a worse job than some other Illinois schools at navigating the issue. Frazier needs to create a NIL communication/booking pipeline, and then do a blanket email to all corp.-related alumni as a NIL explainer and invitation.

I do believe that NIL.was a downstream by-product of the lawsuit of the Northwestern players v NCAA. I do believe it was a labor law issue. Which brings me to my main point of why isn't STF asking a couple of Professors that teach Labor Law at NIU Law School what the best course of action to open NIL to student athletes.
I participated in that lawsuit! Seems like a long time ago. I had a very minor role-- but it was interesting!

EDIT: The case I was referring to was Darnell Autry. Different case. Seems like a long time ago!

I'm 100% certain the athletic department has legal representation that not only litigates on their behalf if something were to arise but also to give legal council on any questions they may have.

In other words, there's literally zero reasons to go talk to some professor in the college of law about anything.

BR, I was responding to the comment that Illinois law makes things unclear to proceed on NIL. The point that I was trying to make was that NIU AD has enough resources(Lawyers on retainer, unless that got slashed from the budget or a NIU LAW Department) that being unsure of Illinois Law should not be an excuse.

This is the beginning of the end of college football as we previously knew it. I know their already was a huge gap between the P5 teams and The Group of Fives but NIL and the new transfers rules are the end of us. Enjoy these next couple years of Huskie Football. Unfortunately, the divide in FBS football just got A LOT bigger with NIL. It's a matter of time before the Big Dogs and the little dogs are separated.

What a waste of money. Paying someone that kind of money who hasn't proved anything in college yet.
