Consolidate the banners! - inductchuck16 - 03-18-2022 02:55 PM

For the men’s team not having been to the Big Dance in 42 years, and the women’s team only appearing twice this millennium, there are far too many banners inside of Savage Arena. Other legit fan bases who come to UT (e.g. Dayton), they make fun of us for all the pointless banners.

Consolidate them for a cleaner and much better look! It’s well past due for that change.

This is one of my main complaints about Savage. My out-of-town family finds the number of crappy banners absolutely hilarious for a school that's played only a handful of meaningful post-season games in decades.

I counted over 50 banners, between men and women, last night. It would be even worse if they weren't doing some consolidation already. Toledo is a few more sub-par years away from having banners you can reach out and touch in the corner by section 104.

Maybe they should take them all down and tell the teams they will have to earn any banners themselves and not have 42 year old or older banners as a reminder of what this program was before most in attendance started going to UT games. CO-MAC West banners in basketball or Football are meaningless. NCAA or NIT game win banners or championships should be raised, not league participation banners. Most of the fans and students don't care what happened in the 70's or 80's, only relevant to 55 year old and above fans.

I agree. And get rid of the MAC West banners!

Have 1 banner each for MAC Reg Season Champs, MAC Tournament Champs (LOL), NIT, and then individual banners for NCAA appearances.

Using this image of Savage Arena from Google Maps (Link), I put together a mock up of how I think the banners should be - I'm obviously not a graphic artist, so they would obviously need some extra graphics and stuff added.

It's hard to tell what the banners are on the opposite end of the photo, so I tried to remember what they said.

just an FYI, there was no MAC tournament in 1978-79.

I was just going by this page that listed a "Conference Tournament" with just UT vs. CMU.

We tied CMU for the regular season championship (no divisions then), beat them in a one-game playoff in Ann Arbor, beat Iowa the next week in the first round of the NCAA, then lost to Notre Dame (with 7 future NBA players on their roster) in the Sweet 16. There hasn’t be as exciting a time in Rocket basketball since.

I could see a separate banner for the second and fourth in the NIT at a time when many considered it an equal to the NCAA.

Very nice!! This is exactly what I had in mind. Pretty simple stuff for a vastly improved look. Hopefully the new AD comes in with some big ideas, maybe we can somehow bring this to his attention.

Dick Miller punctuated Rocket win with a huge dunk in the final seconds and I got in a fight with a CMU fan who kept warning me he was one of Sugar Ray Leonard’s sparring partner. He wasn’t and he got arrested. All in all an entertaining evening.

I'd consolidate the NCAA Appearances onto one banner as well, with only benchmark appearances (S16, E8, F4, etc.) getting their own separate banner...that's how just about every other school does it nowadays.
