Giving 8 million dollars to an 18-year-old these days all at once through inheritance is like letting an alcoholic live in a liquor store, too…

The entire purpose of a trust fund is not giving an 18-year-old 8 million dollars…

I’m glad you are really high on the economic justice angle, but have you considered that just giving people money might make their problems worse? In such cases, your advocacy for justice is in service only to ideological dreams rather than actually bettering a person’s life.

I’m putting my money where my mouth is and not renewing season tickets; I’ll sit in the cheap seats (and still have better attendance than most season tickets holders).

This is on the NCAA for putting all their eggs in the "This is honestly amateur student athletics!" basket and creating a wild wild west when the judges called them on their bull****. They're even doubling down on it.

Exactly. If they had accepted the ruling in the first suit filed they wouldn't have had the wild west forced upon them with this most recent ruling (from the SCOTUS no less).

See the thing is they aren't "just giving people money". They're giving them money in exchange for a marketable skill. You know, the free market and all that jazz.

Also, "I'm going to withhold some money from the program that had nothing to do with the decision I'm mad about but still going to go to the games" seems like a weird way to go about it but OK

Getting mad at the wrong people is the American way.

I think too much money is a terrible problem for college football, so I’m going to shovel less money into it.

If you think money is the problem but you keep buying tickets and merchandise or even donate, then that doesn’t make sense.

RE: “NIL” - Good Bad or Ugly - wmubroncopilot - 05-07-2022 11:23 AM

Too much money is not remotely the WMU program's problem. It's not like that money is really recirculating into the wider college football world. And no ticket money is going towards NIL anyway.

God lives in the details. It’s not easy. You need to get hooked up with the big boats to ignite the magic, then get the fans hooked up with the magic. You got to get the turbine spinning, spray some fuel, and touch that baby off. I think it is possible to do that in the Zoo, but it will take some special people willing to take on a challenge.

With the introduction of legal "pay for play", I was wondering how long before NCAA players "unionize" and push for a collective bargaining agreement?

Not all athletes can benefit directly from the NIL, but with out these, lets call them "no names", the few would not be able to benefit from NLI's. Thoughts?

Northwestern players tried to Unionize and were unable to as they were not Employees.
The Northwestern court case & an additional lawsuit over player likeness in NCAA video game, I believe were the start of what became the NIL of today.

Some college athletes are employees, federal agency says—here’s what that means

Can't find anything on the status of the bill that was introduced into the senate, but here is the bills contents for those who might be interested:

Indeed true. The video game suit was also the one where the NCAA, with Emert on the stand, embarrassingly tried to defend their hard line on amateurism with the Judge openly calling him on his bull**** (the judge was allowed to question witnesses due to the type of case it was). That should have been their wake-up call, but instead they buried their heads in the sand and pretended all was well. The fact that Emert wasn't fired for that fiasco shows what a joke the NCAA had become.

The Honey Boo Booization of sports is nearly complete. Better start getting my 3rd and 4th graders some of that Adidas money!

"But some kids make money doing other creative things, like playing games on Twitch, why can't athletes?" Yes, and how is that working out for them? Rare is the child who got celebrity or cash who hasn't shipwrecked their life.

RE: “NIL” - Good Bad or Ugly - wmubroncopilot - 05-10-2022 07:49 PM

It's worth noting that the artificial part of this was restricting peoples' ability to make money in the first place. The NCAA came up with the arbitrary standard and definition of amateurism. It's one thing to not pay players; quite something else to tell them they aren't allowed to make money off their own image outside of the universities' purview.

I think in a traditional sense, that makes sense. Universities used to operate in loco parentis for their students. Ironically as we see 20-year-olds become less mature and more dependent on parents we’ve forced universities to drop their in loco parentis standard. Now students are just consumers of classes.

NIL is SUPPOSED to be Quid Pro Quo.
