Spring Game and New Turf - GreenBison - 04-26-2022 11:29 AM

I thought the reason for having the Spring Game in the IPF is because we were getting new turf? They had activities on the field for kids and fans that sat in the stadium. What did I miss? LOL

Turf is unsafe for play…

Oh ok, that makes sense. I was under the impression that the turf was going to be replaced or the start of replacing was to take place while the Spring Game was going on.

Since they still haven't figured out a specific design, I would say they are still a month or two away from the actual replacement arrives and is done.

Does anyone know what different "kinds" of turf is available to get? I haven't been impressed with the turf we have now. It always looked grimy and those rubber pellets are all over the place. Does other turf require those rubber pellets?

The AstroTurf website shows a few different options. I remember someone mentioning we use the "Rhino" style of AstroTurf which I assume is their cheaper model. I hope we don't cheap out on this turf so it looks good for more than just a couple seasons. Just going by their showcase, we seem to be the only FBS College that uses that type of turf on their actual field. The better types of turfs show UNC and Oklahoma State among others.

You can find the different styles of turf on the ribbon at the top of the page.

Looks like we use the LigaTurf Series for our Soccer Field.

Pretty sure the rubber pellet crap won't be back. They did some cancer studies and it's not good for the players to breathe that in when they fall to the turf and it bounces up. It was phased out as best as I can recall but was right after we put it in, so we've enjoyed cancer ball for a decade.

Liga turf is designed specifically for soccer. If you ever look at a soccer pitch (natural grass), the wear is relatively even but more wear to the outer 15-20% of the field on either side.

If you look at a football field..nearly ANY rural HS football field, the middle of the field is dirt/mud by October. THAT is the difference. I suspect the pellets will be replaced with sand as it used to be. The softer the field, the poorer for the knees and ankles. That is why you never see tartan basketball floors anymore.

As far as the Joan Turf...As turf goes, the less color used, the better the turf will sustain its look. The turf isnt painted, it is dyed and sewn in, so it isnt a matter of paining it to touch it up.

Any ETA for the new turf? I thought it was supposed to be installed around the time of the Green and White game? Then I heard summer.
Do any locals have insight?

Not gonna lie, I hope they pushed back the new turf because they are taking fan ideas into account and making the best design possible.

I heard Spears say that he was making changes to the turf design based on the feedback they got from the renderings that was posted out online. I am thinking they will go with the black endzones, but based off the fan feedback, change the coloring of the lettering in the endzones from white to green.

The decision to change it due to fan feedback would be incredible and I am all for it. I'm not sure the green on black would pop as well as the white on black. Remember that the letters are still outlined in Kelly Green. I hope that they are considering the alternating turf every 5 yards and maybe something more for the 75, but If they go with the black endzones that they showed in twitter, I'll honestly be happy with it.

No reason for an outline when the letters have enough contrast to separate themselves from the background. The outline will make the edges of the lettering look soft. But design by committee rarely works from my experience LOL. Too many people get caught up in the concept then the design takes a back seat to the concept. They design for up close viewing and forget about designing for viewing from the stands or from TV. Seen it 100 times in my career. Classic example was the black fade in the jersey numbers several years ago. Also you see it a lot on billboards.

I suggested the green letting with white outline on black turf. It really pops. Someone did a mock up…

I just saw the reply on that page. I always thought the endzones were different from the rest of the field. It really tricks my eyes every time. I see it as a shade lighter in the endzones and on the M.
